our starters schould be clear, but did i miss something, or are our backups Bender, Montgomery, Garner and Oldenberg (or whatever his name is)? I know some here don?t care about depth as long as guys like Elam, Barton and Barett are starters, but i think this is a really scary situation and we have to adress that. So are there still some guys out there, we could bring in? Clement? Olivea?
Here's what you missed--there are still four months left before the season. We had no line two months ago, so before depth could be addressed we needed starters. Now through the end of the pre-season we can address depth on the O-line.
There is no question that the off-season is still a long one -- ahead of us. I get the impression that the CS and FO believe that (a) they need to give Callahan a fair shot at what we have in camp, and then (b) what 'falls off the truck' between now and the beginning of season will likely have some gems that we can mine. It's not just about any bodies, however. Whomever they sign will have to be coachable, in Callahan's mind. If we're going to bank on his leverage for the OL, then new candidates will have to hit it off soundly with Coach Callahan. He's here to make a difference. Here's hoping he does.
What about June 1st cuts. That's where we were able to scoop Pete Kendall up, right? Usually some great values there.
I also expected us to get some oline depth in the draft however I'm sure we'll pick up a vet or two after June 1.
Yeah, but this time we can spend on June 1st for depth instead of depend on somebody getting cut to come in and start. I hope we do pick up someone with experience because I really don't like our depth at all, and I'm not a fan of the right side of our line regardless of the Woody signing.
Moore was solid enough and Woody will provide us with a great deal of flexibility because he can basically play OL spots. We'll probably see Woody at center if Mangold has a prolonged absence due to injury. If anything, I'm hopeful that we can find a solid RT as a back-up to Woody. That RT will probably be the first one off the bench if we had injuries to C, RG and RT. You have to put your best five on the field and that probably means shifting Woody to another spot if the need ever arises. With the value the teams place on OL's, I doubt it very much if we'll be able to have a decent waiver pick-up. We'll probably have to rely more on the home-grown players. Garner certainly seems to at least have the size for it. Bender has another year and hopefully has gotten stronger and more knowledgeable. Oldenberg, wasn't he the Pats cast-off who was put into the practice squad? Do know much about Motgomery.
I hear this guy Adrien Clarke is a total beast. We should add him to our D-Line: apparently, he knocked out two quarterbacks last year. Seriously, though. We just got our starters. Now we're worried about depth? Already? You know what they say, Rome wasn't built in one off-season. Personally, I like Jacob Bender. He got some playing time last year and he could probably plug in anywhere on the line but center. Let him grow and stop jinxing our freakin' O-line!
When did Bender get some playing time? Did he even dress up once? And Moore didn?t suck as much last year as he did in 2006 but he was far from beein a solid starter. I just don?t get why we got rid of Wade and Clement, those two would have been solid backups at a reasonable price.
Bender played in 2 games. Can't remember which ones, but he did play. Here you go http://www.nfl.com/players/jacobbender/careerstats?id=BEN007006 I disagree about Moore. Hes average at best, BUT hes a tough mofo and rarely gets injured. Sandwiched into a half decent line I think will actually lift his game. Clement went because hes a turd, Mangini said so. Wade? Do you mean Wade Smith??? He was released as a FA. Now at the Chefs I think.
Don't just click off the resumes?! The OL has got to get fierce together as a single weapon. The line of scrimmage war requires huge effort with a nasty attitude -- from everybody not just a wild ass who likes to tear off folks' helmets like Turley. The OL needs to learn to whip hell and determination out their opponents within the rules. Their goal is absolute discouragement. There needs to be competition at every spot. When you have all-out effort from the OL, as it takes to win up there, then you better have somebody ready to step in if somebody needs a breather or needs to get something wrapped up. Depth isn't an accident, it is a coordinated plan. The OL has to be a strategy that works beyond the first string. Hopefully, we will get with it.
Quote: "...When did Bender get some playing time? Did he even dress up once?..." According to the newyorkjets.com stats, Bender played against Buffalo (2nd game) and against Washington last year.
Sitting on your hands and pretending a bunch of young guys are going to come out of nowhere and start and be productive is a great way to jinx your o-line. Signing a questionable guy at RT and then pretending he is going to stay healthy and shore up that side of the line is a great way to jinx your o-line. One key injury and it's 2007 all over again. The team did depth your way last season and a starter walked and the rest of the o-line fell apart. Your way sucks.
I don't think he actually "has a way," Abysmul, I think he just neglects the area as not very important. So it will rise up to bite him in the ass when possible.
I just don't get the idea that now that we just signed Damien Woody and a couple of young nobodies for the right side, that the line situation is fixed and we can go ahead and stop worrying about it. I'll never understand that. Not after 2007. If the team wants to create competition at all positions, bring in guys that can compete.
I wonder what will happen to Shane Olivea from the chargers he was good then all of a sudden lost his drive and was cut by the Chargers I heard. He is still a FA from what I heard I remember hearing rumors he came in for a visit same time as Woody did. I wonder what became of that. It would be interesting to sign him maybe as a 1 yr offer veterans mininum if he still has an interest in the game.
