The Beavers lost a couple of key players to the draft.

I havent seen them play this year, but I keep close tabs on how they are doing from reading the Canes message board.

When I go down there to visit i will take in a game if they are at home.

ACC Baseball

The Hurricanes are staying hot when it counts.

Miami advanced to the ACC title game, where the Canes will play Virginia in Jacksonville at 1 p.m. Sunday.

UM advanced with a 5-2 win over NC State today. The victory was led by a 3-run home run by Jemile Weeks and the strong pitching of No. 3 starter Enrique Garcia. He threw seven scoreless innings.

"It's exciting because now we're in the playoffs," Garcia said. "It's a little taste of what the NCAA tournament will be like. We've been saying our ultimate goal is to get the National ring but we might as well pick up another ACC ring on the way."

Weeks added, "We have so much confidence in the pitching staff based on what they've done all season. We felt late in the games that we can beat just about anybody as long as these guys go out there and pitch the way we know they can pitch."

Weeks broke a scoreless tie with his two-out homer in the third. The 'Canes added two in the fourth on Dave DiNatale's RBI double and Jason Hagerty's run-scoring single.

Weeks said of his home run that "I was coming into the at-bat ready. I just wanted something that I could drive and the opportunity came with the first pitch he gave me and I didn't want to miss it. I put on a good swing and it led to a home run. That's a big way to get it started there."

Garcia (6-2) struck out seven and allowed only three hits. Carlos Gutierrez pitched the final inning and one-third to get his 11th save, and struck out the final two batters with two runners on in the bottom of the ninth.

Coach Jim Morris said of the victory that "I thought it was a well played game on both sides. I like low scoring games and I like close games, of course I like games that you win. NC State has an outstanding club that I'm sure will do well in the NCAA tournament. It's a big game for us to give us a chance to play in the ACC Championship for the first time since we've been in the Conference. It's an honor to play in that game and we need to go out and give it our best effort and win it."

Miami is now set to face Virginia, a team it has defeated three times with no losses this season. Virginia advanced by beating Florida State, 5-3.

"The ACC Tournament is tougher than the NCAA Regional," Morris said. "We've got more tough teams in this tournament than we'll see in the regional without question. Every game is tough, no question about it and one through eight can play."

The Canes will find out their postseason fate when the NCAA Selection Committee announces the 64-team field Monday, May 26, at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN. The 16 regional sites will also be determined Sunday, May 25, at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
