GANG GREEN LOOKS TO RATTLE WARNER By MARK CANNIZZARO September 28, 2008 It's not often that, on Sept. 28 in the NFL season, the word must is associated with a game. But the JetsNew York Jets must win today's game against the Cardinals at Giants Stadium if they're going to develop into the team they think they're going to be. The last thing the Jets want to do is lose a third consecutive game (second consecutive at home) and stagger into their bye next week at 1-3. So there's pressure on the 1-2 Jets, who are coming off a sloppy 48-29 point loss to the Chargers Monday night, and need to assert themselves at home against the 2-1 Cardinals, who are playing their second consecutive East Coast game today after a loss in Washington last week. "It is important," Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins said. "We definitely need to bounce back. We definitely need to make a statement - not only for everyone else, but for ourselves - and show that we're capable of winning a big game." Here's how The Post sees the big game breaking down for the Jets: BEST BATTLE Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins vs. Cardinals center Lyle Sendlein, and guards Reggie Wells and Deuce Lutui. Jenkins is proving to be perhaps the Jets' most important defensive player. His presence in the middle makes it difficult for teams to run the ball on the Jets. And, Cardinals' quarterback Kurt Warner hates pressure up the middle, and Jenkins is a terrific penetrating force. CATCH AS CATCH CAN If the Jets are going to beat the Cardinals they're going to have to contain their prolific tandem of wide receivers - Larry Fitzgerald (17-247, 4 TDs) and Anquan Boldin (16-293, 2 TDs), who have combined for 33 catches and six touchdowns in three games. The burden will fall mainly on Jets cornerbacks Darrelle RevisDarrelle Revis and Dwight Lowery, a rookie who had a tough game against the Chargers Monday night. Fitzgerald is tied for the NFL lead in receptions over 20 yards with five. WARNER WARNING The scouting report on Warner always has been about him not wanting to get hit. Who does? But Warner has shown a propensity to hold on to the ball a bit too long and pay for it. Look for the Jets to come after him and look for former Cards linebacker Calvin Pace to get his first sack against his former teammate. DON'T FORGET ME Lost in the big numbers that Warner and his wide receiver tandem have put up is Cardinals' RB Edgerrin James, who has 248 rushing yards and a 4-yard average. If the Cards are able to run the ball with James, it could be a long day for the Jets' defense. RETURN THE FAVOR Jets returner Leon WashingtonLeon Washington , who's third in the NFL with a 33.1-yard kickoff return average and eighth in punt returns at 12.8 yards, faces a stiff challenge today. The Cardinals allow an average of only 18.1 yards per kickoff return and their punter Dirk Johnson has allowed just one punt return for six yards. TURNOVERS The Cardinals are tied for fourth in the league with a plus-3 in turnover ratio, and the Jets are ranked 31st with a minus-4. The Jets have turned the ball over a league-high six times. WHAT'S THE CHANSI? Jets wide receiver Chansi Stuckey is the first player since 2002 to catch a touchdown pass in his first three NFL games. His three touchdowns are more than Jerricho Cotchery (1) and Laveranues Coles (1) combined. NUMBER TO KNOW 15.7. That's the average number of points per game the Cardinals' defense has allowed. JETS FACT They're ranked second lead the league in average starting drive position (33.6 yard line). FOE FACT They're ranked 29th with an average starting drive position (22.3 yard line). mark.cannizzaro@nypost.com CANNIZZARO'S CALL The Jets' defense will get into Warner's face and harass him, forcing a turnover or two. They will get RB Thomas Jones into a rhythm against the Cardinals and settle down the Jets offense. JETS 23, CARDINALS 16 mark.cannizzaro@nypost.com __________________
Canny is really reaching with this article IMHO. We could not rattle a high school QB named Cassel so how are we going to rattle a vet like Warner with zippo pass rush & below average DEs?
the answer is better schemes and tight coverage in our secondary. Jenkins will apply pressure up the gut. That is what always unerves WARNER. Expect Gholston to start to begin to apply pressure as a result of JENKINS flushing WARNER out of the pocket. Pace will play a big role today too. SD has a great OFFENSE. Not many teams can pass rush RIVERS. NE also has a great OL. The Jets were facing a QB that was an unknown and ERIC was genuinely outcoached. Unlike Sporano. The DOLPHINS saw the way to beat NE was by trickery. They did it and won. We beat the DOLPHINS and had several sacks. Arizona does not have as great of an OL as either NE or SD. We will be able to apply pressure on WARNER and win this game!
From what I've seen Warner has been very good at getting rid of the ball quickly when blitzed this season. We're going to need to get pressure with 4 guys a lot of the time. Thankfully we have Jenkins back and that will help a lot. This game scares the hell out of me.
We sit back and rush 3 guys? Warner will take our lunch money and take his wife out to dinner with it.. Mangini and his "staff" had better come up with a NFL calibre game plan or they certainly will be squarely in the bullseye over the next two weeks. I didn't know Mangini has lost 14 of his las 19 games...
Sorry KYJ I dont buy it. Miami totally collapse the Pats DLine & OTH we did nothing. Either we do not have the personnel or we do not have a CS that knows how to game plan. My son HO of VG is he will be total bust & since he is done zero up to down why would you think he would contribute anything in this game. Jenkins is only as good as his back allows him to be. I'm sure you know people who have had back problems & they never disappear. I think there is far to much pie in sky in your post & not enough substance. Maybe because we lack the substance. Hope I am wrong but in the long view it really does not matter since we are not on the same level much the same planet as the NYGs, The Eagles, The Boys & what I have seen up to now TN which all equals up to another year of not winning the SB
& what was the results compared to what Miami did the following week to Cassel? BTW how do you think we would do at this stage of the season vs TN, NYGs, Boys or the Eagles?
NE's starting field position was much better against us than Miami. We'd get killed by any of those teams right now. Luckily we have a lot of time to grow before we play TN.
as i stated, better schemes are necessary and tighter covergae. IMO Gholston will come on a bit stronger then in past games. It is far too easy to label a guy a bust after a position change and so little experience. Every game will start to get better from here on in. Last year at this time the giaints were 1 and 2. We are NOT devoid of a pass rush. I will say again: against SD we had none at all. Of course we played a weak scheme without much aggressiveness. It seems MANGREENI and SUTTON have forgotten how to play aggressive defense. I refuse to go along with any dire predictions. This team can win today. We need better schemes and coaching decisions. Losing 14 of his last 19 games does not endear MANGREENI to me.
Will there ever be a year where we put together 16 consecutive, solid games???? Every year its another slow start..
LOL at you arguing logically with that mental midget. Cassel put up 19 points with an average field position on the Jets 40. Yeah A Joe Montana clone there. If the Jets were not so fucking bad on special teams that game, Cassel would have put up what? A monster 10-12 points? Yeah way to distort a negative agenda!
You should put a date to that quote by Patriots Nation NY. I feel like it would compliment the awesome within that sentence.
Sometimes they start really good and then suck at the end. 1986- started 10-1, finished 10-6 2000- started 4-0 and 6-1, finished 9-7
I don't feel the Jets should get blitz-happy today. I don't think it will work. The pressure has to come from Pace and Thomas. I don't want to see Barton and Rhodes blitzing. Blitzing is unnecessary, limiting, and a complication for defenders. The Jets need to apply pressure from the regular pass rushers. There's no need to get fancy today.
How come you are notoriously QUIET? The Jets won! Did you see the first half? They did as I suggested. The second halfd was terrible on DEFENSE. But FAVRE was magnificent!
