-Wow, just wow! I have not had a chance to post on the GangGreen since before the Jets signed Bret Favre because I haven't had access to the computer and as of right now, I'm pumped up like never before! I remember in 1998 when I had this same feeling, I was a lot younger @ the time but this year... It's like I just cant wait for the Jets team of 08 to take the field against the Dolphins-I just cant wait! Thank the football gods for the NFL season ticket because I have a feeling this should be an exciting season for Jet fans... Not only do we have a solid head coach but we now have an explosive Offense led by a HOF Quarterback and a Defense thats starting to shape into a true 3-4 defense! I'm also pumped up to see what our special teams can do this year. All in all, I was excited about this team BEFORE Bret Favre, and as of right now, I REALLY believe that we can give the Patriots a run for their money in the AFC East! Call me crazy. -On offense... It all starts up front and I really like what I see on paper. The addition of Alan Faneca was huge and in my eyes, as a football fan, as a fan of the trenches, it's genius. With Ferguson, Faneca and Mangold... This Jets offensive line could be one of the very best in all of Football. We have Ferguson who will be protecting Favre's blind side out of the LT position. Ferguson has had his fare share of rookie mistakes as well as his fare share of bumps in the road during his 2 year career but I honestly believe that he's a potential franchise LT type of talent and with the addition of Faneca, Ferguson should really start to come into his own here in 2008. We have Faneca who can protect the QB but at the same time, he has always been known as one of the best run blocking LG's to ever play the game, and All I can say is this... I'm excited that the Jets went after this guy during the offseason. Mangold is already one of the best centers in the game in my eyes and once again... With the addition of Faneca, I think the Jets run game and pass protections can be elite! Woody is a HUGE upgrade over Clement because Clement was honestly one of the worst RT's I have ever seen and in my eyes, he was a 3rd stringer playing the role of a starting RT. If Woody can hold his own, I really believe that this offensive line can be our biggest support for the offense because Moore has always been a solid RG in my eyes, I believe Moore was the starting RG the year that Curtis Martin led the league in Rushing yards. It all starts up front and the Jets are looking pretty tough as of right now. -Playmakers-Now that we have Bret Favre leading the way, with a solid offensive line... I'm realling starting to get excited about the players we have on the Offense-Real excited! Thomas Jones and Leon Washington can be on of the Better 1-2 Punches in the league. Thomas Jones could rush for over 1400 yards this year and Leon Washington can be the X-Factor after Jones pounds the ball during the games. Washington can turn nothing into something on any play, something like a playmaker. The man can catch out of the backfield, take a simple screen pass to the house, hit the outside on a hand off and overall... I believe that Leon Washington is one of the more explosive types of backs in the league! Thunder and Lightning baby. Coles, Cotchery and Brad Smith can REALLY give opposing secondarys a nightmare this year! Coles has always been an explosive type of WR with (Pennington as the Jets QB) A QB who could NEVER stretch the field... Now we have Favre throwing to Coles... A WR with amazing hands, makes the tough catch, really good speed and for the 1st time, as Jet fans... We really have a chance to see what Coles is about, and I have a feeling more fans around the league will be taking note and trying to add Coles to their fantasy football team here in 08. If you ask me... Coles is more of an elite WR when talking about Donald Driver. We also have Cotchery, a player who broke all of T.Holt's records while playing with NC State, a player who has been a beast with Pennington and Clemens as our #2 WR, now we have Bret Favre as the gun slinger and I look for Cotchery to have his BEST year as a Jet in 08, thats scary. And Brad Smith has the size, speed, quickness and talent to be a dangerous slot WR, lets just wait and see but who knows? Maybe this kid can have a breakout year with Favre at the helm. And how could I forget Baker? Favre loves the Tight end and I'm confident as a Jets fan the Baker and Dustin Keller(I love what I have seen) I'm confident that the Jets TE's can hold their own on Sundays. Offensive players to watch= Thomas Jones and Brad Smith. Thomas Jones NOW has the offensive line to rush for over 100 yards per game and Brad Smith has the tools to be a really good Slot Wr. If Brad Smith can have a breakout year with Favre as the QB, watch out NFL because the Jets may be flying high here in 2008! On defense I REALLY love what I see on paper and our starting D has looked tough during the preseason if you ask me. The defense is something that I have been excited about all offseason and the additions of Jenkins, Gholston, and Pace could really put this Jets D over the top. We have one of the best safetys in all of football in Kerry Rhodes, a player who can ball hawk, make things happen and control the secondary for years to come. We may not have a shut down CB but Revis is as close to a young lock down CB as I have ever seen. Elam and Miller are question marks but this Jets secondary has some solid players and if Rhodes and Revis can stay healthy, watch out, because these guys can play. The Linebackers are what have me really pumped up! Gholston and Pace can BOTH pressure the opposing QB, they can both make plays out of the backfield and they can both tackle in the open field. With David Harris and Barton in the Middle of this 3-4 Defense, watch out because these guys can win a lot of games for this Jets team of 08. We have one of the best inside LB's in David Harris, we have a S.Merriman-D.Ware type of OLB in Gholston, a player who is really explosive with all the talent in the world and we have tough LB's in Barton and Pace who play hard on every snap. Bryan Thomas is one of the better BACKUPS if you ask me. Mangini and the Jets can also run the 4-3 @ times with Gholston and Bryan Thomas as the two DE's with Pace-Harris and Ellis/Barton on the outsides with Jenkins and Pouha in the middle. Coleman, Jenkins and Ellis can also be a solid 1-3 punch in the trenches for this Jets 3-4 Defense... If our LB's can pressure the QB... Watch out, because this Jets defense can be 4-real this year. I can go on and on... Sorry I posted such a long thread, I just cant stop thinking about the team and players we have on this team...Watch out NE, here come the Jets led by Favre and a young, fast, talented and explosive D.
Nice post TB! Don't see Thomas Jones having a big year but I can definetly see us challenge for the division. I can't wait to see our starting D on the field together for the first time.
I dont think we are better then the Pats. With that said though you dont neccesarilly have to be better then someone to beat them out. I dont think they will win this division but I could see them winning 12 games (not saying they will but its a possibility). The question then would be will the Pats win more then that. I think they will but anything is possible.
we havnt won more then 10 games in so long i would love to be able to this year. i think we really have a shot to do so this season looking at the teams we play and how much better we are this year. i dont believe jones is going to do all that much this year infact i dont even think he is our starter come end of the season. but hey if all does go wrong this year at least we will get a year of chemistry with this team and draft moreno to replace jones. i played against him in high school and he is a beast
Better then the Pats is a strech... but is it so far fetched? I can't say. Offensively, based on last year, the edge still has to go to the Patriots. Defensively? I think it's a wash. Heck, the jets may have the advantage. The one weakness I saw in the pats all last year was there D. They could be ran on. They could be thrown on. Sure, they were ranked high, but when the offense can score 40 in a half... the D has to just step on the field. This year could be different. Stallworth wasn't much last season. but it allowed That little guy a lot of freedom in the slot position. Now, without Stallworth, Welker wont have such a easy time getting those grabs. Plus, I see a lot of blitzing coming at the pats ALL YEAR. THats how they lost the super bowl, pressure Brady - he couldn't handle it. One thing I have always noted about Brady, and Peyton, is they can't handle pressure in there faces. Favre can, and has, and continued to do so last season. Still, with no pressure, they are lethal. It's a interesting argument, and we'll see soon enough. If the jets can go "undefeated" into the first NE game... you wil l have to start to wonder.
I just cant see the Patriots defense being the same without A.Samuels and R.Colvin... John Lynch? Wow... Talk about a player on the decline who lacks the top speed to be an elite safety. Am I saying the Jets are better? No way, but I feel the Jets have a stronger team than last year and the Patriots have taken a step back. I'm wishing for a SB Hangover for the patriots players I would go with an 11-5 and maybe a 1998 12-4 type of season
things change so much in the NFL from one year to the next. an injury to a key player or two for NE and the division would then be wide open.
ummm, you mean mr all time leader(favre) in interceptions handle pressure better than the two best qb's in the game? lol lol lol only a packer fanatic could come up with that qoute...... crack pipe
eh, to his defense, Manning complained about "protection problems" against the Steelers in 06, and Brady ate balls in the SB. I haven't seen as many Favre games as he has, but maybe there is something about that.
Until we can run the ball, we ain't winnin sh!t. Until we can defend the run consistently, we ain't winnin sh!t. Close those two glaring holes, and we might stand a chance. I still don't think TJ is the answer in the backfield.
Why not, after a may be 1-2 start I see an open race for the AFC East title, if that, what NE's D showed in the preseason was for real... All this barring injuries... TJ will lose the starting job, if the Jets go to a more pass oriented offense, Washington is the better option. It's time the season starts...
Chatman could battle TJ for the starting spot the way he is running. Chatman is a man who not only wants to cement a roster spot, but show the world he is better than anyone thinks. Its good to have depth players like that on the team.
