he is never going to live down that comment. interesting stats, i guess like espn does there is a way to skew any statistics to make them say what you want. i agree that with a trade up it will take alot for the kid from purdue to be considered "worth it" i hope he really does become something special!!!! i think baker will have a larger part than any of us realize on the team this year, at least i hope he does because as far as i am concerned he is our best te and needs to be on the field the majority of the time for the team to be as successful as they can be. who knows with pennington/clemens, although that was a good comment about the win/loss stat. hopefully one of them does what they need to do and show improvement over last year and life in their arm and head combined. hopefully from my perspective it is clemens as that will really help solve a probable future issue. they say stats dont lie but the particular stats they put together often do.
Funny, you are quick to call a player a bust but not so quick to declare them successful. I see a trend here.
Call me stupid, because I know about trading up for Revis and Harris, but who was that third trade-up? And by the way, those kids are both genuine studs.
We traded down in the second round and when he was there we traded up to get him, giving up more than we got in the trade-down I think. I'll have to look it up.
Not to stick up 4 Chad, but I thought the writer's point was more like, "OK they say "Kellen has the stronger arm, but whether it be accuracy or intangibles, Penny has the better completion stats".......
You may or may not hit the jackpot? WTF? Does that mean anything? Way to commit to your viewpoint- "He could be a bust, he could hit the jackpot: you heard it here first, folks!" The stats the writer of this article needs to look at are YAC stats. Chris Baker has great hands: that is not a surprise to any Jets fan, even if it was to the author of the article. The problem with Baker is that he turns and runs slower than any TE in the league. You can measure his turnaround speed in full seconds, I'm serious. Dustin Keller was drafted to grab the ball and FLY. He's going to be a great YAC guy. Chris Baker needs to catch the ball in the endzone to score. Dustin Keller is going to try and score EVERY TIME he catches the ball. And he's got hands. The author of this article is a Michael Lewis wannabe. He seems to point out that since a second year QB and a veteran QB put up similar statistics then there is no reason to be harsh on Chad Pennington. There's more to it than statistics, dude. Now go publish your Moneyball knock-off.
Long term Jet's fandom does this to a person. The Jets have not drafted a hall of famer since 1965, unless that person left the Jets within the first 3 seasons of their career. Sad but true.
God, could one MFing writer watch a game before they open their mouths and bring up MS Calculator? Stupid c-nts, drooling over what doesn't matter. He can't make throws that will beat any above average member of an NFL secondary. And that's what you need out of your passing game, not a gay butterfly kisses extension of your running game. (Yeah, I know about the Pats) but it works for them because then their QB can do rely on his OTHER weapons and tactics, rather than that being the only card he holds.
fftopic: Were you at the Springsteen show in Charlotte? I was there when he held up the sign the kid had, about liking Bruce "way better than Hannah Montana". Its weird seeing that in somebody's avatar.
How is he suggesting that? He's stating that Pennington is supposed to have the weaker arm, then presents the stats. That's kinda the point of the article...
LOL, wish I was, I've seen him on Devils & Dust tour and a few years back w/E street band, but missed him this year.....fftopic:
i agree with his quote on baker being a better reciever then he is given credit for. i've always felt that he was way under utilized, and under rated. also agree with the keller pick as solving a problem that was'nt a problem to begin with. i've gotten killed on this site for critisizing that pick, but i truely feel it could have been better utilized. we did'nt need to move up, and sacrifice a pick, in the process. i'm not saying he won't be a real good player, just not one we really needed.
But if he has a great season then he's exactly what we needed. I've always thought Baker was a great TE that was underused in the offensive game plan. Then I started to wonder WHY he was underused. I'm still not quite sure to be honest, but what I do know is that you don't move up to draft a TE in round one unless you think it fills a perceived hole on offense. You definitely don't do it to gain leverage in a contract dispute either in my opinion. Maybe Baker just can't do some of the things the Jets want him to do. Or maybe they just want someone who can do it better. Regardless of the reason, the bottom line is we have another nice big target for Clemens to look for in the upcoming season.
Apologies. He made the Hall of Fame with the Redskins, no? And yes, he was the other guy drafted by the Jets since 1965 that made the hall of fame. I remember him going for 1,000 yards in 1975 and the beat writers making a huge deal about it because he was the first Jet ever to reach that lofty mark. The Jets were going 3-11 at the time, but hey we had a 1,000 yard rusher. I was overjoyed as only a 14 year old can be by that little bit of trivia. Of course the next season he was gone, typical of NY Jet's history - something supposedly great happens and then it's instantly gone.
