Didn't see it posted. NFL network June 2 at 8 p.m. ET: "Marino's Fake Spike" Miami Dolphins at New York Jets -- 11/27/1994 (originally aired on NBC) Dan Marino's execution of a fake spike for the winning touchdown pass capped the Dolphins' comeback win on the road against the New York Jets. This game proved to be the turning point in both teams' seasons. The Dolphins won the AFC East while the Jets lost their remaining four games to finish 6-10. I got it set to record on the DVR eventhough I know the outcome. Jonesen for some JETS football.
Last night NFLN ran the Top 10 Coaches That Belonged In College, Pete Carroll was #9 and they showed the clip of that game. Lou Holtz was #2, they had Greg Buttle on discussing him, funny stuff.
I try to forget that game ever happened. I thought I saw Aaron Glenn on the side of the road on the way home and nearly ran him over on impulse. That was probably his only bad game as a Jet. In truth, I loved that guy. Heh, didn't he INT Marino the next year and return it for a TD? 80+ yards or something. Somebody go look it up. I never will.
i believe if the jets had won that game they would have been at least tied for first place...... i recall they looked very good at times during the first half but as was the usual case with the jets in the early 90's the momentum was sucked out of them, the wind changed at "giants stadium", and you knew....just knew they wouldn't win the freakin game. gonna watch it tonite for a reality check after reading all the glowing OTA reports these last few days jil
I think it was a few years later but it did happen. I remember Glenn mentioned the spike game when he did it, something like he owed Marino one. The funny thing about the spike play, it looks like Glenn was running in coverage, not completely fooled, he just didn't turn around fast enough. It's not like he was standing there flat-footed.
They were up 24-6 at one point in the 3rd quarter. When Miami went for two and got it to make it 24-14, I knew we were in trouble, we had blown a lot of leads in the Coslet/Carroll era.
Champ, come on man. Your skin is thicker than that. But I do understand your point. Nobody would voluntarily want to get hit by a bus twice. I personally never saw the game so I feel it my duty to further complete my fandom by watching this game and to deepen my hate for the phish. It's part of the rivalry lore. I personally would like NFLN to re-air that barn burner back in the 80's that broke some scoring records where we took it in overtime on one of the many bombs to W. Walker. That was a classic in it's own right.
to think we followed that season up with... rich kotite. and he belongs #1 on the list of coaches who should have never even been given a job.
That was an awful game, one of the worst in our history BUT it was the best thing to happen to us in the long run. I have posted this before but w/o that collapse we are at least in playoff contention down the stretch(we probably still miss the playoffs anyway) and we continue the cycle of getting close to postseason w/o ever bgetting over the hump. That game sent us in a spiral where we finally bottomed out in '96 and it forced Hess to finally do something and get Parcells. Since Parcells came abooard in '97 the Jets have been one of the better AFC teams, last year was the first healthy year we had that was bad and hopefully it's a 1 year thing but prior to '97 we were a pathetic franchise whose good years were coming close to making it to the playoffs.
The funny thing (funny now, anyway) is it was his second job. We fired Carroll from a 5-game losing streak with the Jets to hire Kotite who was on an 8-game losing streak with the Eagles.
and the REALLY funny thing is when leon hess was asked why, he said "because i'm 80 years old and i want to win now"
Worst play ever! I believe the name of the play was "clock clock" because Marino would pump his hand like a fake spike saying, "clock, clock".
I dont lose much sleep after a loss, but I couldn' sleep for a week after that particular game. Killed me. Living in Miami also doesn't help. Go Jets! Squish the Fish and their Dancing Queen!!!
Two things to watch for tonight that I always believed were the key factors in the loss...(1) Esiason got into a pissing match with Marino in the 2nd half, trying to show he was just as good and ended up throwing 2 or 3 needless interceptions that got the Fins back into it. (Remember Boomer was a former league MVP and now Marino had come in and taken over the mantle as the best QB in the league) ...and (2) The Jets lost their composure as Marino started the final drive. Carroll should've called a timeout to settle the defense down and give them a chance to catch their breath. But he never did, and the team panicked. You could see them backpedaling as the Dolphins broke the huddle. At the time, I guess the Jets thought the clock was on their side, but we could see they would have no problem matriculating down the field with the remaining time. One time out may have stopped their momentum. It hurts to watch, but it's instructive to know the history. Makes you a better fan...no pain no gain.
I agree on the further completing the fandom. I never saw the game in it's entirety either, so although I know the outcome, I will sit and watch.
I was at that game and remember saying to myself, "thank God they are going to spike the ball and settle for a game tying FG". About 30 seconds later I was on the escolator.
When you know the outcome it doesn't hurt nearly as much as a live game. Although I've never been able to watch the Cleveland playoff game again, maybe now I could do it. Still can't watch Denver or Pittsburgh though.
I can only imagine. Now that you've painted it in such a way, I can totally understand why some people might have a hard time watching it.
