http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...ll-Have-a-Top-Five-Defense-Next-Season-050608 Long article, but I spent the last 2 hours working on it.
I'm not sure if we'll end up being a top 5 defense, but hey, nothing like making a bold claim that people don't expect to read and backing it up well. I really hope it comes true.
I'll be conservative and say I think we could surprise to the upside. This TC is going to be VERY important because these guys need to gell and get their timing and communication and awareness of one another's abilities down. The talent is there, but as we all know, that doesn't mean anything unless they can play well as a coordinated unit. IF they can do that and play as a unit (the earlier the better), then I think we'll have a good thing going on here. It's all on the coaches this year at TC. They'll be working with a lot of guys who don't know one another.
I really hope Gholston doesn't hold out. That would be a huge setback, especially since he isn't in minicamps.
I think this year they won't have a Revis holdout- that was his agent and Uncle talking in his ear. Gholston will have a set contract after the get Long and Dorsey's contracts done. Those will be the guides on how to pay him. He will be getting a lot of money.
Good observation. I think you're absolutely right. Tanny doesn't stand a chance of getting him signed until we (they) see how much those other two command. Let's hope that's soon.
so let's just say, hypothetically, they hold out. then we can't get Gholston signed? it seems dumb (the situation, not you or the opinion) that our first pick - a guy we are counting on - hinges upon the signing of the other picks.
I know it seems dumb, but that's sometimes the case. This is because their agents (in our case, Gholston's agent) want to see what the others will command first in dollars. If Gholston signs first, how will his agent be able to explain to his "client" (Gholston) that Gholston got a good deal, if others around him in the first round got a lot more money? Not possible. So we whistle Dixie until others get signed. It's all agent-controlled, unfortunately.
yeah, i understand. so what if they hold out? then we have to wait or do they make a deal based on past contracts?
Every deal is different. We can only hope his agent has some common sense and advises his client to sign and get his ass into camp.
It was indeed a great article. It gave me some extra confidence going into the year however the title is a little too optimstic. I don't see our D being anywhere close to NE, Jax, NYG, GB, Sea, Min, Dal, SD, and a few others.
Five for the top five had a nice ring to it, but they changed it. I don't know if we'll be top 5, but you gotta go out on a limb sometimes.
eveytime i talk like that, my friend calls it,"jet math". if this, then that... i can't argue with anything you said. the only thing is, it always seems to look better on paper, then it does on the field. i want to stay positive, though. i believe you are 100% correct. top 5 here we come!!!
