So it would be a bad thing if Omar made a dumb trade. But being in contention is always better than not being in contention, period.

By the way, Muniz up, Vargas down.

But being "in contention" will result in the same ancient also rans we've had to watch all year being run out there every day for the remainder of the season. And even if a catastrophic trade isn't made the Mets will probably add a couple more worthless geezers to the roster.

This is actually an interesting point. The articles in today's paper imply that Manuel is so pissed, he is going to make major changes - pulling Perez from the rotation, bencing Castillo and Delgado, etc. It is very likely that this would cost him any chance at keeping his job, since the replacements suck, but I applaud him for it. It's exactly what should have been done last year, over the winter, and earlier this year, but never happened. If the replacements do end up sucking, Omar will also be completely exposed, and there should be a completely new management team in place by November - unfortunately, a year too late.

Everything with this team's FO/CS is too late. Firing the last GM was too late. Firing Willie was too late. Firing Howe was too late.

Firing Dallas Green and replacing him with Valentine was about the only time they got it right. And they fired Valentine too early considering the shitbags he had playing playoff baseball.

I don't know how much change Manuel will actually be allowed to make on the lineup or the roster, but even though it may not have any practical effect it's really nice to hear a manager speak the truth about the pathetic Mets lineup rather then the same old BS about "my guys" and having to get in a little groove.

Very true. Willie was far too stubborn; we may see something actually change here.

To respond to your earlier point, I still want them to make the playoffs, which is entirely possible right now. We don't know how what Manuel's going to do, so I won't bother speculating about who plays and who doesn't, but I don't want the Mets to just play Reyes, Wright, Beltran, and 5 or 6 scrubs, I want them to try and win.

Did you catch Castillo's comments about not wanting to platoon/rest? He has thrown down the gauntlet on Manuel. It will be interesting to see if the manager exerts his authority. Speaking of which, why is Delgado still in the lineup?

This was one of the big problems with Willie, and not only with respect to the scrubs. Wright said exactly the same thing, and Willie never sat him (even for an inning); supposedly when he tried it before yesterday's game ("If you're going to sit me there's going to be a fight") Manuel said "There's no fight - you're not playing." If he is unwilling to exert his authority over the team (especially crappy players like Castillo and Delgado) then he deserves to be fired now, rather than at the end of the year. Given the way the team is playing, there is absolutely no downside.

that's the benefit of having a 5 run lead, the other team says fuck it and doesn't intentionally walk reyes in an obvious spot
