Defence!! yes our front 7 has played awsome. we are top 5 in sack and stopping the run... but passing is killing us.. we are giving up to many yards in the air.. our run game doesnt look any better then it did last year even with the new line. even though its only week 4... i thought id see more..thomas jones has to step up.
I will say some of it is garbage time yards... like its always been when this team is winning.. but the D's adjustments need to get better. And perhaps the punting situation - field position is soooo important and underrated. Running game is eh, but with the week off I think the Line jells a little more and chemistry gets stronger, which is very dangerous. TJ is playing like Chicago TJ. Health is the one thing I want to see return before the Cincy game. Jenkins and Favre being 100%. As well as everyone else.
Agreed. I think the BYE will help with the defense and I think Chatman becomes a HUGE part of this team's success after a few weeks back after suspension. I can see him having more carries than Jones. Jones just looks like a step slow
They need to work on the onside kick coverage... teams are going to try to exploit that now that it has been shown as a weakness. Chatman will likely never see the field.
3rd down Defense looked atrocious in the SD game. Pass Defense looked awful in the 2nd half yesterday. What's the common theme?? No Kris Jenkins on the field = major suck.
Wholeheartedly disagree about Chatman. He is the bruiser this O is missing. I expect to see him on goalline and 3rd and short situations. If he does well with those, I expect to see even more of him.
He will be lucky to see the field more than 10 plays at any given time. Jones is running pretty well, and Leon is a threat. Chatman is not going to solve anything at this point. He is an insurance policy, nothing more.
Right, because we're just so set running between the tackles. The CS played Chatman all day long in the final preseason game and are bringing him back after his suspension. I think he's going to be the key back in redzone situations. I totally disagree with you. I think the bye week they will be installing him for short yardage and goal line. Another thing they need to work on is getting Poteat into the defensive sets and Coleman out of them.
That is something that Jones can do fine. If you go back to the 3 straight runs, not getting in wasn't Jones fault, it was the o-lines. Chatman won't fix that.
Jones is lucky to get 2 -3 yards between the tackles against bad run defenses. Neither Jones nor Leon punishes LBs and that's what Chatman brings to the team.
I would argue that the run blocking hasn't been spectacular. The o-line has been much better in pass blocking than run blocking. When Jones gets a hole he has hit it hard.
I like what Jones has been doing, but he's not a goal line back. Chatman will bring something to the table that we don't currently have in the backfield.
Better on Defense; more consistent passing pressure; better against the pass. Better at establishing the run offensively; I don't care how we do it, but we need to still get better. BTW, anyone hear any rumor on when/if Clowney may return???????
Cards scored their points on a prevent defense. Whether or not that was the right call is debatable -- but still -- the "base" defense did a nice job. I thought that our running game was still weak. I remember seeing a clip where Holmgren tells Brett on the side lines after a bad INT -- like yesterdays, something like, "Im begging you, can you stop throwing passes like that."
I hope he does, but I'm just in the position that I would have to see it to believe it. Watching the running game, I don't see the line getting a lot of push against opposing front 7s, and the backs keep getting dropped because of it. Not to mention they keep running stretch plays that go nowhere. Everytime they DO open a hole though, the backs have been through it like they have a rocket in their ass. The Jets need to rely on the pass to open the running game, since the opposite isn't going to happen. I just don't think Chatman is going to improve that in any way. I think that is on the o-line.
Totally disagree there too, Jones hits the hole with about as much authority as a church mouse. The guy stutter steps before the LOS too many times and goes down too quickly on first contact.
It's been the same story with Leon. When there isn't a hole to run through, then they are going nowhere. The few times yesterday Jones had a hole (especially on one run behind Faneca) he blew through it and picked up big yardage. But if you watch the push our oline gets vs the push olines get vs our front 7 (especially when Jenkins isn't in there) there seems to be a considerable difference. On all of the goalline situations yesterday, the Cardinals were able to practically jog into the endzone. You never see that kind of ease with the Jets running game. The Jets did a good job in general against Arizona's running game but that has a lot to do with the turnovers, which killed any form of momentum Arizona never had.
I thought TJ looked very slow to the line on short yardage situations and that's no good on the goaline. That 4th down pick-up on the left side was nice but it wasn't quick. If Chatman can hit the line faster and hold onto the ball, it would be good. Also, Chatman's legs never seem to stop--he'd be good for short-yardage and goaline.
