TF am I looking for excuses for? You guys need EXCUSES to believe the team you're rooting for can be successful? And I'm the fuckin...wow...good call on that Scikotics... 1-2 people...
Chad Pennington's play in Miami and Brett Favre's play in NY says otherwise. The Jets are still running the dink and dunk. The Jets are still sending 3 in to rush the passer. The Jets are still making boneheaded decisions early in the game. But hey, at least we have a rocket arm to lead us through this boneheadedness now!
By ruling out one thing - in this case, the thread title saying "It Ain't the Coaching" - is looking at it in black and white. How about, "It's the Coaching AND the Players Folks" or something along those lines, instead of implying that it's all on the players or that the CS is exonerated when they clearly are playing a major role in the lack of success. I can just see JetsLookingforDWare in a month or two: "C'mon, we're 3-7. The season's far from over. And hey, just remember, it ain't the coaches, folks!"
Come on... It hit Smith in the hands.. It was a Gutsy call.. Yes... But we critize him for not having balls... I don't fault him on it... Do you we want another Herm back in there???
I can criticize a call without wanting the coach replaced. It was not a gutsy call, it was a stupid call that killed all the momentum we had just gained. BTW it hit Wright in the hands, still a bad call.
I think the timing of the call was what was real shitty. I could understand if he did it after the Jets went up 7-0 and they wanted to really put pressure on the Chargers... but doing it when they did felt very random and didn't seem to serve a purpose other than plain trickery.
Week 6, 1998. The Jets face the Rams and get absolutely trounced to fall to 2-3. I remember watching that game and thinking that our season was over. Our brand new QB hadn't started playing well yet, we couldn't run the ball, and that was a Rams team that didn't do much until the following season. I forget, how did the Jets end up in '98? It was an ugly game against a desperate team playing at home with SB aspirations. Cromartie made an outstanding play on the ball to steal momentum away, we couldn't stop them AT ALL on 3rd down early in the game, and we got beat on a few big plays. It happened, we'll move on. This was not like getting pounded by Jacksonville To be perfectly honest, the majority of our defense looked just fine. You're going to complain about just over 100 yards on the ground to LT and Sproles? Chris Chambers had ONE catch. Vincent Jackson had three and ONE big catch. The only sustained drives San Diego had went like this: short gain or stop on 1st down, short gain or stop on 2nd, pick on the nickel on 3rd. Yes, David Barrett had a huge pick six, but the receivers covered by the nickel position converted just about every 3rd and long San Diego had. It was embarrassing on a day when our starting corners really only gave up one big play (Vincent Jackson). There was poor communication between our QB and receivers, which will improve. There was bad play at the nickel spot. There were some truly unfortunate turnovers. That was the difference.
The problems with the Jets have nothing to do with the defense. The only time the entire game the Jets put the defense in a position to succeed, was when the defense did it itself with the pick six. That's pathetic.
Yes. Really. Because I don't see you placing ANY blame on the coaches. The most ridiculous statement was the one about being unable to make adjustments due to the fact it was a road game in San Diego. Like, wtf?
It's the coaching. The offense was moving the ball well after we were down by 24 in the spread formation. Favre is known for quick outs and slants, that's the real advantage of having a strong arm. Sure you take some shots down field when you can, but you make your living off of really well timed short stuff that can turn into bigger gainers, and forces the defense to try and play really tight. A good slant is still pretty much unstoppable though, and that's why Favre is an all time top 10 QB, he's one of the best ever at throwing the slant, if not the best. Now you can say that it was garbage time. I don't think so, either does Favre or Rivers, who have said the Chargers kept bringing it and never let up. Favre also in his post game presser specifically mentioned that set, and how he thought we needed to be in it more often. If the reason that set wasn't used before is because Favre didn't know the plays, it makes no sense that he somehow figured it out when down by 24, and could execute it. We are going to lose to the Cardinals next week most likely, especially if Jenkins is out but even if he is in. Warner is playing too well right now, and Fitz and Boldin present matchup nightmares to any team in the league. But that's okay, as long as we finally start playing to win on offense. We have a bye week, and the schedule gets pretty easy afterwards. I can live with 1-3 as long as I see progress. Steve Young says Week 10 until Favre plays really well. We need to hold the fort until then. We want to be maybe 5-4 by then, and then we can really get on a roll after that. It's doable. Next week's loss is going to really suck, but it won't kill us. We can still finish 11-5 and that should win the division.
that's not even close to semantics. you said something completely different. a semantical argument is one in which you say the same thing just say it differently.
The problems as I see them: 1) We cannot afford an injury on either line - Jenkins went down and we couldn't stop the run. Pouha was consistently being blown off of the ball at least 5-7 yards in the defensive backfield. He can't anchor the d-line if Jenkins is down for good. O-line depth has been touched enough so I won't go into it. 2) We're seriously mismanaging two players on either side of the ball - First, Leon. I know I'm flogging what has to be one very mutilated corpse of a horse by now but WTF is it with our coaches and their lack of will to use a HB in the flex? Is Marshall Faulk paying any coach with this option not to in hopes of preserving his legacy as the best receiving HB in the history of the game? Give the guy the ball in space already. We've seen what makes him a good KR and its his ability to change direction and make people miss. Why won't they try this out on offense? If Mangini is comming from the "Belichick School of Football" did he skip the class on Kevin Faulk?(Jeff, if you're reading this, I'm sorry for stealing your line). I haven't seen one honest attempt to integrate the screen into the offense. On the other side of the ball, there's Gholston. I know he's still learning a new position and he's struggling there. However, I don't see how the CS can be so narrow-minded in using him. The guy has one move, bull rush. The problem that I see is that he somehow only manages to get matched up with an OT. Let him rush from the outside and try to match him up with a HB. There aren't too many HB's that can stand up to a bull rushing DE/OLB and win...in fact the only one that comes to mind happens to be the other New York team and the only reason I can see it working is because he's bigger than Gholston. Or, if he just can't be trusted as an OLB then why not set up a stunt or a delayed blitz behind him? Even if he can't beat the OT with his bull rush he still has been consistently pushing them into the backfield between 3-5 yards. I can't think of a better oppurtunity to create sacks with him than to send a linebacker, nickleback, or saftey right up his ass. 3) The playcalling. Yet another issue that has been beaten to death but I just have to get my opinion in on this one. For the sake of brevity, I'll stick to this game. When you're down by that much you have to get away from the run. Once we hit the spread and started throwing slants we were moving the ball consistently. Sadly, that wasn't until the fourth quarter. It's Brett f*cking Favre! He loves throwing to slant routes almost as much as he loved pain-killers. Where was that in the first quarter? Secondly, not that it mattered at that point but, the second two point conversion attempt was just horrible playcalling. We start at the 1 and 1/2, Shotgun spread, empty backfield: personal foul, move the ball 1/2 the distance to the goal. Second attempt, Shotgun spread, empty backfield: personal foul on San Diego, move the ball 1/2 distance to the goal. Third attempt, Shotgun spread, empty backfield: offsides on San Diego, move the ball 1/2 the distance to the goal. Fourth attempt, SHOTGUN SPREAD, EMPTY BACKFIELD? The ball is nine inches away from the goal line! Here, you run the damn ball!!! Or, you just have Favre call "hike" and then reach, it probably would have worked! That nowhere near covers all of the issues surrounding this team but I think it's a good start.
I've been saying for a while now that I ain't gonna be worried about nothin' until after the bye week. Neither should anyone else, IMHO.
How many teams would walk off their best D-linemen going down in the first half? Seriously...think. Maybe they did change the game plan, but being that they can't play the fuckin game and losing Kris Jenkins *really* hurts...the change didn't work all that well? We were aggressive all game, and Rivers killed us for it. Besides for the Jackson pass, when did they beat us deep? We got outplayed. The coaching is probably an issue...but not to the level it's been on this board the past two weeks...I'd ignore but its every thread.
I don't understand how he can look comfortable when he's constantly running backwards and throwing off of his back foot instead of stepping up into the pocket, and don't give me that "gunnslinger mentalitly" bullshit. He doesn't get a pass for "It's Brett Favre being Brett Favre," it's terrible mechanics and not giving a crap about your job, or it's him not trusting the o-line to protect him which doesn't exactly sound like being comfortable.
So Vernon Gholston finally got a tackle, eh? Who would have thought that? Mangini is a failure at life, no surprise there. What was he thinking about when he decided to correct all of those mistakes that were made throughout the NE game? Crazy. Get rid of that Schotty guy... It is all his fault that he has to draw up a bland offense because of a QB that barely understands this system. Why take the proper steps to develop a FOH QB into this offense when you could just go ahead with a very creative gameplan that that same FOH QB would never understand. He has a laser-rocket arm, so all would be fine, what could possibly go wrong?
I have to admit that when I watched the game I was thinking the same thing. It looks like Favre was throwing off his back foot a lot. Not every time of course, but there were numerous plays where he didn't seem to by stepping into the throw. I don't know if he's afraid of getting hit or not. Also, it seemed that on a couple of plays that Favre didn't take advantage of sliding one way or another to avoid the rush.
Exactly, at times it's like the pocket pressence isn't there. He needs to trust his o-line more or get rid of it sooner. He's used to a west coast system so why do we have so many routes going downfield on every play. It isn't Madden, dial up some high percentage routes and let Cotch and Coles suck the DBs in before attempting to go downfield.
