Patriots | Mayo only defender to play all snaps
    Fri, 19 Sep 2008 09:44:17 -0700

Mike Reiss, of The Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo has been on the field for all the defensive snaps through the first two games, the only defender to do so. According to the coaches, Mayo is second on the team with 16 tackles.

    ------------------------

NE runs the same 3-4 def as us, in fact Mangini used to run it. This is very alarming as Mayo obviously was sitting there for us at 6, the pick right before NE. From the first two games Gholston has been on the field for maybe 15% of def plays and has no where close to 16 tackles.

Did we get fooled by a workout warrior? Is it just me or every week does the "genious" luster seem like it is wearing off of Mangini and co?

He was projected to go to the Jets at #6 well before the combine. He holds sack records at THE Ohio State University. I don't think workout warrior is a proper label for him whether he works out or not.

Mayo was a LB in college. Gholston is learning a new position - give him some time, have an ounce of patience.

It's still really early, but I have to admit that I am concerned about him. I watch him when he goes in the game, and he just doesn't seem to have it. He doesn't seem to have any moves to beat the offensive linemen, he just bull rushes them. And he doesn't seem like he plays the game with any intensity, it kind of looks like he is out there just going through the motions.

at the time of draft our #1 need was a pass rusher..if we knew thomas and pace would play like this maybe we might have traded down and took him or mcelvin (how ever you spell it.) im not worried about gholston now.

since scouts say wait 3 years before you judge a player, i'll bring this thread up in 2010.

Brick, Gholston, Revis in the 1st half of last year (people still think Moss torched him in week 1, wasn't his assignment.)

Brick's judgment is this year. Revis next year. Gholston in 2010. Rhodes was last year, DRob in 06, etc.

This is what I've heard, read, watched from every scout in the NFL since I began following football. Its fine to speculate, wrong to judge at this point.

The 2 OLBs ahead of him are nasty and talented. Let him develop as if he was a QB learning with who is ahead of him teaching him.

Mayo is also playing ILB if I recall, a lot different responsibilities than an OLB, especially one that's changing from a DE to OLB.

Really...what's the rush?? Bryan Thomas and Pace are performing very well, we're top 5 in the league in sacks and our front 7 looks like a force. What is the problem with bringing Gholston along slowly? Would you rather him be out there for more snaps but be less effective then BT?

Don't lose sight of the bigger picture; the goal in bringing him here was to help our pass rush. By no means has he been dominant but the effect it has on Thomas has certainly helped our pass rush. In the meanwhile we can bring him along slowly.

Yeah, that's what I thought. Mayo is an ILB so he was not even on the Jets radar. I hate to admit it, but this was another brilliant pick by the Pats. Some criticized this pick as a reach but now it's looking like Mayo may be a finalist for DROY.

The one thing I'll say about the Gholston pick is thank God we acquired Pace. Gholston may turn out to be a great player but it's sure not going to be this year. The Jets would have been in a lot of trouble if Gholston were forced to start or play a significant # of snaps.

Remember after a year people thought that Mario Williams was going to be a bust. Those people are still eating crow.

He played MLB and OLB in college.

Same response to the same complaint.

Good for Mayo.. I don't recall him doing anything in our game.

They are not the same player or roles...

Mayo also plays for a much better and deeper team.

Huh? Then why has he played EVERY SINGLE defensive snap this season? I don't see how your point is relevant...

He is constantly lined up over the best pass blockers football teams have--their left tackles. I say wait and see

    You're under-selling us.

We trail only the Seahawks in sacks. We're leading the AFC.

If the Jets had drafted Jerod Mayo at #6, I would have flipped my shit. They tried to trade up for Ryan, McFadden and Long and they tried to trade down. They drafted the best player available for the team's most prominent need.

So the Pats got a ILB at the top of the first round. Good for them. 16 tackles in his first two starts. Wow. We got our ILB last year, in the second round- 41 tackles and a sack in his first two starts.

And I'm assuming Mayo would have replaced Barton, the guy leading our team in tackles, right?
