I said this last year too. It seems TJ has somewhat poor vision. Last year he was constantly running into the sides of the holes, running into his blockers or hell into the other team. This year I said his eyesight wouldn't matter so much running behind richardson through holes set by mangold/faneca/brick. Well, it still looks to be an issue. Even though the holes were bigger, he still seemed to go the wrong way all the time. I realize this was the first pre but I am somewhat concerned. Your thoughts?
I totally agree. last year he should've had abetter statistical year but would not hit the open holes. This I hope gets rectified.
I honestly got no idea what you guys are talking about. Jones is running where he?s supposed to run. With the regular sideline-cam, you don?t see anything when it comes to running between the Tackles. You would need a Endzone-cam to really jude these thing. 3.6 yards behind that O-Line say his vision is good.
I watch the home games in person and sometimes a game in Buffalo. I still feel he has poor vision. Stats aside, he doesn't hit the holes correctly/precisely. In Chi-town, he had HUGE holes, the man that needed a forklift to get out of his house could fit through them. Even in the open field, he just doesn't have quality vision or maybe its intuition... Maybe it will get better but, you just see it.
If you are implying that we actually had running holes to run through last time, i think you have some bad eyesight. Most of the time jones would run, he would see the other teams linebackers and linemen waiting for them with a cocktail in their hands.
Two years ago, Jones had over a 4.0 carrying average in Chicago. Last year, behind the same Oline, Benson had something like a 3.2 carrying average
This is CLEARLY not what I'm saying. From 1 year (with Kendall) to the next (sans Kendall) our o-line blew chunks. I get this. Like I said, its early, we'll see but I think he has some vision issues. I sure hope he proves me wrong.
No, I hear you. It's true, it's hard to tell sometimes, but there was a wide run last night where Richardson took the outside, there seemed to be plenty of room and everyone was blocked up, but Jones took it inside - I don't think its vision per se as much as instincts. I just don't think he's very good a t knowing where to run. He'll get what's there, but he won't create.
What do you Jets fans think of Leon Washington? I heard he's really pushing TJ hard. Didn't get to see game last night although I did see the highlights. That Clowney dude was just off the freakin' chain last night.
Ya know, he did pretty well behind a crappy OL, but i think part of the problem he may have had is that the Jets CS told him to hit the hole fast, and tried to break him of his habit of dancing around a little behind the LOS as he used to do in chicago. The consequence of that is what the OP referred to.
One of the weakest? Are you kidding me? Thomas Jones had over 1,100 yards last season running behind the worst offensive line in the NFL. Give me a break man! You guys are clueless!!
BINGO! These guys have no clue what they are talking about. Jones had over 1,100 yards last season with our horrible, horrible offensive line. Thomas Jones is beast and hes going to show it this season.
Leon's probably not of the right build to be an every down back, but he's definitely going to push the split for carries closer to 50/50. He's an elusive little guy and with the new OL opening actual holes that he can breathe through, he'll be a huge threat every time he touches the ball.
Leon > Jones. Jones is not FAST enough to hit the hole. And I agree that he often goes to the wrong spot. I really think Leon should be given a shot, he's the same size as Westbrook for crying out loud and I think if he gets to the weight room like Westbrook did, he can be as good.
Yeah, we kind of got a little situation of our own. We just signed Turner from the Chargers, I like his build and the way he runs roughshot through the middle and invites contact, but being a second stringer throughout his career, I have to wonder if he's going to be durable enough to handle an every down load. On the other hand, we have this guy, Jerious Norwood who runs like an antelope and can flat out juke any DBs in the league out of their shoes. He's never been used as an every down back, but last year in spot duty, he had a 6+/yrds per rush avg. We got him in the same draft that the Saints drafted Reggie 'Bust' and Norwood's been a real exciting 'sleeper' back that can come in late in the 3rd quarter and just show so much speed that defenses just sit there in awe and just say 'fuggit'.....
To tell you the truth i agrued with my friends all the time about this situation he never really seemed to be the right fit for the jets and there style of running.. Curtis Martin though not the fastest Back still had vision to get open and make a screen play happen with percision so they need to handle the situation. TJ may not be the permenant answer ..
The permanent answer went to the Raiders and is having a magnificent camp. We will rue that day for years to come.
