Parcells knows talent and if he thinks Gholston is worthy of being number 1 if Long feel through then we should feel good about getting him at number 6. "Mangini downplayed the hot-and-cold streaks, and Gholston said he was simply playing within the structure of the defense. He evidently made a good impression on Dolphins VP Bill Parcells, who knows a thing or two about linebackers. (See LT.) If Miami wasn't able to sign OT Jake Long before the draft, they were prepared to take Gholston with the first pick as the fallback option, sources said."
Parcells doesn't always know talent when it comes to picking in the draft or signing FAs which is why I am a buit scared about pace(who Parcells wanted badly) and Gholston.
I don't like Bill Parcells, but you have to admit, when the guy makes mistakes, he learns from them. From clock management to drafting to managing a team. He had a pretty damn good haul of defensive players in Dallas and I think it's because he relied heavily on support staff to make those decisions. I doubt it was just Bill Parcells picking names off a sheet and dictating them to the peons. That is what makes me forget some of the bad personnel decisions he made with the Jets.
Another "source" has said that Parcells only feigned interest in Gholston as the #1 pick in order to motivate Jake Long to sign.
You can not doubt Parcells acumen when it comes to NFL football and player evaluation. The man has been successful EVERYWHERE he has been. I know we have a bunch of negative posters on this board but this is ridiculous.
The Dolphins wanted Jake Long first overall. Vernon Gholston was #2 on their list most likely. I doubt they feigned interest in Gholston, if Long couldn't sign, they probably would have gone ahead and went with VG. And regardless of whether or not you like Bill's scouting talents, it's never a bad sign when a team running a similar defense wants the same players we signed/drafted.
i hope he doesn't take long to adjust to LB...i doubt that he will but you know how things go sometimes
The Dolphins did not feign interest. This is the real story to some in the know down here. (not me just what was reported): They both had the same player management company. The company said to Parcells," you are not bidding against, it is one or the other". He chose Jake Long and actually gave them a take it or leave it proposal. Which obviously they took. Chris Long would have been the next guy they went after.
He hit on a few players in Dallas but overall his drafts were as average as they were here. he has been successful everywhere he has been as a COACH not as a GM. Is it a coincidence that the only place he won SBs he was not the man picking the talent? while in his other 3 stops where he was he didn't win it all? and his only other SB appearance he lost control during that season whiuch helped NE b/c Terry Glenn was a huge piece that Parcells wouldn't have drafted and NE also got Bruschi & Milloy in that draft. Parcells is one of the all-time greats as a HC but he is nothing more than average as a GM which is why we are lucky he's helping to pick the players rather than Coach them in Miami.
I guess you forget the 2000 draft where he was able to draft Ellis, Abraham, Pennington and Coles. And don't say he had 4 first round draft picks because you just have to look on how other teams missed on their first round picks to know that he did a pretty good job in drafting. In fact he got Coles in the third round. You can simply follow the herd who tries to put Parcells down as a GM or you can actually look at the facts. His drafts were above average.
It was widely published that Parcells though about Gholston because he knew he could sign him cheap. It was sign for less with Miami or fall out of the top 10 which was also widely expected.
NYJunc.....you're 100% correct. Groh had the final say in the 2000 draft. BP's drafts had too many marginal to lousy players.........Boose, Terry, Frost etc. The only good player BP drafted was Randy Thomas.
i think a few things on this: He did like Gholston, he sees him as his DWare/mini LT (no one will ever be like Taylor, ever) Gholston was the backup plan to Long not signing. Feigning interest is nice when you know your 1st guy is going to sign, but if Long didn't sign- Gholston had to be their #2. Our coaching staff and BP are of the same football species, or kingdom or whatever. So i can see them both wanting the same players.
7th round too, if i'm not mistaken. EDIT: MiamiPuck editied in the "7th round" part of his post just as i quoted him, thus making me look like a tard, this is a disclaimer. Thank You.
