Favre on WR Chemistry Posted on September 17th, 2008 by Bassett Today, Favre answered the question on whether or not he feels he has chemistry with his receivers at this point. ?The chemistry has gotten a lot better. I would hope it would continue to get better, a lot like the chemistry I had with our guys in Green Bay the last couple years. Of course, Donald (Driver) and I had thrown the ball (together for many years). We had so much success together. This group is more of a veteran group, has been around and knows the game. So I would think the chemistry would come a little bit quicker. In my opinion, it has. The most important stat is wins. What leads to that? Plays obviously. In the game the other day, there were some plays that I could point to. The pass I threw to Jerricho (Cotchery) that was called back. He wasn?t open, but I felt like from watching him on tape and the little bit of time I spent with him, that our chances were better than theirs if I just threw it up to him and gave him a shot. I actually looked at L.C. (Laveranues Coles) on the same play. The corner was way off. (On) Jerricho?s side it was going to be a jump ball. I felt confident doing that. Things like that, not that you want to throw the balls up, but I feel confident that our guys can do it, especially in certain situations. The play on the goal line, the touchdown (to WR Chansi Stuckey), was a play we?d been talking about. It was a simple check, audible, or whatever you want to call it, trusting that our guys would get a pick or rub, and it worked. You start coming back to plays like that or you build off of that. You?re able to expand. Also, like the pass to Jerricho, at some point you just say, ?hey, guys are not going to be open all the time, I got to trust that these guys will make plays.? I feel confident with those guys.? > http://www.thejetsblog.com/2008/09/1...-wr-chemistry/
I read this elsewhere today and it was written in such a way that implied Coles was wide open but he threw to Cotch anyway--this article doesn't quite go there. Either way, I hope LC doesn't get upset about it.
If he gets upset that Brett Favre is implying that chemistry that needs to develop over time & by playing, rather than it's something that just magically appears the first 5 seconds you've been on the field together, then ... he's gotta stop being so sensitive, and start being more realistic. Here's the way "chemistry" math works: amount of "chemistry" Favre has with receivers: Driver >= Jennings > Cotchery > Coles because this is the amount of time Favre has played with receivers: Driver > Jennings > Cotchery > Coles Doh!
I'm sick of worrying about upsetting Coles. He should man up, and play ball. he's such a little bitch!
LC has made enough statements about his discomfort or whatever, i have no problem with Favre's pretty smart implication in that quote. I love LC but he has not dealt with this situation like a true professional should.
Coles is not quoted in this article and he's getting shit from the board. Wow. I feel like he can do nothing to please anyone here... He stay quiet in the preseason its a problem, he finally speaks- there is a problem... I'd like all of you to go find the article where Coles said "Put the loss on me" after the Pats game, and he continues to get slandered.... I get why Coles is a "Fuck You" kind of guy. I do not dislike anything he does or says, because its never that big of a deal.
Coles gets angry. So what if he does. He hasn't played that much anyway and frankly, hasn't been missed that much either. This team is ready to move on w/o LC as its already shown. Farve isn't waiting on Coles to get his shit together. Good for Farve and good for the Jets...
First up, the self-imposed 'silence' he exhibited was clearly his way of saying FU to management for releasing his buddy. You spin it like he's just been quiet and eagerly trying to adjust to a new QB. I can't believe that even you would admit that Coles was just being quiet. But, whatever. His track record for always being unhappy and mouthing off/bitching is his own fault and maybe that's why folks tend to mention him in this case. I cut the guy slack for the horrible childhood memories that may contribute to his plight. I don't know, I'm not a PH.D, but there is something going on that he can never be happy, at least publicly, with anything.
I feel bad for Coles having to go through that, but I was a supporter of his up to this point. Maybe it was the injury hindering his ability to get on the field with Favre, but if it's emotional problems not letting him get over the loss of Chad, it's become a detriment to his on-field play. That never happened before, whenever he acted up in camp he would still show up on the field, even to his own detriment. Those drops he had were inexcusable compared with the type of concentration he's shown in the past in much more difficult situations. He would lay down in traffic for Chad, and now he's not even displaying adequate concentration when Favre throws to him. I'm also not writing off lingering concussion symptoms from the list of possibilities. But it's complicated and nothing is confirmed about why he's been playing out of character, and you can't just assume it's one or the other. Just that it sucks.
After the two drops who would blame him. With that being said, I do believe Coles will be fine with more reps with Favre
I couldnt agree more. Shut up guys! Coles is not the baby, its the fans on this board. Shut up, dont even talk about LC, just shut up!
You make me have to find the article and I'm on a dial-up at home! http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2008/09/news_and_notes_from_jets_pract.html Follow us ... or rather Brett ... as he describes a third-quarter pass play to a well-covered Jerricho Cotchery even though Laveranues Coles was open during Sunday's game against the Patriots. "I felt like, watching (Cotchery) on tape, and the little time that I spent with him, our chances were better than theirs if I just threw it up there and gave him a shot," Favre said. "I actually looked at LC (Coles) on the same play; the corner was playing off. On Jerricho's side, it was really, it was going to be a jump ball. And I felt confident doing that."
I dont think thats what he meant by way off. Way off, as opposed to right up on. As in, the corner was playing the deep routes, not bumping him at the line. Get me? Like how everybody complains that Barrett leaves a big cushion when hes at corner. Thats playing 'way off' the wide reciever, and when the corner lines up that way, its harder to beat them deep. Which is where the Jets were trying to go on that play. At least Im pretty sure thats what he meant. I dont think the guy would come to the papers and tell them that hes purposely not throwing to his uncovered receivers. I mean, give him a little credit.
your nuts if you dont think we need coles. b.t.w, vs. the cheatriots, coles 3 catches, 83 yards, cotch 1 catch 20 yards. so for all you coles bashers, wtf are you talking about??????????
They were inexcusable drops, guys are going to drop balls it happens but I don't ever remember Coles having 2 bigger drops in any game. The only play that sticks out is giving up on that INT Chad threw in the Oakland playoff game in 2002.
Actually, this statement could not be any more wrong. I am a big fantasy football guy so I know all the stats such as targets to a WR by a QB. Here is the line so far LC = 10 targets resulting in 4 catches for 77 yds 0 td JC = 9 targets resulting in 4 catches for 100 yds 1 td So LC has actually been Favre's targeted WR on one more throw so far. Numbers are very similar but to say that JC is clearly Favre's favorite target is just not true. In fact from a fantasy perspective Stuckey has had the most success since he has scored 2 tds....
