If you are into such things, Clemens is the quarterback of record in that game. He started the game, thus he gets the loss. Same idea with a 2000 game when Vinny Testaverde got injured on the first snap and Ray Lucas took over for the rest of the game. Testaverde got credited with the loss. This is obviously not a big deal and doesn't mean as much as pitchers' W-L records. The NFL does keep track of this, though.
When he hit the end of his five step drop he should of made a throw. He was obviously eyeing the out so you should rip it to him or throw it away on that one. especially when your backed up like that
I agree, I think to play it safe in those circumstances, he should of just had it in is head to throw it away if the pressure came that quick.
Quote: "...It's nice to see a QB willing to stand in the pocket with a huge d-lineman barreling down on him. That takes guts and will pay dividends in the future...." When the QB only has 1.8 seconds, he doesn't think about it. Kellen said after this game that he was actually trying to throw the ball away. I would venture that most of the guys that read / write on this Message Board take more than 1.8 seconds to raise their cup of coffee to their lips.
Quote: "...Wow I forgot how close we were, if a few people made some plays it would have been different...." Without that OL caused INT of Kellen's, there would be a three point difference. I'd say the NYJ D played those bastards to a standstill. It was the offense letting them down again... and that's the offensive line, guys, not the skill players.
It was a quick out route for the WR. The primary WR was Brad Smith on the play. See the play again. Kellen was actually late on the pass and it was a lob pass where as it should have been a quick fire one. Reason being was that there is a possibility of a sack resulting in a safety so the ball has to get out of the QBs hand ASAP and Kellen was late enough for it to be intercepted. The line provided barely enough time. Keyword: ENOUGH, but barely. Look at the reply open mindedly and give me ur opinion.
How can you be late when you get rid of the ball in 1.8 seconds? Do you think he would have been more accurate if he had waited an extra .2 seconds and thrown it -- by then, by the way, Mr. Seymour's shoulder was already planted between his ribs. How long would it take you to take the snap and get back five steps, recognize the route, see the rusher and throw the ball on target. As I just indicated, Kellen said after the game he was trying to throw the ball away. Guess he just didn't have enough nanoseconds to get the job done, did he?
What was this, a hail mary? Brad Smith, the intended WR, ran his short route, turned around and looked at the QB. The ball should have reached him as soon as he turned around. But KC was late on the pass, resulting in pressure, pick 6, and ultimately the game. Every play counts, even if its the first one in the game.
Jets n Boys, please reinact the play in 1.8 seconds. Use your own quickness and lightning mind to do this. Hindsight is 20-10, I know, but the QB had a lot to do in less time than it takes you and I to take a pill and wipe our mouth after swallowing the water. 1.8 seconds was not enough time for Kellen to get the ball out of bounds, as he intended to do. 1.8 seconds would have taken me at my best almost to the 5 step drop, and Seymour would have hit me before I turned around. Kellen got the ball away (without fumbling) in 1.8 seconds. And he failed. Such are the expectations of spectators.
Our offense was dynamic in that game.. Chad deserves to start this season because if it weren't for him carrying our offense, we wouldn't have been able to achieve the moral victory of almost beating the Pats... Chad dropped back to pass nearly 40 times in that game. He had 184 yards passing... Studly... Our drives in that game after the Clemens INT: 5 plays, 57 yards, TO on Downs 5 plays, 17 yards, Punt 3 plays, -3 yards, TO on Downs 3 plays, 0 yards, Halftime 5 plays, 28 yards, Punt 5 plays, 17 yards, Fumble 5 plays, 18 yards, Punt 17 plays, 70 yards, FG (That's right, our O's only scoring drive took 17 plays and nearly half of the 4th quarter, and resulted in 3 points... ) 6 plays, 14 yards, Missed FG 8 plays, -3 yards, End of Game Chad led our O to 3 points vs the Pats. If Nugent makes the FG, and the Baker fumble never happens, hell, maybe we score 9! NE was shaking in their boots! And yes, KeepChad&Kellen, it's true that the OL deserves a lot of the blame... But Pennington was clean for large chunks of time, and did his usual routine.. Short completions, no real threat to score, and drives that sputter out right when they reach FG range, or even just before it... Not to mention abysmal efforts when it comes to mounting scoring drives late in the game when the game is not yet out of reach... You simply CANNOT exempt the skill players from any blame, just because the OL was not up to par....
Are you actually trying to compare us with NFL QBs? What difference does it make how long it takes us to swallow a pill or how long does it take to lift a cup of coffee (tea in my case) and reach the lips or how long it takes you for a 5 step drop? If Kellen cant drop back 5 steps in 2 seconds, shame on the NFL, not just the Jets for having such a QB in the league where even OLs run a 40 yard dash in probably 8 seconds at most. Anyways my point is, this play was a quick out route where you dont wait for the play to develop. Its like, you have 7 seconds left and still need another 5 yards to get into field goal range to win the game. It was that type of , except that it was the first play of the game. When the ball was intercepted, Brad Smith almost reached the side line, stopped, and even turned around. All of that suggests that the QB was late on the pass. His ONLY target was Brad Smith on the play as he had his eyes stuck on Brad Smith the whole time. Brad Smith was even open. Anyways, it was a mistake by QB first to not to pass the ball at its appropriate time and secondly by the OL not to provide enough time for KC to even look elsewhere for an open WR.
Dude, there is no QB that can make that play- Its not Clemens' fault-- Keep C&C is right. Actually, the dude has returned with some good comments.
I can't blame Clemens...I think if that's anywhere else on the field he takes the sack, but that's just inexperience and he was doomed from the start. Regardless he was giving up points. That's just a young QB trying to do too much. I'm tired of the Pennington argument...you can't protect Clemens with the kid gloves forever. If he is going to be a good quarterback he's going to have to go through those situations and yes, he will make mistakes. I'd much rather that happen last season that was already lost and he takes the lesson to heart rather than further down the road when *knock on wood* playoffs get involved.
Man, I can't wait for the 08 season to start so people stop talking about 07. It was awful and the NYJs played very hard to no avail. Time to look ahead for me.
Clemens threw the pick six because he got crushed as he was releasing the ball. If that doesn't happen, Chad never enters the game, it would have been Clemens' game all the way through. Maybe we don't even see the Brad Smith package, maybe we do. It's impossible to speculate.
Just from what I remember, 1 pick in the Baltimore game was on Jmac, the NE pick was on the line, and 2 picks in the Buffalo game were desperation long balls. The first one in the Buffalo game is debatable as to whether it should be on the list because at that point we were down by 10 with 3 mins to go. Still time to come back, but Clemens was cold off the bench late in the game replacing an ineffective Pennnington and it seemed to me that Mangini wanted to go deep. I really don't think he'll throw as many picks given that he has protection and a game plan tailored to his strengths. Last year was just a screwed up year all over the place.
