Baker is not an "exceptional" player. Baker is average. A decent blocker, a decent receiver. Nothing more, nothing less. He deserves to have his ass sat on the bench for being stupid about how he has handled himself this offseason. Hopefully he finds himself playing somewhere else soon.
Talk about hitting the nail right on the head. This sums up Baker the average player and classless jackass in one post. Thank you.
Don't blame anything you read on the board for causing your retardation. You were like that before reading anything here. I lost count of the number of spelling and grammatical errors in your postings. And I don't consider spelling and grammar my strong suit. v Sayed really? Sayed? v ^there is a saying about casting stones; you should check that one out.
Consensus on the board is Baker is average at best. Yes, he would be able to contribute and add some value. Yes, most of us actually rooted for and like Baker. Yes, we all whish there wasn’t a contract dispute, he was happy and reporting to camp. Yes, at times he can make unexpected catches and give 100%. So do the guys on the practice squad. He has not done enough to justify his position of deserving a change to his contract. Don't let your home town homer perspective blind you; he is not as good as you are making him out to be. We ranked TEs that are better than him and his is in the bottom 1/3. He tested the market and didn’t get so much as a nibble. Now he is asking more from the only team interested in his service. Too bad, so sad; we all think we’re underpaid. Get back to work and park where you are supposed to park.
Franks is 1 year older than Baker and has already been to 2-3 probowls. He's had some nagging injuries the past 2 seasons, but I'm sure he passed a physical before we signed him. Franks is a better blocker than Baker. That is not even a discussion. Keller's blocking skills are highly underrated. For example: That's 2002 pre-draft analysis for Chris Baker. So lets see, Keller is the same size as Baker, had the same pre-draft blocking questions as Baker, is fast with good hands, runs excellent routes, and can get separation. Yeah, we're sure screwed if we lose Baker.
 Thanks. It was a pain in the ass finding pre-draft analysis for the 2002 draft. I just cannot believe people will defend somebody so stead-fastly when reality is a google away.
It's like the end of a bad relationship, even though it sucks you still remember only the good times and don't want it to end. People remember the great catches he made, and yes there were a few, but if you look at the entire picture he's just not an elite or even very good TE. He works hard and does what he can, but that doesn't mean he's stellar.
Yeah, I would have loved to keep him as the #2 TE while Keller got up to speed. I can also understand his frustration when we signed Franks. He knows as well as we do that Franks is an upgrade when healthy.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2008/06/jets_pick_up_another_tight_end.html "Baker was fined $3,000 for missing a treatment session on his back. He tweaked his back while warming up for his second practice and spent the remainder of camp on the exercise bike." He's claiming injury, refusing treatment sessions, not practicing. I don't see much the union would be able to do.
Agreed 1000%. Thanks for stepping into the argument and ending it. You saved me typing and thinking time, and left fewer holes than I would have by doing research on Baker's history. Good Job sir, Beer on me
read a page and a half, didnt bother with the rest as this is just one of those typical gang green hate threads. i really dont understand how some people can have so much disdain for someone especially someone who has done well for them but hey there is no convincing you guys at this point. then again you all have keller to woo over and run your fingers through your hair every time you read his name. and what exactly has he done for the jets? oh yeah thats right absofreakinlutely nothing. but continue your man love for him until he proves himself.
dude, this ain't rocket science. it's not like the disdain came from nowhere, in which we all woke up one day and said, "hey let's toast some Haterade to Chris Baker." he brought this on himself.
He lost a lot of supporters when he went public with all of this. He severely overrated himself and it's basically coming back to bite him in the ass. The final straw for me was when he parked his Bentley in the Team President's parking spot. A freaking Bentley. But yes, he's underpaid. He's going about this in the worst way possible and I hope he gets what he deserves...nothing. Greedy, selfish, sonofabitch.
Technically he is supposed to have failed his physical. nflplayers.com/USER/content.aspx?fmid=178&lmid=443&pid=1291 (Sorry, I couldn't link the site above, I don't have 50 posts yet.) Also worth noting is that once the Jets decided to go this route, this was the only time they could do it. Once a player has passed his physical and started training camp, you can't put him on PUP. Since Baker's back was 'hurt' and he couldn't practice, the Jets made the right move by calling his bluff and putting him on PUP - and also covering their butts just in case he did go out and hurt himself. The real benefit was from keeping him off the sidelines where all the reporters could gather around for a new quote every day, which would be a huge distraction. As an added bonus the team is within its rights to fine him for each day that he doesn't follow their prescribed rehab treatment plan for him, which will surely keep him away from those on field reporters (and the rest of the team) as much as possible.
I didn't even read past the first sentence of this post because I know it's just a bunch of board-stereotyping nonsense.
