We?re having an interesting conversation on a german site about this play. You think this should be 15 yards?
Yes, Tebow was clearing going out of bounds and the LSU player hit him and hit him low around the knees.
Disagree. A. He was still well in bounds. You're allowed to tackle players in bounds. B. If it was in the middle of the field, the low around the knees thing wouldn't be an issue at all. C. The guy plays for Florida State. You should be able use battleaxes with impunity against those guys.
No...the LSU guy pushed him OOB, but made the contact in bounds...it is Tebow's fault for not staying alert while he was in bounds.
No. He dove for Tebow while Tebow was still in bounds and he hit him in the ass/thigh region. It may have been a low hit but it didn't look like intent to injure, seems more like the refs treating the qb like a thin, glass plate. I could see a five yard penalty for going below the waist but definetly not a 15 yarder. If Tebow doesn't want to get hit he should RUN out of bounds instead of lightly JOGGING.
hell no. You are allowed to tackle the guy with the ball when they're in bounds right? End of story unless we're talking about flag football.
"Should" it be a penalty in the broad sense? Maybe not, but is that play a penalty based on the way the rules are understood today? Yes. Tebow was headed out of bounds, and had basically had given himself up, similar to if he were beginning his slide in the middle of the field.
What video are you guys watching? Tebow clearly gave up and was jogging out of bounds when the LSU player dove at his knee as he was going out of bounds.
On the field, in bounds, until the whistle, you are allowed to tackle the guy. Whether he starts walking or not. Why bother with a stripe, if you're somewhere near the sideline you can just come to a jog? Bullshit. Would you're answer be different if that was a RB instead of a QB?
He was on the line when he got hit and he had given himself up, this isn't even debateable. The officials got it right.
^ I don't know what video you're watching but the one I'm looking at the guy hits him just before he goes out of bounds. He is NOT touching the line when he starts to get hit.
I've never heard the rule explained that way. Running out of bounds is in no way the same as taking a slide as far as I know. Maybe I don't know the rule correctly, but I'd like to see it in writing if that's actually how it works.
I have no idea what the language of the rules might say, it's just based on what I've seen. As soon as a QB gives himself up it's almost understood that laying a hit on him is risking a penalty. In this case, if Highsmith just pushed Tebow out it probably would have been allowed, as we see that type of play a few times a game with mobile QBs. The fact that he went down low, combined with the fact that Tebow was giving himself up was the cause for the penalty. And yes, if Tebow were a RB, the answer would be completely different.
This doesn't sound like a rule at all. What is considered "giving yourself up"? If a QB just stood in the middle of the field would it be considered a penalty for destroying him (with a clean hit)? How many times have you seen someone head towards the sideline and then turn it up field down the sideline? The defense HAS to be allowed to hit him when he's in bounds.
If he wanted to give himself up than he should have SLID so he would be protectd like the rules say to do. There's nothing in the NCAA rulebook that constitutes a light jog toward the sideline as a protected move.
What is there a strike zone for a QB? Can't go for the head, can't go below the waist? Buncha pansies. They play football. If Namath played under these rules he would be the best QB of all time, not just the Jets'.
Do you guys watch football? This is not even debateable, it's not open for interpretation. EVERY time in a situation like that they will throw a flag whether you like it or not.
Seeing as how it was Tim Tebow. No. It shouldn't have been a penalty. I mean seriously. He hit him while he was in bounds, in the waist area. I really fail to see why hitting a QB, who is a scrambling one at that, is a penalty here. But then again, I do disagree with most roughing the passer calls at both levels.
OK, then Is this a Penalty? I think you can?t go by the rulebook here, simply because when it comes to QBs, the Rulebook is out of date. When a QB scramles, he?s not treated as any other runner, like it or not, but that?s the way it is. If it would have been a RB, noone would have thought about flagging it. If he would have hit him above the waist - no flag. But if you go low on a QB, when it?s obviously unneccasery, they call it. QBs just have this "extra-protection" nowadays and that?s why I think it is a 15 yarder.
