I've been a Jets fan for about 15 years now. I'm no guru, nor do I claim to be. I like the fact that ANY year we could go 1-15 or 15-1. We're such a roll of the dice. Everything the Jets do has a white knuckling moment to them. And to me... that's just PURE excitement. I was thinking about the end of the Parcells era, wherein Bellicheck resigned from the head coaching spot after what? 4 Hours? And the resentment that came to fruition for other Jets fans after the Pats won their first, second, then third SB's. That whole... "that should be US!!!" The trade off of free agents, etcetc. Then I started thinking about... what if Bellicheck WAS the coach of the Jets, and these moments of glory DID happen to us. The SB wins, the nice drafts, the ability to plug in players at random. And then.... the cheating videotapes. How would that have affected the Jets considering our OH-SO-RESPECTED franchise (Blair Thomas, Kotite, last SB in the 60's). How would the Jets be looked at, if Bellicheck WAS here, and the tapes were in our possession? Is the resentment of their glory justified NOW? Be fair... homerism cant fly here.
Homerism can fly here - and will! Seriously, though, I think we as Jets fans would be delighted with the Super Bowls and would dismiss the cheating as 'something that everybody does'. Deep down I would be bothered by videogate, but I could live with this level of cheating for three Super Bowls in the decade. It's not like this was really serious cheating, like bribing opponents or slipping them a Mickey Finn (sp?) before the game. Actually, for three Super Bowls in a decade I could probably live with that too...
The 49ers and the Cowboys both had cheating scandals associated with their runs also. Only the Steelers and the Redskins got off fairly clean in the end.
Those teams were accused, but it was never proven. The Pats evidence is now in the hands of the Comish. But that's not the point, what I'm asking is... considering our history and lack of respect year in and year out, then the sudden surge to the promise land with Bellicheck as our coach, how would the Jets be looked at if the tapes were in our lockerroom? And now that so many of us here consider the Pats to be cheaters, is the resentment regarding their glory still justified?
I believe in karma. The waterfall of cosmic shit the Pats are heading for is huge. One Joe Namath guarantee cost us 40 years. The epic bitch slap cheating for a decade should cause could be fun to watch.
That's the thing though I really think other teams were video-taping as well and the pats just happened to get caught. Cheating is always going to be there. If it was our franchise? I'd be upset but at the same time I'd be sleeping just fine.
I wouldn't give a fuck. In fact, I'd do exactly what the Pats did and blow every team out...the Jets just wouldn't be bitchasses and lose the friggin Super Bowl.
I honestly believe Namath sold the Jets soul to the devil for that one superbowl! We should have gotten back at least by accident in 40 years!
To say you'd be fine with it is to admit that you'd be ok with cheating to win the SB. The Pats wins are tainted. How tainted I don't know, but it will become more clear the further in time that we move away from it. Pats fans have to deal with their team being called cheaters now, but the feeling that they got from winning those Super Bowls was probably as real as it gets. Thats the only thing that would make it a tough call. Nothing can take away that feeling you get when your team wins a championship. Tainted as the wins may be now, you can't go back in time and rob the fans of what I would imagine was a pretty awesome experience.
No way. Those SBs were ill begotten. Bellicheat has proven to be a FRAUD -- in retrospect, I am happy as a clam he quit the HC job here.
just going to toss in my 2 cents.... I think as one of the above posters said, if we went the distance and won the superbowl, that feeling of elation would be amazing, and even if the game was tainted later on that feeling of elation couldn't be taken away. that said, I would be very sick if I found out the Jets were part of one of the biggest cheating scandals in recent Sports history, if not overall (in the NFL)... I think I would rather lose than win by cheating. thats just the type of person I am, so I couldn't live with the guilt. Hopefully this regime can erase Namaths deal with the devil (or strike a new one I dont care) and get us a SB victory in the next couple of years, but most importantly doing it fairly and WITHOUT cheating...
Screw that!!! After this whole scandal with the Pats and them getting away with it all, I want every player on our team on HGH, Decca, and crystal meth for every single game. I want a sniper in the Met-Life blimp. I want every fan in the stadium to have one of those laser pointers... not the shitty red ones the green ones that you can pop balloons with so we can permanantly blind the other teams... "If you cheat and succeed then you are savvy." Eric Cartman
The feeling of being on top of the world would triumph over any scandal. The Jets wouldn't cheat during the SB, they did it for a few games against division opponents and San Diego. This scandal would suck, but you can't take away 3 February's of pure happiness.
Well in all honestly, it could have been kept a secret all this time. The whole Mangini/Belichick problem started when BB resigned from being the Jets HC, coached the patriots, and then told Mangini not to coach the Jets because he didn't like them for whatever reason. It was only after Mangini became Jets HC that their relationship became bitter and all this BS started to happen. So in theory, this scandal would have never been brought out had BB stayed with the Jets..
Stupid Question This is one of those idiotic "What if>?" questions that I put in the same category as "What if the South had won the Civil War?" or "What if Hitler won WW2?" Face the damn facts: Belichek ran as fast as he could from the NY Jets HC job. There was NO WAY he would have taken the position. So face reailty.
