I don't know about you guy's, but i have'nt liked what i've seen from our defense in the preseason. I'm still seeing the same problems from our line, letting guys run right up the gut, for big chunks of yardage.Different players, same results. With the old adage of "offense puts asses in the seats, but defense wins championships", this team has'nt got a snowballs chance in hell, of doing anything close to winning a championship. Your Thoughts:
Our starting D looked much better against the run against the 'skins IMO. They did not get much of anything up the middle while Jenkins was in. There were 2 runs off left tackle that went for 16 & 10 yards that boosted their numbers up, and on one of those gholston was held pretty bad by Samuels which prevented him from stopping the play at the LOS. Obviously you cannot just discount those two runs, but in general our run defense looked much better than last year with the starters in. Last year as you mentioned, teams would consistently gash the middle for 4+ yards and pickup first down after first down. Aside from the two 10+ yard gains I don't think they had a single run greater than 3 yards against the starters. I am a little concerned that the second and third stringers continue to look real bad against the run. Hopefully we don't have to see much of them though. I'm also concerned about Jenkins' endurance because when he's not in the middle softens up quite a bit.
What are U talking about since some on this board have said Kenyon Coleman has been doing a top of the line job? The newspaper reports on Jenkins have been glowing to say the least. H'mm maybe the tale of the tape is the almost 100 yards our 1st stringers gave up to Wash last week with most of that yardage given up to KC side of the field
I don't think they've looked very good. Teams have been marching up and down the field against us for most of this decade.
We have a good test on both sides of the line this week against the Giants with the starters getting extended playing time. We probably won't face a better OL and DL from one team the entire season. I expect us to be substantially better against the run especially between the tackles where we got gashed the last few years. My biggest concern is containment outside and a pass rush. This is the NFL teams are going to make big plays and score points against very good defensive teams. To me the biggest thing is if we can finally move from a bend don't break D to a D that can actually attack Offenses and get our share of 3 and outs and some turnovers, two areas we were horrible at last year.
I don't know about 40 years. The Sack Exchange era defense was good enough to win a Super Bowl, so probably was the 1998 team. Aside from that we've never really had anything close to a dominant defense, no coincidence that the two times we did we went to the AFC Championship Game.
Hoopla hah I was in the food court at the mall the other day & I was wearing a NYJ T-shirt & some lady come up to me & tells me she to is rooting for the NYJs. So I asked is she a fan of the NYJs & she said no BUT I am a Favre fan & I hope he wins it all. So maybe Favre is making us America team replacing the Boys. FYG in the 2 years I am in Texas & have been wearing NYJ gear that is the 1st time anybody ever commented to me on the NYJ gear
I am not worried. Harris has seen virtuly no action and the unit is still gelling. It is a process. One that I think will carry into the season. I do expect that we will be ready to play for the opening of the season though, but I think we will get a lot better as the season progresses. The Giants D didn't have a whirlwind start last year and look what happened. Let's have faith. We are still in pre-season with 2 games left to play. I am confident things will come around.
I'm worried about the run D as usual. I always will be until they prove they can stop anybody in any game even once. Hell, Thomas Jones would run for 150 yards against our defense.
I don't buy the whole "gelling" thing....they better get their act together pretty soon......and yeah i'm worried about the D. Their much better on paper, that better translate to being better on the field........if the D struggles it will be time to start questioning Mangini''s defensive philosophy and personnel choices
He's looked very impressive so far. I love the fact that he's always studying film. It tells me he understands what it's going to take to be sucessful in the NFL.
I don't think pass defense is a problem. I think we will even be able to get a little more pressure on the QB this year but so far I have seen nothing to think our run D is any better. I saw Jenkins on his butt more last week that anywhere else.
The problem is a pass rush can not help Miller if he has to cover a fade to the end zone. When that happens he uses defensive pass interfearence as his first line of defense because his cover skills are so bad.
If we want to beat NE, Cin and even a team like Arizona we are going to need more than good DB play we need to establish a serious pass rush.
