Honestly, I'm just loving the fact that we have a coach like Mangini running the show...A coach that has learned from some of the best. Ever since I started following football and the Jets, back in 1995, I have heard all types of football fans talk about the trenches, most fans of the trenches believe that thats where the games are won and lost...In the trenches and you know what? After watching the Jets over the years...I can agree, the trenches are everything...Well maybe not everything but still...It's really an important aspect of the game and I'm just excited to be a fan of the Jets with a front office and coach like Mangini, who actually understand the game of football What was it? Like 3 years ago when the Jets drafted Ferguson #4 overall followed by Mangold with our 2nd overall pick? Honestly...I wont lie, I wanted Reggie Bush for the simple fact the Jets were dying for a play-maker @ the time but after we drafted D'Brickishaw followed by Mangold...I started to think...Maybe this Mangini coach is onto something, maybe...Just maybe he has a long term plan and maybe...Just maybe the Jets will have a shot in the AFC East for years to come. Just look @ the types of Moves that Mangini has made in about 3 years as the Jets coach. -Drafted Ferguson (Has the talent and potential to be a Franchise LT) with the 1st overall pick @ #4. -Drafted Mangold (Has already shown that he's one of the best young Centers around) with the Jets second overall pick 3 years ago. -Signed Alan Faneca (A veteran LG...Some say he's one of the best to ever play the position, some say that Faneca could even have another 3 or 4 solid years as a starting LG, which is great news for the Jets rushing attack! -Released Clement and replaced him with a solid veteran in Damien Woody! Man did I love that move, it was needed...I love this signing for the simple fact...It's an upgrade over that Clement guy...And thats the exciting part. -Replaced D.Robertson after the signing of Kris Jenkins, one of the best offseason moves the Jets made this year, in my eyes. (If all goes well, the Jets could have one of the better 3-4 NT's in the game) With Jenkins in the middle...I expect this Jets defense to get after the opposing running backs in the same ways that we went after Williams and Brown. If it's true that the NT position is the most important aspect in a 3-4 Defense, well, I guess the Jets have one of the largest 3-4 lineman in the game...Which is different from previous years (Robertson). I have loved this move all offseason because I just had a lot of hope that the Jets were making the right moves. So far it looks great Those are only SOME of the moves that Mangini has made as far as the trenches go...Lets not forget that Mangini likes something in Coleman who I would have NEVER given a chance (If I were the coach) But you know what? I'm really starting to like this Coleman guy and maybe, just maybe...He's the perfect fit for a 3-4 defensive end? This guy plays tough and seems strong. Also...I guess it's safe to say that Mangini also understand the 3-4 Defense! Just look at the trade of Vilma! I was a huge fan of Vilma, like everyone else, but the fact of the matter was this...It was easy to see that Vilma was a 4-3 MLB...TRYING to play the role of a 3-4 IMLB and it wasn't working...David Harris was an animal last year in 2007, and I'm excited to know that Mangini has started to build our defense around this guy. I can go on and on...The moves that the Jets have made since the Mangini era has been really good in my eyes. Gholston is another player that should fit the 3-4 Defense perfect for years to come...What about Pace? Wow, this guy can really play OLB and Bryan Thomas may be the story of the year for some Jet fans! Wow...This is really starting to look like a Steelers type of 3-4 Defense! Also...I think everyone knows that Mangini is big when it comes to the secondary...Two words: Dwight Lowery! If Lowery can be anything like Revis...With Rhodes flying around, making plays..With solid deph, this Jets secondary can be one of the best for many of years, I believe that. Like I was saying...When it comes to the O-Line, D-Line and 3-4 Defense...I have nothing but great things to say about Mangini...I think it's safe to say that I really support Mangini and honestly...I hope Mangini is the face of the Jets in the same ways that Bill Cowher has been the face of the Steelers for all those years, BB of the Pats...I just hope Mangini sticks around with the Jets because...I think we could have one of the smartest guys around, as our coach...One who understands the game of football...I'm just excited that we got "Stuck" with Mangini  Anyone else feel the same? Anyone else feel that Mangini is making solid moves as far as our 3-4 D and trenches go? -
So here's the flipside: 1. Tried to shoehorn a bunch of 4-3 guys into a 3-4 system instead of maintaining the 4-3 and drafting guys into a hybrid system that eventually went 3-4. This lead to defensive failures two years running that dragged the rest of the team down. 2. Has traded any number of mid-round draft picks to fill holes now. Did this two years ago and last year also and long-term it's not a winning strategy unless you already have a bunch of pro bowlers and you're picking up pieces to slot in around them. That is an end of successful run strategy not a beginning of run strategy. 3. Couldn't make a decision on the QB's for his life last year, sticking with Chad too long and then bringing Clemens in after it had become clear that he did not consider Clemens to be a good option at this point. Way to diminish both of your QB's. There are many other processes that have failed under Mangini's watch over the last two seasons but those are the three that stand out glaringly. BTW, he also has no balls when it comes to flatout winning the game. He's just as bad as Herm was in terms of playing it safe down the stretch and often falling short as a result. This was true in 2007 and it was true last week. That Dolphin team had no business still being in the game in the fourth quarter. There's no killer instinct there at all.
I've rewatched this game probably 5 times since last weekend and the end is extremely frustrating. As I'm rewatching the game though, I keep wondering if we were holding back at all against the Dolphins to give the Pats less tape to look at. I know how ridiculous that sounds, but I expect to see a lot more creativity on D with our blitzes this week and I would bet we get Keller more involved. As far as the original post goes, I don't think anyone can argue that the talent level of the team has gone up under Mangini, now let's see if he can coach.
Well...I'm not sure of the Jets holding back for NE because I would hope that Miami was the only team on the Jets mind @ the time of the 4th Q...I just think the Jets were playing not to lose the game on the road...It would be great to play aggressive and go for the kill but @ the same time...We have all seen Pennington make plays and pick D's apart when opposing D's send the blitz...You never know...Maybe Mangini and company played the 4th Q with a plan...A plan not to let Pennington WIN the game with the last drive. Who knows? All I know is this...We will know more about this Jets team after today!
Even with trading several mid rounders to plug holes, we are still one of the youngest teams in the league. While long term this is not the way to go, it was much needed given the lack of over all talent the was left on the roster after the Bradway era. We also have traded several vets for mid round picks that we start collecting on this year. The Kendall trade and Vilma trade will add picks to us to help bolster the youth and depth of our team this year. You can not just look at the trading away of picks without looking into what we have done to get extra picks back.
Don't forget the best trade of all, when we traded our second round pick to Washington for what became Kellen Clemens, Thomas Jones and another second round pick.
ok my turn! 1. Worked with the personell he had. Why keep a shitty system and personell in place until you can either swap out everyone needed for the new system or get players for the new system and force them to play 4-3 and then mash the 3-4 into them at a later date? Nothing complex here. No great change comes without pains. Simple. 2. Sent away picks to get the QUALITY players. That's pretty easy too, huh? Why wait until tomorrow to get what you need today. Next time you need milk, wait a week. 3. When presented with a choice of equal options, it's any man's game. A couple of years ago you were probably bitching about Herm not changing QBs at any point. WHat other processes? The balls part I can't deny. BUT he reminds me a bit of Parcells, that he'll throw those wacky plays at you in the middle of the game and try to not to get crazay at the end. This similarity becomes more vague with the FB pass at the end a few years back. I'm sorry I just don't agree with most of what you're saying. You can't say his draft moves have been bad. To a larger degree, he's been dead on. Tannenbaum (haha said Bradway at first) isn't "making" the draft calls. He's not all that much of a personell guy regardless of the title. He's taking queues from scouts, coaches, film (maybe not so much) but it's not solely on is shoulders by any stretch of the imagination. Game 1 folks. Nobody claimed they'd be amazing, let alone before they've even played a live game together.
1. I don't know if I agree with you there; frankly, I don't. Jets then didn't have the space eater (that Dslob was not). Wouldn't have been that sucessful even if Mangini did run 4-3. On top of that, JAbe was being a whiny bitch that he ever was - and eventually got his ass shipped to Atlanta. Sounds like a winning formula, eh? I was furious last year when Mangini traded away the picks to secure two high picks; well, if at all, he found 2 starters that could contribute from year 1, and I'm willing to give him a pass for that. In any draft, if you do find 2 starters, that draft should be considered a success - the only downside of this approach is, obviously there is no one growing under the wing. I'm hopeful that this will be taken care of in a few years. What if Clemens indeed is a dud? That would be my only criticism toward Mangini and Co.; instead of going for Clemens, they could have gone for Marcus McNeil, and possibly seal off the OL problem for years. I wasn't a fan of Clemens pick, and I still don't think Clemens has anything to offer in NFL level. The bolded part concerns me greatly. It's not just the last week's game. Look at the both Dolphins' game last year. The playcalling in 4th quarter reeks of Hermism, both on offense and defense. I hate that.
See, it's hard for me to say I love the guy, as another coach in the NFC, in the span of a mere 2 seasons, has already shown that he is probobaly a better overall coach. I am of course speaking of the packers very own MM. He took a 4 - 12 team, in the span of two years, to the NFC championship game. He has hte defense looking strong, and the offense looking potent. The problem with Mangini... is that he hasn't gotten it done. In fact, many people blame him for last game even being close. The jury really is out on the guy. As most have pointed out, Mangini really has pretty little to do with FA signings... that is the GM's job. Yeah, he gets to have some say... but really it's the GM that has been making all those moves that you are coveting. Mangini strictly as a head coach does not have a good track record on head coach right now. He now has a team that can win around him, so this season will be very telling. Of course, great coachs can win with crap players.... but he's not in that category.
LOL at the no killer instinct in the Dolphin game. That is such pure and utter bullshit.................. The game was over had it not been for Woody's penalty. The game is over, shit that game is not even close, had the Jets had a kicker but oh yeah who needs a place kicker. The game is over had it not been in 10,000 degree weather. Killer instinct? Give me a fucking break. Again, LOL at killer instinct.
So you want to stay in the 4-3 and just stay average?? He wanted the 3-4 and it took only 2 years to get his guys for it. Besides the fact you fail to mention he took that below average team his first year to a 10-6 record. Last year even in a 4 win season the team claerly didnt quit under him.
The reason I like Mangini is because when he has a lot of positive things to say about a player they have a big game right after, making Mangini look like an "I told you so" coach... good stuff. Still needs a better brain trust. The Jets still need a better DC.
This is just not true. The Jet's starters rank in the bottom half of the league in terms of age and would rank lower than 16th if Brett Ratliff was the QB instead of Brett Favre. We do have a few really good young players but the majority of our starters are either prime right now or post-prime. That's not a good situation for a team that has gone 4-12 twice in the last three seasons. Talented teams that are significantly younger than the Jets include the Colts, Packers, Chargers, Panthers, Bills, Texans and Browns. Teams that are in the same age range as the Jets include the Steelers, Vikings, Eagles, Bears and Saints. I think signing Faneca and trading Favre were two moves that are going to improve us for the year immensely, which I support, but we're going to pay a heavy price very shortly down the road.
Jesus, the difference between the oldest and youngest teams in the NFL is 2 freaking years. Wow so the Jets are + or - 1 year from the oldest or youngest. Yes you have uncovered a looming disaster! hmy: http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nflnation/0-1-841/Rams-become-NFL-s-oldest-team.html
