Stunning when I saw this... Getting a catcher who is batting .295? For Farnsworthless? Unreal. Thanks Detroit...I thought for sure a prospect would be included.
Not to mention that the guy they traded is probably the one I trust the LEAST out of the group in the pen, decent recent performance or no. Of all the other regular guys (Veras, Edwar, Robertson), Farnsworth was the first one I wanted gone.
Im trippin...Im doing cartwheels....Im jumping...Im rolling...this is cash money at his best! I want a gamebreaker on this team and pudge has proved it...he took a young marlins team on his 1 year deal to glory wowza what a steal baby...all we need now is 1 more pitcher and lets turn this shit around
I'm not even sure a pitcher is necessary. Kennedy or Aceves could fill in until Wang gets back. Pavano and Hughes are in the pipeline, too. Are any of them going to be awesome for the Yanks? Maybe not... but they might be better than Washburn. Doubtful they'd be much worse. And certainly better than Ponson and/or Rasner. Washburn would be an upgrade over Ponson/Rasner... but not worth the cost if Seattle's holding out for a top prospect. Stupid on their part. Who else is going to take on his salary? Someone should tell Pelekoudas how salary dumps work if he wants to get rid of Washburn. (My bet is he blinks first.)
Oh, ok? Who is the setup guy? Even Cashman says it's an unknown now but you have it figured out, right?
I was always kind of hoping Farnsworth would provoke a run at the mound so he might really fu*k somebody up.
Why have a guy titled "set-up" guy when you can just have an assortment of talented guys, and use whichever one you need depending on situation, who's hot, etc. Titles like "set-up" man are the reason guys like Farnsworth and Hawkins get trotted out in leverage roles when more talented, less proven players are in waiting.
It's an unknown not because there's no one good enough, but because there's multiple guys who have pitched well enough to warrant the position. Veras, Ramirez, and Marte are all better than Farnsworth.
I'd add Robertson to that list as well. He's been ridiculously dominant (and consistent) at all levels.
As is being stated, we have an abundance of pitching. That said, everyone knows I liked Farnsworth, and I kept saying he was going to come around at some point. Girardi did it for him. He's been very good lately. He just came off that streak where he threw 9 straight no-hit innings. That's pretty damned good if you ask me. As for Pudge, I'm pretty unhappy with the deal. Molina would trouble hitting the ball with a paddle, but there's no question this pitching staff has responded to him this year. The ERA is significantly lower when he catches, and the guy guns down a lot of would-be basestealers. Rodriguez brings a declining bat and a downgrade defensively to the team.
That "declining bat" has put up an OPS almost 200 points higher than Molina. (Remember the problem you said this team has with scoring runs?) And that's despite a slow start. And don't forget, Pudge is a 13 time Gold Glove winner. He's not what he once was, but he's still one of the best at stopping the running game. If there's an issue with him, it's his game calling. Not to mention that Molina is a mere ten games away (or so) from his career high in games caught.
That's all well and good. I still prefer Molina. Yes, I know I complain about the lack of runs scored, but that's more a finger pointed at the 1-6 spots in the lineup than it is 7, 8 and 9. I'm not saying Rodriguez is a bad player, I just don't think he was necessary. Plus, I really liked Farnsworth. I'm not getting all bent over it though.
I think he was...Molina can platoon with Pudge, and Moose seems to favor Molina, so he'll still get his days...But I don't want Chad Moeller being our backup. Pudge has World Series credentials, is in the final year of his deal then Jorge comes back...I like it. And it gets rid of Kyle.
