Change of scenery often makes all the difference with a young QB. New scheme, fresh start with the head coach and offensive coordinator, change of surroundings (bet Clemens would be MUCH happier in suburban Minnesota than in New Jersey.) I think the Vikes might see some potential there and if they can get him for a 4th round pick why not take a shot? It's not like Clemens is an abject failure at this point. He's had one muffed opportunity on a very bad team with a QB controversy swirling around him as it happened.
I think its a terrible move to get rid of him for a 4th. Unless we are getting a very good live body that can help us win now we should keep both him and Ratliff. Clemens has serious tools and shouldn't be given up on without a decent return.
That's right, believe everything you read and hear because rumors always come true. Lets have a backup QB with zero experience backup out 39 year old QB an risk our season after investing all this $ and believe these fans that gave up on CLemens already. Hey, the Brooklyn bridge is available
I think it is a break even move. It's clear at this point that Clemens can't win the starting job here outright. He couldn't beat out Chad last year (admittedly a long shot although it was his second year) and he couldn't beat him out this year to stop the Jets from getting on the Brett Favre Express. If Clemens was ready to go then Brett Favre is in Tampa Bay right now. I agree with you that Clemens has good tools to work with. That's why he's retained some value despite his early career struggles. I also think that he's probably not going to succeed with Mangini and Schottenheimer as his mentors here. If the chemistry was good there we wouldn't be having this conversation at all. You can tell when a coach likes his QB and I have never felt that Mangini liked Clemens once he had him on the roster.
this statement frustrates me. favre is not the only player on the field. the team was improved BEFORE favre and will be ok if he gets hurt. will they be the same no but the season would be far from over. please get off brett favres dick.
Did Mangini name KC the #2 QB? That makes sense then, it wasn't because he was better than Ratliff but to get more value for in him in a trade.
Bullshit Chad apoligist!!!!!!!!! Clemens never got a chance to beat out Chad this year and Favre was signed because our veteran QB sucked and we let him go. Clemens is going no where. Yahoo's believed we just cut Chatman
Totally disagree with your entire premise. This team is built to win now they made a huge upgrade for now with Favre. Clemens isn't ready to lead us or MN to a SB this year and MN is a win now team. He is still in development and other than a rebuild situation isn't going to be a top guy this year. No offense but your dislike for Mangini and Shot also comes into play here. If Mangini and Shot are sound in their approach this team will win and Clemens if he has the goods will develop. If Mangini and Shot don't have the goods than we are screwed either way. Your position toward Mangini last year and this year has nothing to do with Clemens.
Yes but QB is the most important position on the field but of course should we trade Clemmens that means we would have 2 QB's with a grand total of ZERO regular season passes thrown behind him. A practice squad guy and a 5th round rookie.
I think we might be able to get a 3rd for Clemens. I doubt we'll trade him though. Keeping him makes more sense than keeping Ainge. It's definitely possible though.. I didn't think they'd bring in Favre... If he's shipped off to Minnesota, he'll light things up.. and you can quote me on that. hmy:
And what did we have when Clemens backed up Pennington as the #2 in his rookie year before he finally got demoted? A QB with 0 regular season passes and 0 months of experience. We are still better off now.
It'd be nice to get one of those conditional picks for him: say a 4th rounder that upgrades to a 3rdif he becomes the Vikings start QB for more than 4 games this season, upgrades to a 2nd if he takes them to the playoffs and upgrades to a personally delivered .357 magnum plus ammunition to every Jet's fan if the Vikes win the Super Bowl with him so that we can either go to Florham Park and shoot up the place or put ourselves out of our misery.
Jackson and Clemens both throw good deep balls. The problem was that last year they did not get help from their receivers (Williamson, Ferguson, McCareins- all three have mastered the fine art of the dropped pass). The difference is that Jackson throws much better on medium throws, those of the 10-20 yard variety. He exhibited good ability to throw the ball into tight spaces. This is why I like him. Both made their share of boneheaded plays last year. Clemens made more bad ones, but Jackson's bad ones were more embarrassing and therefore he was ridiculed more on message boards and on football radio and television programs. Again, I don't understand why the Jets would trade Clemens, unless they were going to bring in another QB with starting experience and I also don't understand why the Vikings feel they need a fourth quarterback.
I'd prefer to keep Clemens. He's still young and could develop into something. But if he were traded, I'd think several teams would be interested. Look how QB-challenged the clubs are in Kansas City, San Francisco and Chicago. They strike me as much more desperate than Minnesota (who has been fairly high on Tavaris Jackson).
