why not??....we must have ran 90% on first(just a guess).......too predictable.....and did we need to get FAVRE to run this type of offense.......i think CLEMENS would have been fine.
Against the Pats we ran 13 times on first down and passed 9 times on first down. We also ran for 4.95 YPC against them. The offense was killed by untimely penalties and drops.
Broadway Brett is right about the number of 1st down run vs. passes, get your facts straight. In fact, the second drive of the game we threw of first down after a drive where we had successfully marched down the field on the ground mostly. You use the run to set up the pass. It baffled me why we'd abandon something that was working immediately, but that's Schotty thinking he's smarter than everyone else. I'm not saying use the run predominantly, but use it wisely. We didn't. Someone threw a stat at me last night about how the running game was effective because we had over 100 yards on the ground. That's not the case. The run is effective when it draws the secondary and defensive backfield closer to the LOS to open up passing options. They didn't do that. We don't have active tailbacks who can run the ball all day long, so you use it when it benefits your gameplan.
Agreed....we need to pass on every down...Thats why we got Favre. Infact, I say we trade Jones back to Chicago and ask for Rexy to back up Favre incase he gets injured.
Playcalling was getting to predictable sunday. We ran just about 90 % of the time on first down or atleast it felt like it but it definately couldnt have hurt to have favre roll out do one of his classic play action fakes and bomb it to who ever. Unfortunately i think he would of been sacked or just thrown an incompletion cause cotch and co couldnt catch shit falling from the sky.
The interesting thing was when we ran it on 1st down we had our scoring opportunities. On the first drive we ran on 1st down every time and had the MFG. The next drive we passed on 1st down and ended up with a 3 and out. The following drive we ran it on 1st down every time and had the FG. 2 more 3 and outs after throwing on 1st down and also an INT after throwing on 1st down killed 4 more drives. And on the TD drive we ran it on 1st down 3 time vs. passing twice.
I don't know it just seemed like 1st and 10 was an anomoly...usually 1st and 15, or 1st and 20, or whatever. I mean we started the game with 12 men in the huddle... gotta cut out those penalties and our options on 1st down will be better.
That's the key right there. It was penalties that killed our offense. Blame the coaches for the lack of discipline for the players. But it's impossible to call a good game when youre starting in the whole every possession
