Damien Moss? Who the hell is Damien Moss?! Actually pleased to see Hansen go. He's teased me long enough.

EDIT: Obviously Brandon Moss, I guess. Sloppy work Ken Rosenthal. . . .

You are correct. Pierre actually went on the DL for the first time in his career this year, but he's back and has been playing a lot. Without Furcal he's been needed at the top of the lineup, but he could be the odd man out. Pierre can't throw a shadow and Manny plays no defense at all, only one can be in LF and it will be Manny. Jones is having a bad year and he was hurt for a while too, but he's great in CF and starting to hit, so he'll probably stay in unless he just never gets his bat going. Kemp and Ethier have been the best OFs (hitting and defense) all season, so Torre needs to find a way to keep them in the lineup.

If LaRoche is in the deal, that's fine. He wasn't a factor all year when we've needed a 3B, and now that we have Casey Blake he serves no purpose.

So Manny + Moss + Hansen + $7M for Jason Bay?

He must have been some headache for Boston to do that deal.

Jones is starting to hit? Really? The guy has been the worst player in baseball this year is he still even getting ABs?

I like the deal. Bay is about as close to equal value to Manny as you can get, he's a margainally worse hitter and a somewhat better fielder, more importantly he is grossly underpaid. 7.5 mil next year, add in the 7 going to LA and it;s what, 14.5 for a full year of Bay? That's below market value. Hansen and Moss don't have a significant future with the Sox. Plus you still get the same 2 picks if Bay leaves after 2009. which lines you up nicely to make a run at Matt Holliday or some other FA.

Edit- Rob Neyer agrees with me.

I figured that. But when Rosenthal initially wrote Damien Moss, I started combing through soxprospects.com, figuring he was some single or double A kid. I liked Brandon Moss, but this was a decent trade.

. . . and, yes, Manny HAD to go. This from a guy who, just one week ago, didn't think I'd ever be saying that. He was shooting his way out of town, and there was no solution until November.

Great deal for Dodgers and Sox but of course not so much for Pirates. LaRoche is a nice player but he is never going to live up to the hype. This guy was at one time the Dodgers top prospect but has been passed by alot of guys. He is injured quite a bit and I don't know much about Morris is in Low A but he looks like he has some potential.

Hansen sucks... and Moss is a MLB ready OF with some power and about .275 hitter

Wow, its possible that the Yankees are the Trade deadline winners and the Red Sox are the losers. Nice!

The past few weeks he's back in the lineup off the DL and getting ABs. By "starting to hit" I mean he's having better ABs now and making better contact, although it hasn't led to a hot streak of any kind yet. That's why I wouldn't rule out him sitting now that we have Manny, but with Manny in LF we almost need Jones in CF to cover the ground. He's getting booed when he comes up at Dodger Stadium now. I was there for two games a few weeks ago and they were doing it then, they still are.

It seems weird that the Dodgers would just have to give up Laroche & Morris while the Pirates wanted Hermida, Tucker, AND Stanton from the Marlins. I'm shocked the Dodgers didn't have to give up Kemp or Ethier. Anyway, the Dodgers now have one stacked OF with Manny, Jones, Pierre, Kemp, and Ethier.

The Morris kid apparently is coming off Tommy John surgery and is in Low A so of course Pirates get a guy who won't make the majors. Wow who would have thought 3 teams would have ripped off the Pirates in a week.

Manny is still a great player. He is still a clutch player. People who are saying Bay is just as good, are clearly wrong.

The Pirates are always very weird in their talent evaluation, perhaps they rate Moss higher than others. To be fair LaRoche is a big time prospect who is major league ready at a premium position, Moss and Hansen are also MLB ready and Morris is pretty far along. Stanton has big time potential, but he's an 18 year old in a low class A hitters league, he's several years away with a lot more risk. Still it comes down to either Moss being rated higher by them, or they still believe that Hansen is going to be a big time closer like people did when he was drafted.

edit- note on Morris, Sickels ranked him 13th, but noted that it was because of the TJ, otherwise he would have been a B/B+, which would have put him 5th in the Dodgers system. I have to assume based on the fact that he is back and not having any real problems that he has to be moving up, say top 10 in a pretty good farm system. Not a terrible return

Anyway, I just realized that the Laroche brothers are united in Pittsburgh.

    Manny .299 20 HR 68 RBI 66 Runs 1 SB .398 OBP .529 SLG
    Bay .282 22 HR 64 RBI 72 Runs 7 SB .375 OBP .519 SLG

Oh yea huge difference here  plus with Ortiz, it can only help Bay.

For the Red Sox, this wasn't a win or lose deal. It was necessary. Simple as that. He hired Boras with the specific intention to get a new deal, and he had to do everything possible to make sure the Red Sox wouldn't exercise their option. The Sox have been playing horrible ball, and need to do something.

Question for whoever knows - I'm assuming that when LA does not re-sign him that they also get the compensatory picks for him? That's the toughest part of this deal for Boston.

Part of the deal to get Manny to waive his 10-5 rights was almost certainly the removal of the 2 options, and an agreement from Manny not to accept arbitration ( not that he'd want to) so yes they'll get the type A picks for him, or course the Red Sox will probably get the same or better picks after next season if they don't resign BAy
