Anything is possible, but I don't think that was the case. I wish someone else on this board would have been awake at 10 on Sunday morning, watching ESPN, so that I wasn't the only one who saw the interview. Anyway, when he said it, he made it clear he fully expects Keller to play rotationally with Baker and (I really still remember him saying) Posciak. I don't even remember Frank's name being mentioned during the conversation. Honestly, I think that if nothing else, Tannenbaum will waste a roster spot this year to shelve Baker, just to prevent another Kendall situation. IMO, it's up to Chris Baker right now whether his career is over or not. He can play for the Jets for the money he's already agreed to, or he can take off the year, then beg teams to give him the vet's minimum. In the end, I expect to see Baker in camp in July.
If Cincy can do it with superstar Chad Johnson...then we should definitely be doing it with superjag Chris Baker. Funny that Tanny didn't mention Franks at all...maybe he's slow for a receiver and we plan to use strictly for blocking. Or it could all be more GM-speak.
So cut or trade his ass now!!!! So sick of these players signing deals and then crying that they are under paid and was promise this or that.....Why doesnt Baker pomise to catch every ball thrown his way and for ever drop he gives back $100,000.00 and give him $100,000.00 for every catch and $150,000.00 for a TD.
Now keep in mind, me remembering him saying Posciak could be totally incorrect. He may well have said Franks instead. That's why I wish someone else had seen that interview. Here's the thing, I think we're going to start seeing a lot of this happening. Philly opened the door with TO. The Yankees held it wide open with Alex Rodriguez this past winter. The Bengals have removed the hinges with Chad Johnson. Teams aren't going to put up with this garbage anymore. Especially when agents are trying to manipulate situations. In the end, the Union is going to have to step in and tell these players to cut the crap. Otherwise, what you're going to see is lower overall contracts, since teams won't want to be nickled and dimed unless they're returning the favor. What I really want to see is teams start saying things like the Yankees did to Boras and ARod. Basically, if you're a douchebag, you can kiss our ass. We just won't speak to you. Go find your money elsewhere. The only problem right now is that you still have guys like Jerry Jones hanging around, willing to spend that money. You have to get him on-board with the idea for it to work.
Don't forget the way Chicago handled Lance Briggs...that was poetry. I remember interviews with him saying he had the finances in place to not get paid for a year, and he really means it, etc...and guess who lined up next to Urlacher all year...and then signed a long-term contract at the end of the season. Obviously, Briggs wasn't so mad at the team that he wasn't willing to stick around for a few years, which shows that these guys know how to keep business with business and personal with personal as it should be. I hope all teams follow this precedent. As for Jones...good luck getting that fool to do anything that isn't directly in the best interest of HIS team. That's fine though, because Snyder's been kissing player ass for years...and where's that gotten him? edit: Just found this and thought it was funny...from Rotoworld (4-18-2008):
We gave him more money and another year on his deal 4 months ago. Rather than bitch for more money after we signed Franks, he should have woken up and realized the signing was a red flag on his whiny ass.
Spot on, my friend. If any of our offseason moves were directed at Chris Baker, I'd say the Franks signing is the most glaring. The Keller move had more to do with having a big, physical receiveing threat than it did with Baker.
LOL. I had forgoten this tid bit of news and while already on the side of Baker is being dumb, now think him to be not only stupid but an outright asshole.
give the man his money, you would also be mad if the NY JETS promised you a new contract, and they didnt stick by their word
Who promised it???... Besides his whining ass saying so, who has come out and said they promised him a new deal? There are no promises in life... the only thing that is/was promised is the contract he SIGNED and event that is up for debate... but supposedly it's a legal and binding document, which states they pay him X amount of dollars... if he was so unhappy about the dollar amount, he should have never signed the damn thing.
Excellent points alio. As far as the Jerry Jones of the world..that will never be a huge problem for the NFL because of the salary cap. In baseball land...you had Georgie (yankee fan here so this isnt an attack..just the truth) who was willing to screw every other owner to get what he wanted even if what he wanted turned out to be dirt. Jerry Jones couldnt do it to the NFL...he could give it a paper cut...but not really anything more then that. Realistically, you have seen some players change their tune and become slightly model citizens over the past couple years. Those that dont change their tune and continue to act like idiots are either paying..or will pay for it in the not to distant future. When a team like the Giants wins the Superbowl without a Shockey..or a team like the Patriots can make a Randy Moss tolerable, the changes have started to kick in...something the NBA will be facing in the not to distant future. If the Bengals can look at their roster and say that this roster is not a superbowl roster YET...then go ahead and make your statement. Thats why this whole "The Jets really screwed up with Kendall" thing after the fact is pretty hilarous. What did it do exactly? Prevent us from going 6-10 instead. Perhaps it set KC back a bit...but it made a statement. If it were not done..trust me...Coles would not be ready for camp this year...he would have followed suit (yes he was resigned...but the contract just became all guaranteed). The Jets have accomplished nothing with Baker...and he will not get what he wants. Dont look back..thats the policy..move on and forget about it.
Why Did Baker sign a new deal that was announced on 12dec08? If he signed that new deal, why should his current deal be changed...?
Any agent that accepts unwritten promises for millions of dollars should be fired immediately. Any agent that does it with multiple players like these jackass agents of Kendall/Baker should be run out of business for incompetence. This is the second time these asswipe agents have had their client sign a new deal and then turned around and said they were promised another one immediately after. Kendall restructured for a bunch of guaranteed cash and then turned around a year later saying he was promised more money. Baker signed a new deal and is turning around months later and saying he was promised more money. This all stinks of a couple of agents who should get their teeth kicked in.
Oh...now I see what you are talking about..the kinder and gentler... Totally agree..its such a sign of a weak agent that pacifys his client by saying..take this and theres more to come quickly..but a little down the road. Sorry, I just dont buy these players or agents saying that the Jets promised them this or that. Whatever you want to call MT, a liar doesnt fit the bill. Lying constantly or not keeping promises is one way to get your ass kicked out of the league in a hurry. MT, whether you like him or do not like him, isnt stupid.
Chris Baker Sorry, you all, but you are losing me... abyzmul and jaywayne12, you have made assumptions that the agents are "evil," but the players are saying that the team promised better contracts and went back on their word (totally understandable if they changed GMs during that time)... Maybe you two are not working men who have had management screw you over? I think you would both make terrible GMs... My main points: 1. Baker was a very good football player for the New York Jets, and outperformed his contract. There have been very few bright spots for the Jets so if anyone deserves a raise on this team, it's Baker. There have been very few bright points for the Jets in the last few years, Baker is one of them. He does not deserve to be the third- or fourth- highest paid tight end on this team! Are you nuts? 2. After the Pete Kendall disaster (which a few people are now admitting was a total disaster, and which the Jets admitted was a disaster by overpaying that Steelers guard)... It's obvious that certain personnel moves are not just about the player or the pay. It's about how much power and influence "Tangini" have and how much they can wield it. Maybe you guys relate to this kind of power display, I do not. I think their treatment of Pete Kendall last year was a direct contributor to the Jets' abysmal record, and I think that with the terible treatment of Chris Bakr, the Tangini regime is risking another disaster with one more popular player, who they could appease with a million or two, very quietly. But no, it seems that Eric Mangini and Tannenbaum need to remind all of us that they are large and in charge. Well, good for them. And good for you.
