I'll jump on what your saying and add this..... The 2 minute drill is all about the QB- it was made for them, no one else.
Quote: "...Pennington, according to my calculations through I believe the first 6 games of the season, attempted a lower % of passes 10+ yards down the field than any starting QB in football (including guys like Joey Harrington)......." I watched each of these games as did you. And it was obvious that when the running game failed to make much of an impact, the play-fakes were not respected. It was also obvious that when the defense no longer respected the running game (laughter), then it was pin-the-ears back time and the passer was rushed in every way possible, with abandon. The amount of time the QB had to allow his WRs to complete their routes was squeezed to less and less. As a result, the routes he could throw to become shorter. This pattern seems to be a function of a failed OL, and diminished alternatives as a result.
Quote: "...If a QB needs support from his running game in order to complete sideline passes at any juncture of the game, he has some serious problems......" An OL that is delivering on the running game is able to force the defense to stay honest. If the defense doesn't respect the OL and knows it can rush the passer with impunity both because these guys on the line can be beaten, and nothing else is coming except the pass -- they know they can keep the QB from throwing the long ball. They know that can strangle his timing, or sack him. The QB has diminished opportunities (and less time) because of the failure of his OL to win and dominate the line of scrimmage.
Quote: "...If you throw out the stat sheet, and simply watch the games, there is NO argument for Chad Pennington to continue to start games for this football team......." This is simply not true -- otherwise our CS and FO would be following a very different path. I think you don't agree with them at all. But then they are the ones in control of who this team is composed of, and what this team is going to do to win. I think they have been doing a good job so far. I'm not ready in any way to throw the CS and FO under the bus because the fans are frustrated with Chad or Kellen.
Quote: "...His completion %, and his TD/INT ratio on those passes were also abysmal...." This is directly attributable to the defense shutting down the run, and either sacking the quarterback or pushing him out of his timing, rhythm, or strangling the time he has to allow a play to develop. There were plays I'm sure any QB would like to take back, but they were plays the QB was forced into by the defense taking over his offense -- which starts with the abject and consistent failure of that OL. The QB just doesn't have a chance without the OL.
The Chargers have had the single most talented team in football for 3 years and no SB to show for it because when they come up against a very good team not as good as they are with a better QB they lost every time. That's why they ditched Brees who healthy is much better than Chad who two years ago couldn't get the single most talented team on both sides of the ball to the playoffs. SD will win a SB if Rivers takes them to one and Rivers has gotten an opportunity to get the experience he needs to do it.
They ditched Brees for Rivers, who in my opinion is now worse at QB than Brees was. Maybe he will develop more in the year or two coming and end up being better, but last year he was butt-ugly save a couple of memorable games.
SD will win a SB when Rivers steps up in two or three big games in a row against teams that might not be as good as SD but likely will have a Manning or Brady or Rothlisberger or some other great QB as an equalizer. As good as SD is and they are leagues better than us forgetting the QB position, the QB has held them back.
They almost did it this year. If SD had a healthy Gates and Tomlinson they would have beaten NE in Foxboro.
I can see this being similar to the Giants and Manning. I still don't think Manning is the second coming of much more than a big turd, but he got the job done last year. I cannot say for sure Rivers will suck in the long run, and he does have enough talent around him. That certainly is not an issue.
Winstonbiggs, I agree with you about Rivers -- he really showed us something this past year the way he played hurt so well. And what is more important, he really won the hearts and minds of his team, in my view. What about his receivers?
I was the same lost cause who told you the same time last year that Chad s**ks and that the jets would finish 6-10 before last season. Even I could not predict he would be 1-8 by his own doing. Call it what you want if Chad starts you will be calling me a lost cause the same time next year with your stupid passer rating stats to justify a guy who would not start on most flag football teams!
This is exactly the point. Jet fans are so used to losing that they think if we make it to the first round of the playoffs we have actually won something. As them how they feel about losing in the playoffs in NE, SD, Pitt or Indy! We act like a playoff berth is a Sb win!
Rivers doesn't have the same tools Manning has in terms of his own skill set. Manning is highly underrated in terms of natural talent. Rivers has a substantially better offense around him than Manning has.
I think there are more good runners with the NYG than with SDC -- look what happened with LT went down? Hell, Tiki retires, Ward breaks his leg, Jacobs is nicked up several times, and they still run roughshod over people on their way to winning the Super Bowl. I also think that Manning has a serious advantage in receivers -- he's got Plaxico, he's got Amani, he's got Steve Smith, he's got Shockey, he's got Boss -- hell, even a special teams guy was making catches for Manning....! Now, who was it again that Rivers had -- Antonio Gates and who else?
Last year, i would have taken LT, Turner, and Sproles over Jacobs, Ward, and Droughns any day. Chargers have Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers. They are not on the same level as the Giants but they are guys who can get it done.
has anyone noticed that no matter what the thread title is it turns into a cp v kc debate.i think iread the same posts in the hot chick thread.can't wait for the season
I think you left out that secret weapon -- Bradshaw, that's Ahmed Bradshaw. No there is no question that the NYG's RB crew made a major impact in all their playoff games, as well as the Super Bowl. But when LT went down, that was all she wrote for SD, because the other backs and the one-legged Rivers just couldn't seem to carry them.
It doesn't matter what anyone thinks or say about Eli Manning, he is a Super Bowl Winning, MVP quarterback. He has as many SB rings as Peyton. And as lackluster as his career has been otherwise, I'd still take him over any QB on the Jets roster.
