Favre hopes to erase 'years of frustration' for Jets By Jane McManus The Journal News ? September 18, 2008 FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - If there was any doubt as to whether Brett Favre understands what it means to be a Jet, it was erased yesterday. Not only did he address whether he is throwing the ball enough, but he did it in such a way that he showed a pretty deep understanding of what this franchise has been through in the years since Joe Namath introduced the AFL to the big time. Fans and critics lamented that a 19-10 loss to the Patriots showed that, as much things have changed for the Jets, much remains the same. But Favre challenged that. "I didn't come here to lose," Favre said. "Neither did Alan Faneca, Kris Jenkins or the guys who have been here before. You could see like Shaun Ellis' frustration at the end of the game. I mean, that's 10 years of frustration that he's had to go through. We're trying to change that, old and new." He said he was not frustrated by the play-calling from his new coaches, even on a first-and-goal play from 3 yards out. Three running plays were ultimately unsuccessful, but Favre said he was fine with them as they came in even though he doesn't have the authority to veto plays on the goal line. "Three plays in that game didn't make the difference," Favre said. "There was a lot of plays that made the difference. I had numerous opportunities during the course of the game on throws that I could have made that could have been the difference I missed. I underthrew Chris Baker on a corner route that was picked. It resulted in seven points. You can't do that. So you can point to a lot of plays. "I think we all need to take ownership in not only the wins but the losses," Favre said. "That's the only way we're going to get better. I feel like the path we're on is the right path." Even Jets coach Eric Mangini said he could understand the second-guessing. "Everyone is evaluating the game, and I appreciate that," Mangini said. "I just am always working to try to put in the best play at that time." The 1-1 Jets, who run each practice with loud music playing on sideline speakers, started stretches yesterday afternoon to the theme from "Monday Night Football." The team is practicing for a game in San Diego this Monday. The Chargers are 0-2 and certainly motivated, and Favre said the game was crucial for the Jets as well. "I feel like we're in a must-win situation as well," Favre said. Good will punting: A day after punter Ben Graham was released, Reggie Hodges, a 2005 sixth-rounder from Ball State, was signed. Waylon Prather, another punter, was signed to the practice squad. Prather came out of San Jose State, where rookie cornerback Dwight Lowery was his teammate. Mangini said it was tough to let Graham go. "I have a strong memory of being in Australia, in Geelong in a cow paddock, with Ben's girlfriend at the time who is now his wife, pouring rain," Mangini said. "But I just thought it was the best thing for us right now to make the change." Extra points: Ellis was credited with a sack in the Patriots game, giving him two on the season and the Jets eight, which ties them for second place in the league. ... Mangini said he expected cornerback Justin Miller (foot) to be ready to play soon. Reach Jane McManus at jmcmanus@lohud.com and read her Jets Journal blog at jets.lohudblogs.com.
I love how all of a sudden 1997-2006 are erased and we have been this pathtic franchise forvever. We have been one of the better teams in the AFC since 1997, only 3 AFC teams have more postseason apps than we do this decade and we have been better than Favre's Packers for the last 10 years. I am sick of this perception that we have been a pathetic team all decade.
I, for one, am with you on this, but get ready for the "only the Super Bowl matters so we're just a bunch of losers and you're happy to accept it so you're a loser too" posts...
Only the Superbowl matters. So, we're all just a bunch of losers. You're happy to accept it so you're a loser too. Sorry, couldn't resist that. Seriously, one of the big things I hate about being a Jets fan is the feeling around everybody who's only semi-football literate that "The Jets always stink". Grr. We've had good teams. We haven't had teams that dominated anybody (at least since the 41-0 win over the Colts however many years ago in the playoffs). But we haven't always been awful. Still doesn't change the sinking feeling I have in the pit of my stomach that we're going to get destroyed on MNF. Maybe it's just PTSD from the Thanksgiving game last year, I dunno.
Favre can't erase anything as long as we have the coaching staff that we do. Unless he just starts calling his own plays that is and ignoring everything Manasshole and company send in.
You are right, but during that stretch it was still been pretty depressing. For me atleast. 1997- Amazing turn around with Parcells 1998-Fairy tale season ends just short of the Super Bowl 1999-Vinny goes down, Lucas put in too late, Super Bowl caliber team goes 8-8 2000- Team collapses at the end of the season and misses the playoffs. 2001- Team wins in Oakland to make playoffs, then loses in Oakland 6 days later. 2002-Good story with Chad, still just 9-7 after poor start, great year though. 2003- Chad Goes down, season ruined, 6-10 2004- Great season, Doug Brien fills Jets fans with heartbreak to end it. 2005- Pennington/Fiedler go down, season terrible, hard to watch. 2006-Easy schedule and some good breaks got the team a Wild Card. Fun to watch atleast. 2007-No o-line, team had some bad breaks 4-12 season, very hard to watch. The stretch was good, but it has had many bad sides to it too.
The scariest thing in this whole article, for me, comes at the end. "justin Miller should be ready to play". Noooooooooooo!!!!!!
term up and down describes our team over the last decade, one year in the postseason, one year out of it... thats inconsistency at it's best. How can we be recognized as quality when one year we go 9-7 or 10-6, and the next we are lucky to go 6-10? If we could string together maybe 2 10 or 11 win seasons in a row, people really would believe we didnt suck as much as the previous 30 years post Namath.
