At the time they picked him ESPN reported that the Jets considered Ainge a 3rd rounder on their board. That would mean they feel they "stole" him in the 5th.

Will be part of the QB competition this summer as Clemens was in his rookie season under Mangini who was also in his rookie year? I think he may be but I'm not sure he has any real chance of winning the job.

(BTW, I figured it was time to start another thread that is sure to deteriorate into another Pennington vs. Clemens argument)

No...he certainly will not be in the running for the starting job. He is a 5th round rookie QB. He will need time to learn the offense, adjust to the NFL game and develop his mechanics and skill set as a QB.

He will be the #3 QB behind KC and CP and there is nothing wrong with that.

As Mangini said.... " I like Chad and I like Kellen " when mentioning the competition for next year

No chance. He is a 5th round pick vs. a 2nd round QB with 2 years experience and a veteran QB with the initials CP. Ainge's pick meant Chad is going nowhere. It will be a Clemens vs. Pennington matchup this summer. By the way, I heard Clemens had a 10 year affair with some country singer and he does steroids.

I agree, and I'm sure the coaching staff has hopes of him being 2nd string in 2009 under Kellen. If that is not the case you can assume we would go after a QB in the 1st round next year.

He'll be in the running for the job in a few years at best. He is a decent late round prospect with no real chance of winning the job comming out of camp.

Karma is coming, not this year though. Next year an ancient Ted Bruschi will knock Clemens out for the season with a nasty hit. The unknown 5th round backup Erik Ainge comes in and leads the Jets to the next 3 SB championships.

Not yet. If Clemens doesn't work out, Ainge COULD be the starter sometime in 2009 or 2010.

    Kenny Rogers?

I would love to See Ainge beat them both out, but he has to beat out Ratliff first.

He wont be the starter on day one. But he may likely see some action a lot sooner then people in this thread are posting.

I hope Ainge will prove everyone wrong. He will be given a fair shot. I mean as long as Ainge or Chad is QB and doesnt turn the ball over we win. Kellen tries to win the game on 1 throw... and fails

    Why Not!?
I'm one who believes give the Job to the best man...
    I don't care if he's a rookie or not.

Herm said it and didn't live by it...
Man-G says it so let's see if it's true.

If Ainge outplays both QB's it's his, Same with Penny and KC..

eric ainge will also benefit of not get the shit completely knocked out of him, unlike kellen, if he does get a chance, which will develop good poket presence, something kellen lacked and many other young qb's suffer

Who knows? I don't think he would be a third rounder on their board without Shotty liking the guy a lot, although there are so many unanswered ?s on our roster at the QB position that I'm not going to believe any scenario until it plays out. QB is a very hard position to draft. I think he will immediately be in a competition, but adjusting to the speed of the game mentally at the pro level for a QB I think is much harder than other positions. I think Ainge might be a name we hear a lot of in the 2009 offseason.
