ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Tim Rattay and Chris Simms were sent back to the airport after arriving at the Patriots' facility Monday.

GM Scott Pioli reportedly told the free agents that "sorry, circumstances have changed," and they were no longer wanted. Randy Moss is allegedly pushing for New England to sign old friend Daunte Culpepper, who retired last week. Another option would be to sign Matt Gutierrez off the practice squad.

Strange. But Culpepper would be perfect for Moss.

WOW. Now thats a scenario. Personally, I think Culpepper is completely washed up, clearly considering he just retired. But who knows, if he can get back connected with Moss anything can happen. And Im almost positive Gutierrez was a backup in college too. Whats up with the pats and backup college qbs? Brady and Gutierrez on Michigan, and Cassell on USC

You know, Kerry Collins got his job with Titans about a week to go till kickoff two seasons ago. We all know how that turned out, right? I'm keeping my finger crossed on this one. Culpepper would be the best option for the Jets - if cramming the entire book in a span of a month is such a huge disadvantage, what about cramming the entire book in less than a week? I'd say juicy target for sacks.

He's dumb as rocks, but you can't argue against his physical tools. Didn't have the second best season in history for a Qb a few years back? Him to Moss was money back int he day.

To answer the question in the thread title.

No way will Culpepper be NE's QB on Sunday.

Oh, this is amazing, it will be fun to watch the patsies clubhouse tear itself apart over this.

I love Moss playing amateur GM for his club.

There is no way that could be possible, is there?

    Like Brett Favre? lol

This development was as surprising as the sun rising in the east this morning. You guys may not know Moss well, but we NFC North fans are intimately familiar with the Culpepper-Moss connection.

Oh man, that would rule. The D might put up record numbers of picks for one day.

I'm not sure what to say. I actually used to like Culpepper, maybe he'd be better than Cassel.

I think they are staying with Cassell and that is why everybody is being sent home. That also means no Culpepper or anyone else.

Or maybe they made a decision on Culpepper? Who knows with that team.

All I know is it must suck for Cassel. Moss and seemingly many others don't want him.

There's a reason why nobody in the league wanted this guy to start for them.....I'd be more worried if Belichick brought back Doug Flutie.

That doesn't make sense to me. They need more depth to back up Cassell, at the very least you need at least as much depth at QB for him as you needed for Brady. At the least. Not so much for the next game, but the whole season. Brady is out for the season. They have to bring someone else on, and so from their POV, the sooner the better.

Actually the Packers tried to sign him as a FA after Favre retired ... as a backup to Rodgers though. Culpepper turned them down, was holding out for a starting job. I think he was nuts to not go to GB, there's no guarantee that Rodgers will work out, he's proven to be injury prone, and the team is otherwise deep. But who knows what Culpepper thinks.

Oh that's right, we do know what he thinks, thanks to that letter he wrote to accompany his retirement. This will probably make it less likely he gets invited to Foxboro though ... oops.

Culpepper would be a great pick up by the Pats. He can still play, he has an arm and he knows the personnel in New England.
