Clemens had his chance last year and failed miserably. It's nice to want what you want but we don't have it anywhere in the organization. We should have made a deal for Flacco and didn't. Only time will tell (and it won't be long) whether or not that was a mistake.

I never said he would. My opinion is that he could make us a superbowl contender.

What the hell does that even mean?

So you're Nostradamas now. If Favre came to the Jets this is what would happen. OK.

But if we won a championship with him, you wouldn't be happy because he's not "our QB"?

Chad threw 2 TD's and 2 INT's in that game, I don't know where you came up with 4 first half TD passes. What is your point anyway? The Jets beat the Packers 2 years ago in Lambeau, therefore, Pennington is as good as Favre? Well done. I guess Rex Grossman and JP Losman are as good or better than Favre too because they crushed the Packers in 2006.

What about the time the Jets smoked the Colts in the playoffs? Pennington must be as good as Manning too. Come to think of it, you're right, I'm delusional. Favre (all time INT leader) is over rated and Pennington (7th all time passer rating) is the man. What was I thinking? Thanks for showing me the light.

I agree, the 3 quarters he played he looked dynamite. He's def the real deal.

Ignore the fact that KC had a swiss cheese o-line and Rodgers had a team that went 13-3 in the regular season

Rodgers played lights out in a game against, at the time, the 2nd best team in football. Yeah, it's just one game, but at the same time when you look at the way he handled himself in that game, the praise for him coming out of Cal, and the fact that he's had the luxury of sitting and learning for an extended period of time, he's a very intriguing package. Not to mention better physically than KC.

Clemens on the other hand is someone we've seen play for the majority of a season, and I can't point to a single time where I said he was going to be anything above mediocre. Rodgers threw 26 passes in that Cowboys game and he had more signature plays than KC did in 10 games. Jabba coined the term JAG for players like Clemens, Just Another Guy. I'm not saying that Clemens is a terrible player, but I was just waiting to see if there was something, anything special about him and I just flat didn't see it. A lot of young QBs have had rough seasons with bad teams, but the good ones can at least show some flashes.

I wasn't overly impressed with Clemens but I did see some glimpses that maybe you missed. He was rocked and didn't put the ball on the turf. He also showed a lightning quick release one of the best in the entire league along with a very live arm that generates nice velocity out of that compact quick release. That's a skill that can translate to devestation of any NFL D when coupled with experience, pocket presence and accuracy. His foot work stunk but if he gets it corrected and gets more comfortable behind a decent OL, he did show some great NFL skills.

Agree with many other posters. We've got to give KC a full offseason and a chance in '08 before we abandon ship. While his play has not been something to write home about, many QBs who are successful today had a rough start... just looking at playoff teams this year, look at some of their current QB's ratings their first year of significant action:
    Peyton Manning: 71.2
    Hasselbeck: 70.9
    E. Manning: 55.5
    V. Young: 66.7
    Garrard: 53.8

It is very hard to step into the NFL and light it up the first season you start. I'm not giving up on KC yet. Let's see what he's got next year, then we should decide. It is WAY too early to abandon ship right now. If teams quit on QBs after a rough first partial season, there would be very few QBs to actually make it.

I won't re-hash the plethora of other problems on offense that affected KC, but that needs to be part of the conversation, as well.

That's basically how I see it. The other big positive was that his INT percentage was only 4.0. That's not a good number by any means but it also is not the kind of number a young QB who cannot control his throws puts up.

Clemens will improve, but I don't know how much. I think Pennington could win the job because Mangini cannot afford another disaster of a season. If Clemens doesn't bring it early in camp and the first two preseason games, Pennington may be named the starter.

Disagree strongly with you on this. You can't judge a QB by a half of a season without an offensive line. The one game where the offensive line didn't lay a turd (the Steelers game) Clemens was exceptional. Clemens also didn't have the benefit of both Coles and Cotchery on the field most of the time he played, because they were both hurt for a lot of it.

Clemens mobility, release, and arm strength could turn out to be very nice if he is given a chance to develop the rest of the game.

Pennington is not the future of his team, nor is he the more dangerous QB on the team. In a primarily running offense like the Jets are built for this season, they'd best be served with Clemens playing a similar role to what Roethliesberger did in 2005 with the Steelers. He didn't get to throw often but when he did all he was expected to do was not make any horrendous decisions and to get the ball down the field. Clemens can do that, especially considering he actually has an offensive line now. And no, I'm not comparing Clemens to Roethliesberger.

My post was not about either QB's abilities or who I think should start (Clemens). Rather, I was writing about how going with Pennington is safe, whereas Clemens is still very unproven. I don't see how Mangini can survive another 4-12 season. At this point in time, Pennington is still a safer choice.

You base that on, Pennington's whopping 1 win last season? or the 100 ways he found to lose us games last year? Or his .500 record as a starter in the NFL?

I really shouldn't have to explain the post, but I will since you seem new to football.
Clemens has proven very, very little to this date. He may never pan out. Pennington has had success in this league. Pennington played poorly last year (just like Clemens). Some of the poor play can be attributed to the garbage offensive line.
Coaches on the hot seat tend to go with a proven QB over a completely unproven one. With a better line in front of him, there is a theory that Pennington could play well in 2008. Mangini knows what Pennington could do. There is no way for any of us to know if Clemens can leap up several steps to become an adequate starter immediately.

That said, I would prefer Clemens to get the starting job.

Last year was not Clemens chance to shine. It was his chance to get some playing time get his feet wet, so this year he will be ready from the get go. If you want to judge him on only 8 games, with that team, then go ahead but that's not fair and you are probably a Chad apoligist.

Please don't insinuate that I am new to football simply because I realize that Pennington sucks and has done so for quite some time.

Pennington has proven very little outside of one season in 2002. He hasn't been a productive QB since. All that has been proven is that you can win in spite of his lack of skill and production.

All Pennington has proven is that he is mediocre on his BEST day (sucks on the rest), cuts the playbook down due to his pathetic arm strength, can't beat a good defense, and can't take a team past the Divisional Round of the playoff. That is all that he has proven.

Mangini apparently knows of Pennington's mediocrity, because that's all the guy is at best, mediocre. Even though I think he is a bottom 5 QB in the league.

And if Pennignton was an adequate starter you would have a point, but a QB who limits the offense with pathetic arm strength, doesn't beat good defenses, is immobile, and leads unproductive offenses isn't adequate. Unfortunately for us, that is what Pennington is.

Clemens was better than Chad last year, and there is more to support the stance that Clemens will become adequate than Chad ever will considering that after 8 years Chad STILL isn't adequate.

This is becoming tiresome. I now realise I am dicussing with someone who is clearly a minor with lots of growing up to do.

Willie you are Jets fan I presume so I will cut you some slack. If Favre comes to the Jets, (ho ho, this was a non story from the first), and we won the SB, I would look you up and bye you a McDonalds happy meal and a coke. This Favre story is a big distraction to our pre season- move on. Bye the way look up the tape of Chad behind centre when we thrashed the pack, it was 4 touch down passes and he won the player of the week.
