I only quoted the numbers for teams above .500, so these are not bad young teams. The Marlins might have shot their wad, but Arizona is the team that has really been impressive, given that they're one of the youngest teams in baseball. As 3rd says, A Reyes is nothing special, and it's hard to believe at this point that Evans will hit well enough to be a starting first baseman or corner outfielder in the major leagues (he's doing great against lefties, so maybe as part of a platoon he would be effective). Murphy has been very impressive, and hopefully Martinez turns out to be for real.

Delgado is making it very difficult to not pick up his $12 million option for next year, which could be a good or bad thing. As I said in another thread, I hope Murphy is sent to winter ball to learn how to play second, since Wright/Reyes/Murphy could be a tremendous infield for a long time (adding in a good first baseman).

If the Mets keep Evans on the team as a platoon/bench guy next year it's probably the kiss of death for him. He'll only be 23 next year and if they would have him hang around the majors as a righty bat off the bench and spot starter against lefties rather then playing every day in the minors then they obviously don't expect a whole lot from him.

As far as Delgado, despite his big hit and big errors last night against the Braves, before the scorer aided 5-5 last night his numbers for August were right in line with what he was doing in May and June this year. The superhuman month was nice but I wouldn't let that could the fact that he's not going to be the hitter he was. I think they still have to go after Teixeira.

Teixeira is clearly a step up from Delgado, but he will be a hot commodity, with at least two other rich teams (the Angels and the Yankees) going after him. The problem is that if the Mets don't pick up Delgado's option they could suddenly find themselves with nobody.

Do you think Delgado would be that hot of a commodity though? They risk alienating him I guess if they buy him out but even if everything else fell through they could probably go back to him as a fallback option.

Omar Minaya, when a super-scout, probably signed a 100 guys who made it to the major leagues. He insists that Nick Evans is going to be a 20hr/80rbi/280avg. hitter. Not superstar. But every team needs one of them. Evans does not have both feet on the ground, figurately, yet. But I am a big minor league blog follower, and scouts insist he has Mike Piazza power to right center.
