Because that would mean we'd have to throw the ball, and that's waaaaaay too risky for us. Plus pop warner play books don't have that formation
Some sage of the past once said: Three things can come out of a pass; two of them are bad. So ManHerm sticks to his gun, grinding the game to a halt with his vaunted running game.
I'd like to see us go double TE rather than 5 WR. With Baker, Keller and Franks we definitely have the personnel for it. And I think it confuses the defense more - is it a running play or a passing play ? We could do either out of that formation.
Indeed, I was thinking about aligning Chris Baker in the slot; I don't know how effective Baker might be in H-back position, but he's got decent blocking and decent hands, so if Favre sees something in the defense that favors run, he may be able to move Baker behind him, suddenly shifting the formation to I formation. If not, he can go with the single back formation and go about it. *Of course I don't do the game planning, so it's pointless*
Well, watching the games on TV its a bit difficult to tell, but my only assumption as to why Baker hasn't gotten more balls thrown to him is that his probably not the best route runner?... Can someone that goes to games chip in?
With Keller able to play the slot, H-back or even wide-out, he's a natural to have on the field with another TE. Baker and Franks can both block and catch. So there's no reason not to double up. I'd love to see 2 TE be our base formation. Schotty could do all kinds of crazy things out of it. You'd think he'd love it.
Frankly, that's the idea; Coles, Cotchery and Keller, all can stretch the defense with their downfield play. That's where Baker comes in; he can either provide block, or get underneath. He has a decent hand, so he should be making enough of mid-range pass on his own. Now add a good running game, and one of the downfield threat is bound to be open. Or that's what I would like to think. I haven't seen this kind of play from the Jets O (barring the 56 yard strike on Cotchery) as of yet.
Schotty is afraid to open up the offense. Breaking down the nutshell, he doesn't like for the defense to know whether it is going to be a pass or a run. Hence, if you go with a 5 WR set the defense knows that a pass is coming. Will they be able to stop it? Who knows. Will the fact that the defense knows what kind of play is coming stop Schotty from calling it? You bet your ass. Even a 4 WR set is probably something like 80-20 pass. He's more the 50-50, 60-40 guy.
thats sad because then there is no faith in who is on the field. I've seen great coaches essentially tell the other team what is about to happen, and then execute it. I'd like that to be the case here.
That's pretty much what they tried on 1st and goal from the 3 last week. Granted it was the run game instead of the pass, but same concept.
good point. Then it falls on the players for not executing... shit, that means we have bad players on offense. Reality just set in.... This sucks. I expect after the bye for this offense to cause problems for the 3 scrub teams after the bye and Buffalo. I pray for momentum and a team on fire going into Buffalo.
keller against a cb isnt going to stretch shit. keller against a safety isnt going to stretch shit. keller against a lb will surely stretch the field. but you run him and 3 wr out there and they will i assure you have a nickel at least out there. hey it could be worse remember when we had santana moss and our 3 wide sets consisted of coles, that white guy everyone loves whose name i cant remember and a FB, ahh those were the days. we used the 3 wr set 8 times a game and the FB was the 3rd wide 6 of them. guess ole spermy was trying to make sure they didnt put in a nickel formation to cover that quick as all hell fullback. on another note, maybe the receivers arent getting open downfield and he is checking down because of that? i dont know tv rarely shows what happens away from the ball. but it could be, someone let me know.
I wold like to se the Jets run more out of 3-4 wideout sets with Leon, old man jones has to have a lead blocker.
i would prefer to see baker and keller while driving the field and then put bubba in on the LOS and split keller in the slot in the red zone. havent seen it yet ive seen a whole lot of baker and franks while trying to drive the length of the field favre eyes a slow franks (whos utterly useless until you get in the red zone at this point in his career) with the playcalling thats been going on hes got to have some formations and sets hes yet to breakout.
