August 2, 2008 Go Green! Chad's team tops Clemens & Co. As the clock expired, Jets players poured Gatorade on their head coach and cheered wildly. Chants of ?J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets,? rang through the stadium. Was it a dream? No, just a scrimmage. The head coach, in this case, was running backs coach Jimmy Raye, and the chants were pre-recorded and blaring through speakers. The Green team had defeated the White team, 10-7, in the annual public scrimmage at Hofstra University. Raye led Chad Pennington?s Green to victory over Kellen Clemens? White, led by defensive coordinator Bob Sutton. The game offered the two quarterbacks a chance to compete head to head. The afternoon ended in a virtual draw, though Clemens was hardly efficient: Pennington completed eight of 14 passes for 115 yards; Clemens was 8-for-22, for 137 yards (Eric Mangini blamed several of Clemens? incomplete passes on drops by receivers). Both QBs contributed a touchdown, and neither threw an interception. Clemens seems to be closing the gap with Pennington after tossing six interceptions during his first week at training camp. As expected, neither Mangini, Clemens or Pennington offered much insight into the state of the QB race, though Pennington allowed that he was angry at himself for an incomplete pass to TE Bubba Franks in the fourth quarter. ?I tried to stick it on him, and he ran such a great route,? Pennington said. Mangini said that he would know more about how the game went after watching tape. The game featured a weather delay that wiped out the final 5:24 of the second quarter. When the players returned to the field, they simply began the second half. After the Green victory, a controversy erupted - Mangini, who usually lifts the winning team?s curfew, decided that he was happy enough with both sides to allow everyone to stay out. ?It was extremely controversial, from a Green perspective,? Mangini said, smiling. Be careful, Hempstead - the Jets will be on the town tonight. *** In other news, TE Dustin Keller, who caught a Clemens pass for a 55-yard touchdown, seemed to be limping in the fourth quarter. Keller had a wrap around his left ankle after the game, but said he was fine. Pennington was complimentary: ?He?s an exciting young player?ever since he was drafted, he?s done an excellent job.? - By Andy Martino
Great report. Thanks for the info. Man Clemens & Pennington sounded very confident out there today. This is going to be a tough decision for Mangini. But we will wait and see what happens. :jets:
This means nothing. It's not even an exhibition game. We got a long way to go on this. Everything else is just tea leaf reading.
anybody know how it was broken down? player wise I mean? was the "starting" offense in green, and the starting defense in white? and ssecond team offense was in green and second team d in white? or was it just mix and match by Mangini?
One of the articles indicated that raye and sutton drafted players and then conducted some trades and mangini made some swaps
Yeah, this was roughly the breakdown, so KC was working with the 2nd team offense against the 2nd team D. CP had the starting O vs. the starting D...more or less.
