Mike Nugent isn't not good if that makes sense...but exaggeration and hyperbole can do that to guys... Manning had some good seasons too... Plus, they've produced Vrabel and Smith at DE...
That's fair, I'm 100% sure you know better than I do. I didn't see much of him at all in college and am speaking strictly in terms of his credentials as to why he was drafted where he was. Hopefully he develops into a good pro. I don't think it's fair at all to judge him as a pro at this point in his career.
I don't know about that first sentence there. I never expected much this season. If he ever puts it all together, I thought it wouldn't happen till 2009 at the earliest. My thing is that I don't hold out much hope. I don't like pass rushers who don't show much emotion. Gholston is quiet. He's not a fiery guy. To me, the two most important types of players are QBs and pass rushers (whether an end of a 3-4 OLB). There are a couple traits I like to see in such players. QB- football intelligence pass rushers- meanness, aggression, passion Gholston has not shown that, not yet at least. In college, I thought he was very stiff. His lateral movement is not great and this is partly why he has not been good in coverage.
Maybe its just that im pulling hard for the guy, but like many of you i dvr and rewatch all the games and i dont see how he is as bad as some would suggest. Yeah he seems to be apprehensive at times and does totally rely on the bullrush when he rushes. But next to jenkins he has the best burst on the line imo. He is giving up a shitload of weight yet he does collapse the pocket and has been close to getting a sack. He needs refinement but he is to gifted to end up average let alone be a bust. Vernon gets his first sack this week.
I so tired of people comparing our draft picks to the patriots, hell we drafted gholston stop comparing with New England. He looks better in their defense so what. We're two different teams and mangini is not belichick so stop crying.
We just need to start using Gholston as a DE instead of an OLB. I don't think there's any need for him to play OLB right now.
Moments after making that post I knew it was going to be a problem. I considered deleting the whole thing, in fact. I think you can tell when someone is playing with emotion and is excited and fiery as opposed to some lump who doesn't really care and is just going through the motions. Posting at 1:25am didn't help matters. This reminds me of talent arguments. I hate getting into arguments with people regarding whether Team A or Team B is more talented.
I am all for giving him time but the fact is for a #6 pick he should be beyond having difficulties picking up the x's and o's and understanding the system. Right now we can't even put him in to "see what we've got" because he is a liability by not knowing what or where he should be. To me that is the unacceptable part and if you ask Mangini and co if going into the 3rd game of the season if they thought they would not even be able to test out Gholston when guys like Pace or B Thomas need a breather he would say hell no. But thats our situation. He needs to step it up and earn his way onto the field. The only player position that has an excuse to never be on the field after being picked in the top 6 picks is a QB. Plain and simple, despite this being only the third game of his career. Don't expect him to be Shawn Merriman right now but he should not be riding the pine for 60min each week either.
I'd just like to point out that Shawne Merriman wasn't Shawne Merriman 2 games into his NFL career...
Here are the stats from the first 6 games of Merriman's career. Granted, they don't tell the whole story, but they give you an idea. It might take a while before he see's significant playing time if Thomas keeps it up.
Yea...this isn't a completely vague and made up post or anything... Merriman isn't even known for his FB instincts...DeMarcus Ware has good football instincts and he had 6 tackles through 2 games (both starts)...
Please explain this to me. You knew merriman would be great after 2 games because he showed instincts?
Dude Champ can tell you about Deuce Lutui from the Cardinals and tell us he has great instincts... As if Champ watches those other games.
