Wow preseason and he goes for OT with 5 seconds and 2 downs left? Use that chance to give our young guys an opportunity to score under pressure. Who in their right mind wants to play extra time in preseason anyway? By the way, if I'm coach I'm bringing in a kicker tonight. Someone needs to light a fire under Nugent's ass. Seriously.
How bout to see if nugent can make a kick in a high pressure situation? Which what do you know, it seems he can't all of a sudden. Hopefully it was just a fluke thing. I don't mind the call, we took 2 shots at the endzone. Raymond had the game winner and dropped it, no need to try again if he couldn't catch that one.
Agree with Nuge, he needs some competition. But I agree with Mangini's decision. He probably wanted the extra OT snaps for evaluation. Plus that's the decision he would make in the regular season so its no big deal. Nugent just flat out choked.
My only devils advocate is that he wanted OT to see more of the reserve players, but there is no excuse for Nuge missing the gimme. This move will get attacked in the papers tomorrow.
Coaches always coach to win, even in the preseason. And I happen to think the same way. If they are keeping score, I want to win. The bottom line is that 5 seconds is not considered enough time to garauntee getting another play after 3rd down. Nugent is an asshole for missing a 23 yard kick. You should want to kick him in the nuts. Not Mangini.
its a preseason game who cares im more concerned tho with the 2 missed kicks by nugent if i were mangini id sign another kicker just to put pressure on nugent to improve, too much is invested in this season for it to be derailed by a kicker (hello doug brien)
CO-SIGN Nugent is going to be one everyone's shit list until he makes some big kicks in the regular season.
Yeah, the game is not a big deal at all. I'm just a little worried to see Nugent miss 2 kicks in a game, one of them being a fucking 23 yarder with the game on the line.
Mangini did mention in the post game press conference that he was going to allow Ainge to play. I was kind of frustrated at his choice to go for the fg until I heard that.
I posted this in the game thread but it seems appropriate here. It is the friggin pre-season. Who cares if we win. What did we learn tonight? 1) Favre can run this offense. He looks to have a great relationship with all the receivers. 2) The Oline has GREAT chemistry and should be greatly improved. Amazing protection. 3) Ratliff and Clowney look to be the real deal. 4) Starting defensive unit kicks serious ass. Negatives: 1) A fifth-sixth string WR can't catch. Who the fuck cares, cut his ass. 2) Mangini tested Nugent by putting him in a high pressure situation. And he choked. Lets see how he reacts from this point on. All-in-all great production from a preseason game and there is ALOT to be excited about this season. So get a damn grip.
He didnt want to play OT -- but he uses pre season to prepare. In a real game you bring in the FG unit to tie the game. Made total sense.
I do agree with you, and said some similar things to my buddy on the phone after the game. Winning a preseason game means nothing. Exposing our guys to more time (e.g. potential injury) and wasting a great practice opportunity is what pissed me off. I just hope Mangini finds his common sense in the regular season. I also agree that the endzone drop was meaningless. As I told my friend, relax, he won't be on the team come the regular season.
