No this schtick of yours is getting tiring. The starting lineup was in for 2 series. It is the damn preseason, it means shit and tells you less about the regular season. The overreaction on this board is disturbing. I will say it again, IT IS PRESEASON! How about some perspective.
Don .. I'm with you .. I saw a draw on 3rd and forever, no problem.. first down .. I hope it stays like this for week 2 .. POW ..
Pittsburgh has been notoriously bad at running a 3-4 as well. Bill Parcells has made a disaster out of the scheme every where he has gone. Its also run in San Fran and Cleveland. Bringing the total to about 8 teams, or 25% of the league. Yea, I guess its the scheme's fault we could not contain shit on the edges last night.
We had for more success last season when we played in a 4-3. Towards the end of the season, it was a 50/50 split in terms of our defensive scheme. It doesn't mean much when you keep saying something's better, yet the results are always the same: poor. The proof's in the pudding.
What does that even mean? What defense do the most successful teams in the league employ? I would say it is spread pretty evenly over the different defensive alignments. To say that the 3-4 sucks when playoff/championship defenses like Dallas and NE employ it, is ridiculous.
If there is anything to be worried about right now, it isn't the run defense, it is the coaching. -Gholston playing totally out of position - this is not going got help him develop. -A talented defense that plays conservative and doesn't blitz. What gives? Does anyone really think they are hiding something for the regular season? -Trying to send the game into overtime in the preseason. Why not give Ratliff an opportunity to pull out a win, see if he can handle it pretending they were down by 4? The loss means nothing but the coaching I've seen looks awful.
I'll concede your third point. Gholston is a 3-4 OLB. He's not out of position, but looks stiff during coverage right now and is not getting good containment on runs or pressure on the QB. Still its only preseason. He is far too small to play DE in the 3-4. All D's play conservitive in the preseason. Very little blitzing and no interesting packages. This happens across the league. Nothing new here.
That isn't what I saw out of the San Fran and Seattle games. One of the great NFL coaches, Vince Lombardi, taught that execution would lead to victory. If the Jets were to work on the things in the preseason games (and camp though I don't go so I honestly don't know) that they're going to do in the regular season, it doesn't matter whether or not other teams know its coming, because they won't be able to stop it.
Fire Bob Sutton......Bob Sutton doesn't tackle. Jets signed Jenkins, but there DE's are 2 small & 2 weak. Its called a front 3, not a front 1 (Jenkins). Jets didn't draft or sign any DE's for there 3-4 defense, so you're basically gonna see the same play as last year with there undersized DE's. Jets' need to get bigger upfront & I believe that gonna take Pouha starting next to Jenkins & another DE (don't know who) as the 3rd piece upfront. This leaves the depth very shallow. Thats why I was so pissed that that the Jets' wasted there 5th round pick on Ainge....when that DT from Iowa St. (Rubin) was still on the board. Jets' need to get bigger, younger & add better quality depth upfront & actually on both lines O & D. Jets' coulda even taken OL or any other position over Ainge...that was just a b.s. pick. Jets need more speed at OLB & more size at ILB...They really need to find another David Harris. Losing Hobson was a mistake. He woulda fit in great at ILB.
Its not necessarily a scheme issue.....Jets LB's need more speed & closing speed on ball carriers. I believe its more a talent issue.
While the first team only gave up 42 yards, it was in only 2 series. Multiply that out for an entire game and that's a hell of a lot of yards given up. And our 2nd and 3rd teams didn't do any better. So I don't think there's any evidence that the team has gotten any better than last year at rush defense. And that's a problem since we were in the bottom of the league for several defense categories.
