Looking at the big picture, it probably did work out better in the end if everything else stayed the same. There's also the possibility that Carroll might have been toast by the end of 1996 and then we still get Parcells, without having to suffer through the Kotite years.
The Marino Spike is a part of Jets history whether we like it or not. If you choose not to watch it, don't. But, some people weren't around at that time, nor were they Jets fans at that time so this is in part will help them learn about the history & rivalry of this franchise. If you actually read it, he said, although he hates Marino and Shula, the play itself was a well executed play. Alright, after watching the debacle all the way through until right before the 4th quarter I couldn't believe they could lose this game and the rest of the season as well? Though history played itself out and Dan Marino had his fun there where other things that could have went right for the Jets to prevent Dan from attempting that play. I know, dUH! Several obvious observations in 14 years of hindsight if I may. 1) Why go for it on fourth down at the goalline so early in the game? (3 pts lotf or see #2) Carroll can't even look? He calls the play and walks in the opposite direction. That's building confidence. 2) Thompson, who looked llike a roid head, couldn't roll into the endzone? I know the pass was short but he immediately curled up like a rollie pollie. Very similar style to a one Anthony Becht (6 pts lotf or see #1) 3) Boomer throws a crucial pick at the end into traffic when they were already in field goal range or damn near it with the lead. I think this is part of the pissing match GSour was reffering to (3 pts lotf) Though I thought they could've passed more in other situations. That running game was atrociuous. 4) Offensive line breaks down and allows not one, not 2 but 3 sack/strips (one by Cox) forcing the punt which prevents a Jets offense, that was having their way with the secondary all day, to get a much needed first down to run out the clock. 5)As GSourJr stated: The Jets lost their composure as Marino started the final drive. Carroll should've called a timeout to settle the defense down and give them a chance to catch their breath. But he never did, and the team panicked. You could see them backpedaling as the Dolphins broke the huddle..... 6) As sect105 stated: The fake Spike may have never happened..... At 2:20 left in the 4th quarter, Irving Fryar is injured. That totally gave them an advantage. 7) Rob Moore was a beast all game. Unfortunately, I believe, Brian Cox took care of him with a club to the noggin and I believe he was out during those last series. I don't remember seeing him. 8) And finally, at the end, to add insult to injury. With yet another chance at some dubious points, Boomer throws his jump ball practically into the tunnel. :shit: All those feelings of the same ol Jets were creeping up on me at the end. You could just feel the spector closing in. Well that didn't hurt as much as having to endure it live.

Wasn't this the start of an ugly trifecta for the Jets or am I in the wrong season...didn't we blow a big league to Philly the following week and then again out in LA to the Raiders? I was out in LA on business that day and was able to buy a ticket into the Coliseum. Loved going there but the memory was spoiled as the Jets allowed Raiders to score winning TD in final minute.
Yes, and I've always felt that their habit of blowing leads in that era was in everyones heads and contributed to the spike game. You could feel it coming after a while, especially Boomer who was a veteran and should have been a calming presence instead of heaving the ball all over. He had a strong arm, though.

One thing about that 1994 team, they sure did lay the wood. In the Bills game at home there was one play where Jim Kelly was scrambling and Donald Evans popped him in the ribs. Then later on in the game Kelly threw a pass to the outside to Thurman Thomas and as he was about to make the catch James Hasty put a licking on him separating him from the ball. Then on the very next play Bobby Houston laid out Don Beebe who was going over the middle attempting to catch a pass. Beebe was knocked unconscious on the play. Also on the team was Ronnie Lott, Victor Green, Mo Lewis, Marvin Jones, Brian Washington, Marvin Washington and Jeff Lageman. What a sad waste of talent
I am shocked that Boomer's sidekick didnt watch that game and taunt him mercilessly over the last week. Without Boomers two INT's late in that game, the fake spike never happens.
Boomer had an awful 4th quarter. Being aggressive is fine, but if you have the lead and the ball that late and you're driving, you don't throw it up for grabs. Especially twice.
The NYJs were had. They didn't get over it for a long time. Anytime you watch such a game live, you see the impact of losing to stupidity. Nothing worse for a so-called NFL professional. They never thought he would do that in a million years. And so they couldn't get over it when he did. Those NYJs were decimated by their realization of their own lack of imagination. This was outside their philosophy. So it wrecked them. There's no way around it, when you have to watch it happen to your team live, it is the worst. We all found out at the same time they found out -- on that moment of truth. Out-thought. Out-tricked. Out-played. It was worse than being run over by a tank, because, nobody could believe they could fall for it. This game. The A.J. Duhe game. The mud game when Shula hosed down the field repeatedly before we played. The Phins are dead meat. You can smell them coming before their charter ever takes off from Miama.
