Mets contact Red Sox about Manny
    Posted: Tuesday July 29, 2008 06:17AM ET

Contrary to the denials that made the rounds Monday, officials from both teams say the Mets have contacted the Red Sox about Manny Ramirez and are interested in pursuing a deal for him if Boston decides to make him available. The Red Sox suspect that GM Omar Minaya wants Ramirez more than Mets ownership does. Regardless, the Mets are reluctant to part with top-prospect talent in exchange for outfielders like Adam Dunn, Raul Ibanez and Randy Winn, but they (rightly) consider Ramirez a far superior hitter to those in that group, and they would discuss players in a Ramirez deal that they would not discuss in others. What remains to be seen is whether a Ramirez deal is too complicated to come together in time for the deadline.

    Manny Ramirez 2007: .296/.388/.493
    Manny Ramirez 2008: .304/.400/.538

    Adam Dunn 2007: .264/.386/.554
    Adam Dunn 2008: .241/.386/.555

Doesn't look like all that much of a superior hitter to me. What else was it Omar didn't like about Dunn? Oh yeah his defense. Fair enough, Dunn was the 3rd worst defensive LF'er in the league last year. Who was the worst? Whoops, it's Manny and by a gigantic margin. And Manny's also 7 years older. But with Omar that is probably a point in his favor.

my problem with dunn isn't empirical, well part of it is, it's that he seems so willing to take a walk even in big situations, and he ks so much that in any important at bat it seems like he either ks or walks, not really what you want from your star hitter.

I'd prefer Dunn to Manny..... you also forget that Manny likes to beat up old men and has way too many issues for me to want him. Dunn plays every day and your right he is 7 years younger than Manny. Now you will get the strikeout issue with Dunn but I think the positives far outweigh the negatives. Oh and Dunn will cost much less than Manny but I guess $$$ isn't an issue for these guys. And if F Mart is traded for Manny I will flip my freaking lid. Newsflash Omar..... it's the bullpen that needs some serious fixing. I honestly believe we can get by with what we have but we have the same cast of losers in that pen that led to the collapse.

Of course we know if Omar gets his way Manny will be our left fielder within a few days.

i'm not a huge fan of getting Manny...... but the stats of Dunn versus Manny prove only one thing...that stats alone don't tell the whole story..Dunn shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence......I know I don't want Dunn anywhere near this team

Manny in his prime was a much better hitter then Dunn, sure. But Manny's 36 now. He's not going to be that .600+ slugging guy anymore. The strikeout thing is really overblown with Dunn. Dunn's got 105 K's in 419 PA. Manny has 85 in 424.

the money is only 4 mil apart, so 2 in the remaining time, and both would be free agents after the season so age isn't a concern

Another thought...Manny's antics made him lovable in Boston, But I think the NY media and fans would tear him up.

Why isn't age a concern? For what you'd have to give up to get either of these guys you'd want it to be more then a half a year rental.

This is of course the point - people are still thinking of the 1999-2006 Manny, when he was arguably the best hitter in baseball. He's not that player any more.

If Omar pushes to trade either F. Martinez or Niese for any half-year rental, Wilpon should fire him on the spot. And trading either for Manny should not even be a consideration.

I'd think whoever traded for these guys would have a leg up on everybody else on resigning them. I think we could get Dunn without giving up F Mart but we'd probably have to give up some of those young pitching prospects in Savanah. Maybe even our Catcher of the future in Pena.

You are like the only Mets fan I know that is in love with this guy. I don't get it. I see nothing in this guy but power, low average and 200 k's.

For what it's worth, I know he's only 18, but Pena has been terrible for the second straight year for Savannah.

What's not to like? He's got a better slugging % then anyone on the Mets and his OBP is a few points lower then only Wright. The guy is a monster.

I've read pretty much everywhere that the Mets aren't interested, even after the Red Sox called, so I think this is a moot point. That being said, I'd go for Manny for the right price. And I'm just not a Dunn guy, I can't do it.

Unfortunately, the Dusty Baker way of thinking has led people to believe a guy like Dunn isn't really really good... which he is.

he's very good, I just don't think he's a guy you pay a premium for a few months of, manny is. Dunn gives you a lot, but I wouldn't want to count on him in a tough spot, manny is still an amazing pure hitter, really the thing is he won't hit 40 Hrs a year anymore, if he still did his OPs would be over 1.000 again. Dunn has more power, but Manny is a superior hitter, and if the mets are going to trade for a guy to make a run with this year Manny is a far better option, then they are free to go after Dunn in the offseason, But manny is more likely to help them win it all this year, which would be the point of a trade here at the deadline.

edit- the point is that neither of these guys are signing an extension if they get dealt, the FA pool is shallow enough that they want to be FAs after the season so whoever rents them is doing just that, there is no incentive for either guy to sign an extension, especially not Dunn.

Ryan Howard also fits your description, and I wouldn't mind having either player.

I've mulled this one over, and I'm going with Dunn actually. We're not getting either though, so this is a moot point.

You forgot about the home runs. He also hits gigantic, holy-fucking-shit-look-at-that-sonofabitch-go home runs. Don't forgot those.
