Good post. I almost forgot the NFL changed the rules to the fact that the more exciting team in a game gets the win, regardless of the score. It seems like you care more about entertainment than wins and losses. Go watch Arena football then. In case you havent noticed, all of the recent SB winning teams didnt exactly have "exciting" qb's with exciting wide open explosive offenses. Tom Brady was never really "exciting" to watch in all his super bowl winning seasons. The only season Brady was really "exciting" was last year, and he didnt even win the super bowl. Eli Manning was far from exciting, as was Roethlisberger when he won the super bowl. The only qb super bowl winning qb in the last few years who was "exciting" in that season was P. Manning. Hate to break it to you, but "exciting" qb's dont win championships, dominant o lines and d lines do.
I put it in writing on this site before the draft. Didn't hate the pick of DBrick but I hated Leinart and QB was absolutely our no. 1 need and Cutler was the guy to take in that draft after Young went to TN. Several others also felt that way and put it in writing PRIOR TO THE DRAFT. I had no problem in passing and taking Clemens but the fact is by taking Clemens they needed to be right and that means playing the guy now in year 3 of a 4 year deal and finding out. http://http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=2738&highlight=Cutler&page=3 http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=5448&highlight=Cutler I would have tried to get Ryan in this draft and said it and I would have made a move for Quinn last year and said it, but only if they don't believe in Clemens. The fact that the Jets need a QB doesn't take a lot of hindsight, it just takes being a fan for the last few years. It didn't take any hindsight after the 05 season to know the Jets needed a QB you would have to be a blind squirrell sitting on a patch of acorns not to realize that. The Jets knew they needed a QB signed Ramsey and made Clemens their guy. Ramsey didn't work out Clemens is in year 3 of a 4 year deal, it's time to see if he was the right pick. Chad is toast, NFL backup material, its not his fault it is what it is, he can't throw the football in the manner required in the NFL and the entire league knows it. The 06 draft was a frenzy becuause you had Mario Williams who was the stud in the group a Michael Jordan type potential in Vince Young and a great potential NFL pro QB in Cutler along with great talent like Bush and Davis right at the top. DBrick was a good pick where we picked but he was all about not making a mistake not reaching for the brass ring. The best thing that happened to us in that draft was not taking Leinart. If they believe in Clemens this is a none issue. Having a QB comp if that's the intent is a sign they don't believe in him. He needs the reps and the confidence of management. If they don't have it in him they should have moved in a different direction sooner if they do and he is the guy than I have no issue at all. I do believe if there is an open comp it's because they don't believe in him and Chad probably will be the starter. This is pretty much what Herm did with Chad in 02 which was a huge mistake.
I think this over-emphasis of guys on this Message Board focused on the NYJ QB right now would be dangerous for the team if it reflected the CS and FO attitudes. The first thing the Mangini / Tannenbaum regime had to do was rebuild the offensive and defensive lines. That's not a single-offseason chore. The next thing they had to achieve was a linebacking corps that given the DL could stop the run and help defend the pass. This is not a single-offseason chore either. Once there is an OL to block and a DL & LB corp to stop the run, then it's time to prove what you've got or bring in better skill players. Otherwise, if Mangini / Tannenbaum had been bedazzled and seduced by "Sexy Picks" as fans so often are, they would reap a lot of busted up RBs and maybe some happy feet David Carrs, largely caused by their team's own OL and DL deficiencies. Seems like a reasonable path to stability to me.
The play does start up front, as Dick Vermeil once said.... but it finishes at the QB position. What we would like is consistency at the QB position, a guy who doesn't turn the ball over late in the game, and can sustain game winning drives when it counts, a man who can make his OL play harder for him as well as the other players on the field - who can make everyone else better, a true leader. This offseason, the Jets brought in players to make the LOS their playground. Now that thats in place, lets go get the QB who can lead the team to success every year.
Common sense is watching Chad not be able to throw a Ten yard out and saying it is time to go. Supporting a Qb who can not throw is insanity!
If we had the Afc Probowl team blocking for Chad he still couldn't get to the Superbowl. At some point against the elite teams in the league he will have to throw and it will be game over! He has done it before he will do it again! How much longer do you want to wait for the miracle that is never gonna happen!
But I think the CS / FO are actually saying that maybe we already have the right guy, and so let's just find out.
They will go the way of the dinosaur for not accepting this obvious fact. Seems like every team, analyst and half sane football fan can see what the rest of the so called Gurus that run the Jets cant.
That's not a fact, that is your conclusion and you're certainly entitled to it -- of course your conclusion is not the conclusion that the CS has come up with -- so we're having this competition. I think really your differences are not so much with the QB opinions on this board -- you just can't stand the decision making of the CS.
No, he wasn't. Williams was gone. Bush was gone. D'Brick was a guy who would have been a top 5 pick if he came out as a junior, and was one of the best LT prospects to come in a long time. This guy wasn't and isn't some "safe" pick. I was a Cutler guy myself, but fans always gravitate towards the skill position guys. That doesn't mean anything against D'Brick though. I realize it's NY and we needed him to be an All-Pro yesterday and everything, but it's not like he's the problem or we'd be *that* much better with the guys available to us. We would have had no shot at Thomas last year. No shot at Long this year. Who knows what would have happened had we taken Cutler or Ngata over D'Brick. Maybe McNeill or Justice lasts to us, but maybe we don't take them because of their respective draft time issues. Who would be playing LT for us right now? That'd make our already questionable situation at QB even worse, wouldn't it?
I don't like the decisions the Cs has made regarding the Qb and I don't like Chad as a Qb. Not as a person. The man can not throw, run or make anybody on the field better by his presence. If he was a coach I would love him. The Cs came up with the conclusion that we had a good year in 06 due to a good team instead of a weak schedule where we played 4 teams over 500. They ignored Chads 17 int 16 T/d season and could not look past the fact that he was done. The Jets teams that won in the past have won despite Chad. Life is a cruel place without Curtis Martin to bail you out.
If you get the sequence of your priorities wrong in rebuilding a full-of-holes football team, you will simply have to start over when you discover the sequence problem. By the time your startover begins to work on the reinforced holes, you may find that the original fixes have come undone because of age, injury, contracts, or something yet to arrive you were counting on a lot sooner. If you look at the contracts of the 'fixes' on the OL, DL, and LBs, then you see when we have to do what else to win. In examining the CS's and FO's moves to date this off season, they are looking to see if they've got the OL and DL right now. If they do, anybody they have back there will have the time and the opportunity to do pretty good. Maybe not worldbeaters in 2008, but they're counting on the next off-season to get the team fully like they want them. Woody Johnson has said this is not a win now or else strategy. They have a long term plan. Of course, from my perspective as a fan, this is absolutely not soon enough. When I look, though, at all the money, time and effort the CS and FO have put in to get the NYJs to this point, I can't really say they haven't done everything they can do, given their priorities. Of course it's not enough for me as a fan. It also may be that there are more moves they plan to make before this off-season is done; I hope so. In the mean time, I don't care who the starting quarterback is really. They're giving Chad a fair shot, and they owe Kellen a fair shot and Ainge is just starting out. Chad and Kellen and Ainge will bring out the best in each other in this competition -- the CS will make damned sure of that.
As I have stated before Chad can have until Christmas to throw and it still will not matter against the Pats, Steelers, Colts, Chargers or Jaguars in a game that matters in Jan. He does not scare anyone and eventually he will have to throw. He has had time to throw in the past against Sb caliber teams and he has done the same thing time and time again. Nothing! We are six seasons into arguing about a Qb that has been done for at least 4. At what point does this madness end. Kellen did not get a fair shot last year when he obviously beat Chad out for the job in the pre-season. They have given Chad a fair shot for six years and he has proven to be nothing more than mediocre. We have seen the best of Chad it was in 2002. There is no place to go regarding his skill.
We had a crappy team from the 05 year and plus Chad didn't have a running game at all in 06, I mean we had Kevin Barlow as our starting HB.
Last year Tom Brady had a top tier receiver to throw to for the first time in his carer, Vince Young has not had a receiver since he joined the league, The chargers have no receivers since Lt came to town. I want a qb who can make the players around him better not vice versa. Even the years when Chad had a running game he still folded like a deck of cards when he played the Sb caliber teams.
Vince Young sucks, Tom Brady having nobody to throw to his whole career is a bullshit myth plugged by people who think big names are the only names, and the Chargers have a solid, if unspectacular group with potential PLUS the best pass catching TE in the league...
Can you name the four bums that were the Pats recievers last year when the pats went to the Afc Championship and beat the Chargers because they were able to load the box on Lt because there was not a decent receiver to speak of on that team. Tom brady had top receivers this year and look what happened. He broke the single season T/D record and it was not by accident! Where is Deion Branch been since he left brady? The CHargers have Gates. The rest are mediocre at best. As much as Vince Young s**ks he has been to the playoffs with way less talent than Chad. Put Chad on the Titans and they have the first pick in the draft the last two years! Vince young had two 14 point comebacks in his rookie season throwing to who? Nobodys. How many 14 point comebacks has Chad had in six? He made it to the pro bowl? How many times has Chad gone? He was a national Champion and Rookie of the year? Which one of those accomplishments has Chad had? And he has done it without nothing remotely close to Curtis Martin or Lavernious Coles on his offense or a owner that will spend 140 million to get him help. IF Young s**ks then how can you even defend Chad!
