Slower (40), but bigger (wght) and stronger (16 > 9 bench), and with better acceleration (10 yd + 20 yd), and similar proclivities and good ball skills, I think the comparison is sound. Expect good things here, especially with the improved defense and pass-rush.
It has been widely reported that Lowery is a very serious student of the game with a voracious appetite for film study. Not so sure if Asante was the same way and I haven't seen any indication that he is of the same ilk when it comes to preparing for games. I'm hoping that Lowery turns out better than Asante. From what I gather there are a lot of similarities between him and Everson Walls. Ballhawks who are slow-of-foot but very-quick-of-mind. His size also lends itself in run support and I hope that he will be above Asante in that department.
of course, this is entirely in measurables. I am a big time fan of Lowery, and I am very glad he is on our roster, I would not be shocked if we struck gold with this kid. However, can we stop comparing him to above average to great (I say this, because many people believe Samuel is the product on NE system. regardless he is at least above average because he is the best CB the Pats have had in a while, other than Law of course) CB's in the NFL before we get to TC?
its not just measureables. its also awareness, risk-taking and ball skills. as well as the coach and the system.
There more i look at Lowrey the more i see a safety, i dont think he can be a man corner. In a tampa 2 i could see him play corner but not in our d
I have never seen him play, so I'm only going off of what scouts have said. It does sound like he will eventually be moved to safety. It is a question of when. I figure he's likely to play cornerback for a few years. Even if he plays the position as well as Samuel has played, Lowery could still be moved to safety a few years down the road after he loses some speed.
we don't play man to man on both sides all the time. not even most of the time... and it would cost a fortune to have two CBs that could do that.
perhaps cakes perhaps. http://youtube.com/watch?v=S_LKUYxnkaI&feature=related these guys do a good job a diagnosing his strengths and weaknesses: http://youtube.com/watch?v=apydtn_YL7g&feature=related
It happened to Ronnie Lott and that worked out okay. I'd like to learn some more about Lowery, but as a safety being a film junkie is a huge plus!
he'll fit in perfect with rhodes and revis in the film room. rod woodson is another that did it, albeit later in his career. --not to compare to any of these greats...
The guy in my avatar also made the change. Shafer Suggs was the Jets regular starter at LCB as a rookie. Then he started at strong safety the next three years.
Corey Chavous is a huge film junkie. He's another one who started at cornerback. He played corner in Arizona. Then he signed with Minnesota before his 5th season. The Vikings used him almost exclusively at safety.
Actually Chavous is a great example. I was going to mention him earlier in the thread about his near psychotic film study as an example of a player who has made the most out of film study. What a great example of a player to compare to Lowery.
