All Jet and Giant season ticket holder must read the article by Richard Sandomir in today"s NY Times "Naming Rights and Historical Wrongs". Allianz which is being considered for the naming rights to the new stadium has disturbing ties to Nazi Germany. Please read the article and comment. This is a very important issue for all of us.

I haven't read the article but it is a German company. Pretty much any company that existed in germany back then would have had to do business with the Nazis or be shut down. The bigger question is what the heck does the actions of people long dead, done 60 or 70 years ago have anything to do with naming a stadium in 2010.

American auto makers built tanks for WWII those tanks were responsible for tens of thousands of deaths. Lets shut those murderers down today!!!!

As I noted in another thread, virtually all of the large German companies were very complicit with the Nazis, or they wouldn't have survived - Krupp, I.G. Farben, Siemens, Volkswagen, BMW, Daimler-Benz, Rheinmetal, Flick KG. The German subsidiaries of Ford (Fordwerke) and GM (Opel) also used slave laborers (although there isn't much evidence that the American parent companies made any money from these subsidiaries before or during the war). Unless you're going to say that German companies need not apply, this is what will be the case.

American companies are also hardly pure when it comes to their practices over the years. If we're going to talk about insurance companies, for example, Aetna and New York Life were among the insurance companies that insured slaves (as property in case they escaped or died) in this country.

I still think JetBlue should get the naming rights, whether they have the money or not. That is just fitting.

Nice attitude!! "Get over it"?? Are you thinking before you laconically disregard the argument in front of you?

What if we decided to name the stadium Crucifix Coliseum? Or maybe Crusades Circle? Of, I know, how 'bout Al Queda Arena?

It is one thing to say "All companies had to roll over to the Nazis. . ." but there is a completely different issue at play here. After WWII ended, the Allianz folks remained scumbags towards the Jews. They refused to pay out life insurance policies to the families of the deceased who were killed in Concentration Camps. Imagine the following scenario, if you will:

You are a hard working guy. You earn enough money to pay your bills, feed your family. You even work OT shifts so that you can afford to pay your Life Insurance Premiums every month. Now, the big, bad Third Reich Rolls into town, commits unspeakable acts of horror and aggression upon your family, beats you to within an inch of your life. They place you in a prison because of your religious beliefs. They separate you from your friends, family. They starve you, then beat you some more. They force you to work grueling hours in the most inhumane of conditions. At any moment, at the whim of the Commanding Officers, you or your loved ones could be sent off to die in an horrific (what the Nazis would later refer to as) "experiment" that strips you of every last shred of dignity you had left.

Now, your surviving family is left with nothing. All your assets have been liquidated, even down to the gold fillings in your teeth. Good thing you made those payments to the insurance company so diligently every month...oh, wait! Surely the the company who was "just trying to survive" would not deny your family the last ray of hope to regain any semblance of the life they had before those tanks rolled into town. I mean, they were just doing what the Nazis told them, and now that they are gone...Nope, too bad. You family is sent back to their burned down homes with NOTHING...

A generation later, your descendants have moved to a new country, started a new life. They even save their money to support the local sports team by buying hats, jerseys. They watch every game on TV. They struggle to save enough money to buy tickets to one game a year, now that the corporations have swept in and taken all the seats. When you show up at the arena, there is a huge sign, in big glowing letters advertising the very company that denied you the reparations you so justly deserved.

    You'd be upset, right?

    Got it, pal?

So we can get over it when you name the Stadium something a little less incendiary...

I'm sorry the name upsets you. I would certainly be upset if I was in the situation you described.

The problem is, isn't everything incendiary to someone?

I think what RT meant is that we, together united as one, need to move on and stop dwelling in the past. That way we can make new good times. and memories to enjoy. You can't be upset when you're happy.

...for the record, JetBlue gets my vote.

Giants, Jets cancel talks with Allianz
    AP Sports
    Posted: 2008-09-12 13:52:56
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -The New York Giants and New York Jets ended naming-rights talks with a German insurance company that once had ties to the Nazis.

Allianz (AHL'-ee-ahns) had been looking to buy naming rights to the stadium being built in northern New Jersey.

The move was criticized by Jewish groups and Holocaust survivors. The company says it has atoned for its history and should not be judged by its World War II record.

Allianz officials confirmed that talks have ended. Discussions are continuing with other potential partners for naming rights.
