"was fired by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis without pay via the telephone, according to team sources".

Fu** that bastard Davis. Pay the man his money!

No I suspect he'll come up with some reason why Hackett is the next best thing since ice cream cake.

I'm thinking Kiffin will go back to coaching in the college ranks...I think Al Davis ruined him.

Although, I'd like to see him on the Jets coaching staff next season...maybe coaching the Wideouts....but that may be a reach.

Point blank- Al Davis is a classless idiot. I will give Lane Kiffin the benefit of the doubt here because the Raiders have improved this season. They just cannot find a way to finish games. But if the walking corpse that is Davis would have embraced the guy instead of thinking of different ways to run Kiffin out then things may have been a bit better in the city of Oakland. Lane deserves a job in the NFL to show what he's got. He had to work with what he had in front of him, which has not been much these last couple of years. I only hope that his credentials have not been ruined by Davis and he can find work in the NFL if he chooses. If not, I wish him all the luck in the NCAA because he seems like a genuine person that does not deserve to be shit on.

No. He has a contract... but somehow he was able to do the same to Shannahan.

Sure--but of course, the guy fired can sue.

Davis's strategy is to reduce his liability by making Kiffin sue and dragging it on for a while and thereby forcing Kiffin to agree to a settlement that is less than he is owed.

If you want to learn more about this strategy, see West Virginia University and its trouble with its last football coach Rodriguez.

Also, Davis is mentally ill so his moves may not be as rational as they seem. He could be hoping he'll die before having to pay Kiffin so that he doesn't live to see "defeat against this foe" or something.

The offensive line coach is the leading candidate? The coach of the worst unit, on an already bad team, is the best Davis can find in the entire coaching staff? Or did he just kiss Davis' ass the best?

What happened to Shanahan was a long time ago.

Kiffin is going to get most of his money out of the old guy. I hope Kiffin the best in the future and hopefully he's able to come back to the NFL -- let this be yet another lesson to future HC applicants to avoid the career ending destination known as Oakland.

Did I miss something? At what point in the last decade has Davis seemed anything remotely resembling rational?

you can try, but the coaches have a union now too. it will go to an arbitrator, who unless Al Davis can actually prove insubordination that would merit voiding the contract, he will be forced to pay. if he doesn't pay, the league could then take action against the Raiders, not to mention Kiffin would have the recourse to go through the courts to get his money. in the end, Al Davis can't win, but he can certainly try.

I heard from a very reliable source that Shanahan has still yet to collect his dues from those year in that Black Hole.

I agree, he is a young coach, who will only get better after this experience.

Kiffin should go back to College coaching... he can dominate at that level.
