I would rather have Ainge start than Pennington.

Hard to read a defense when you are running away from huge defensive men trying to take your head off....Oh and always helps to have a great running game like we did. Ainge would be Bolinger all over

Thanks Brother for tellin it like it is. One of the best QBs to ever play had problems winning without a running game. Ask Dan Marino what its like to have to pass to win..And he had a good arm....No superbowl wins for him. Gotta Have a running game and a defense before you can ever worry about qb.How many superbowls were won by teams with Bad defenses. Let me help you ...NONE. How many were one by average Qbs...To many to count. Be nice to have a superstar at Qb. But with all the other problems we had last year just fixin Qb would not have mattered much. Pennington will start and we will see what he can do with a supporting cast around him. If he cant do it , we are screwed for years to come, cause Kellen aint the answer

Well I also think that Clemens should start, but you are wrong about Pennington. What he can do gives us a better chance to win than Clemens or Ainge in a lot of situations, but it is time to stop playign with the guy and jsut make a decision. If Chad left NY, he could beat us on a diff. team. I don't know what you watch when you see a QB play or what your opinion of a good quarterback is, but ruling out Pennington as a good player is wrong. He's limited, but not obsolete.

couldn't have a better point. i completely aggree. i honestly believe that without throwing the ball to Moss at Marshall, he wouldn't have been even close tot he number 1 pick that the jets took him at. Anyone can have a good year throwing to Moss (ie: Culpepper, Brady). Get this asshole off the team and get me a gunslinger with some potential

I would rather have my balls slammed repeatedly in a car door than start the season with a rookie 5th round QB.

I don't agree with the reasons WHY, but I do agree that starting Pennington does nothing but delay the progress of the franchise....

Therefore, in my opinion, starting Erik Ainge would do more for the future of the franchise than would starting Pennington... However, we would be completely sacrificing this season, and I'd rather not do that.

That's why we must go with Kellen Clemens.

A rookie over a guy who's proved he's a winner when like any other QB in the league, has the right personnel around him. Come on, be serious...Add all this talent then start the season with a rookie at QB???? If Pennington wins the job he's going to make a lot of fans eat some crow.

I'd rather have Brad Smith running the wishbone O than Ainge starting next season.

    Here's what people don't understand...

Pennington has had two shoulder surgeries. His effectiveness has been declining ever since.

However, maybe, as you say, if he wins the job he'll make a lot of fans/critics "eat some crow" but that doesn't change the fact that him being the starter will only delay the progress of the franchise.

Unless he steps up to a level he has never been at in his entire career and takes us from 4-12 to Super Bowl title this year, going into 2009, we'll have two young, healthy, but completely unproven QBs on the roster (Ainge and Clemens) and Pennington.

At that point, if we hope to be competitive in 2009, we'd be foolish to go with one of the young guys. Then, we'd be relying on a 33 year old QB, who has deteriorating arm strength, to play two straight 16 game seasons, plus the postseason, without getting injured, while playing at the highest level of his career.

It's pretty simple to me. No matter how well Pennington plays, his window is 2 or 3 years MAX! Thus far in his career he has shown nothing that says he can take us to the promised land, and this team is not ready to get there in 2008.

So we make that 1-2 years for Pennington to play at a level he has never reached in his career. And after that, we will have two unproven QBs on the roster still, and we will have to start all over again.

Right now, we need to put Clemens in the lineup, and see what the kid can do. If he proves over 16 games in 2008 that he has what it takes, then we have our QB of the Future.

If not, then we can bring in another young QB, give Ainge a spot in the competition, and try to find our next QB while this team is still young.

Why waste a season, or two, or three, with Pennington at the helm, at the expense of the rest of our franchise?

I just realized we're arguing over the starting QB when we're not even done with OTAs. I hate the offseason.

Do people just forget the guy was playing with a torn rotator cuff in 2004? Handing off and throwing some short passes was all he could physically do. The coach should have never let him play through all of that, but he sucked it up and did the best he could. He had us within a kick of the AFC championship game with a shredded shoulder.

With that being said, I actually want Clemens to win the job in TC, but for some reason I don't think he will. Starting a rookie 5th round pick isn't even close to an ideal scenario.

Apparently you missed our future Hall Of Fame Running Back Curtis Martin over that time Frame. Curtis Martin is the reason we were winning. He is going to the Hall of Fame as a JET!!! NOT Chad!

I believe in Jan 1998 Vinny T took us to the AFC Championship game and nearly upset the favorites to win the SB (who eventually did). Chad sniffed the AFC game. Bad comparison.

    Yea...one player...because that's how it works on a football team...sure...completely correct

p.s. I do in fact realize the hypocrisy in trashing this thread and then continuing to participate in it

I think he was refering to vinny's subsequent years with the team. He was on fire in 1998 but after that he didn't really impress.

Granted, but he still was the QB at the time. That credits him as taking the Jets further than Chad. Although, this is pure technicality.
