I just saw this brief by Gary Grund, can anyone offer insight on this or is it a stretch, and just a theory on Grund's part? Iv'e always found his writing to be pretty reliable and reasonable. Friday, August 29th 2008, 11:28 am by Gary Grund If the Jets wanted any shot at retaining Erik Ainge for the practice squad, they made a huge mistake in playing him last night. Ainge, a fifth-round draft pick by the Jets in this year?s draft, now faces the possibility of being cut by the team after Brett Ratliff?s recent surge through the depth chart. Ainge saw action for the first time in the NFL taking over at quarterback with about two minutes left in the second quarter. He finished the game and did a good job, going 10 for 16 in pass attempts for 131 yards with one touchdown pass and no interceptions. By playing Ainge in last night?s game, the Jets have now showcased Ainge for other teams if the team does intend to cut him. If the Jets chose not to play Ainge this preseason, there was a chance that the Jets would have been able to cut him and sign him to the practice squad without being claimed by another team. It is uncommon for teams to carry four quarterbacks in a season, but maybe after all of this, the Jets will decide to carry four quarterbacks after all?
 I love that FITM gets the beat writer treatment around here. I would be pretty surprised if we cut Ainge, but it's possible.
2 ?'s At the risk of looking even more foolish than you guys think I am, what is "FITM" Mr. Soss, were you able to do anymore work on sig's? I was lookin for mine, but I assume you're pretty swamped
dude whats the big deal if he gets cut. 5th round picks get cut all the time. It's not the end of the world. If Ratliff is better then why not. I'd rather see us actually use that roster spot to build depth somewhere rather than just wasting a roster spot so Mangini looks like he has a better draft
That Gary Grund guy is something else. I hear he also poses around here by the name FarveIsTheMan, or something like that. The ever so famous FITM, of course
How can we keep him...we are not keeping 4 QB's. It just doesn't make sense. If the Jets knew what they had in Ratliff they would have never drafted him in the 1st place. I would love to sign him to the practice squard, assuming nobody picks him up but 4th string QB's are a dine a dozen. Hell, we could pick up Culpepper if we needed another QB.
I thought Gary Grund was a New York Jets, New York Mets, and New York Giants beat writer. Am I wrong?
I don't know...... I'm not in the "clique...or loop", I was just posting some info for feedback and to stir some conversation....I guess you guys are just blowin smoke up my ass.....lol.... all good, I can handle it..... good stuff.....
I'm sorry but cut Ainge, 4th Qbs are worthless as tits on a boar. The #2 won't see much action and #3 none at all. Use that spot for another D lineman to cycle in or a special teams headhunter.
Tell that to the Ravens who cut late round draft pick Derek Anderson. I'm sure they wish they had him back over the last couple of years. Some teams actually think ahead more than just the immediate season. Pats carried 4 QB's, one of which was Brady. That turned out pretty well for them. Since QB is the most important position on the field, if you're going to err with a roster spot, do it there. If the guy looks like he has some potential keep him on the squad.
Hell the way things have been going, I say cut Kellen and keep ratty and ainge, I like what they've shown in preseason..........
Often times it's not a bad idea, but Clemens, Ratliff, and Ainge all need a lot of work before they could become top notch NFL QBs. Because Favre does not miss games, why waste a roster spot on a 4th QB? Two developmental QBs is one thing, but three is too much for my liking.
Ainge will be assigned to the practise squad, i very much doubt that any team picks him up, he hasn't really shown anything to suggest that any team should take him off the Jets hands. He put together a nice drive the other night, but other than that all i keep hearing about is how he makes bad decisions in camp, throws picks, under throws/ Over throws WR'ers. No way he stays on the roster. I liked him in college but we just have no need for him at this moment in time.
