With Franks as our Backup and Keller drafted in the 1st Rd. I Think Tangini might cut ties with Chris Baker i personally dont want him to go but if he's gonna bitch the whole season we might aswell trade him for something before TC.
They would never have done that. We have no reason to believe that the Jet's FO makes promises about restructuring that it doesn't then keep when circumstances (like a career high in catches) allow the player to try to collect on the promise. Pete Kendall was lying last year when he claimed the Jets said they would restructure again if he had a good year in 2006. Chris Baker is lying now when he claims the Jets said they would renegotiate his contract if he had a good season in 2007. It's so obvious. the Jet's FO are truth-telling saints and the players are lying little whores. Right?
very valid point bradway... lets remember guys he is really the only option we have at te who can BOTH block and catch. bubba franks is a big question mark for me at this point. so if baker goes we have 1 te who can block but couldnt catch a cold and we have another who is fast like a wr but is small and cant block water coming out of a hose by tying it in a knot. it just doesnt bode well especially when we line up the rb 8 yards deep every single time we run the ball. i can see them rolling 9 up into the box already, i can see the nickel on first down when they bring in keller. i dont like it one single little bit. forget about the fact that it appears taht the FO is a bunch of liars when it comes to taking care of their guys at a later date.
Thanks, B-Way Yes, of course. Thank you, Mr. Bradway... I was lost until you told me the truth... Thanks! Chris Baker has been a dependable player during a Jets era that has seen many player moves, personnel moves, and front office changes. He's not a great TE but he has been like that old pair of socks you always reach for in your sock drawer... He's like that old, favorite CD you play at certain moments... Not the best, but dependable. A good guy. The kind of player you root for. So OF COURSE Tangini want to cut him, embarrass him, belittle him. Just like they did to Pete Kendall (a media favorite--is that what got him in trouble?)... I'm fast losing interest in the Jets. Tangini inherited a playoff team. If they go south again? They must go.
Dear Mr Chris Baker: you have made some amazing plays and catches for us and we like you. most fans have been calling for the jets to get you more involved. but when you come out and say 'my team lied to me, i'm ditching camp' it can do you NO GOOD. it may swing fan opinion but the the fans don't write your checks. see, coming out the way you did, calling the jets liers WILL: 1- really, really piss off mangini, tanny, and woody BIG time. do you REALLY want to bunk in the rookie dorm this year???? 2- make other GMs who MAY be considering you sceptical (no one wants to be the next coach/GM/owner to be called a lier) so how should you handle the situation? you DONT. your AGENT does. your agent should hound tanny. makes your case. pester. call during dinner. send flowers. havanas. but if enough is enough and you decide to play the boycott card, then ALL you say is 'i love the jets and i really want to participate with my team, but my agent is insisting i sit out a few days while he works out a new contract. i really hope this gets done soooon so i can return and contribute in any way possible. i have all the faith in the world that the high character men i work for will do the right thing'. (ouch) far more effective than publically calling your boss a lying, piece of human garbage. ya think? oh, and next time? for christ sake chris, wait until AFTER the draft to stick a fork into your own career.
yeah, i kind of would be. i remember that non-catch he made in the endzone against cleavland. incredible. i think he is an average TE for two reasons: 1- he is about as fast as the LBs that cover him, which is common for TEs. 2- the state of our o-line has required baker to play the role of a 6th lineman in max protection schemes for 3 yrs now. when you stay in a block on 95% of your plays, well, you get the point. and i don't recall baker getting flagged for too many holding calls, even when he seals the end. but when he does run a route and has the ball thrown to him, he has made the most amamzing catches. that's why so many ppl here would love to see him get a few more tosses. with the few chances he got last year, he has his best year yet. i'm hoping that with an improved o-line, our TEs (baker franks keller) will be far more of a factor. but yes, i like baker and would love to see him back.
he's a good player, somewhat underrated, but cutting him now wouldn't do much for us. he'll have a lot of options as to where to go and it'd essentially give every other player who thinks he's underpaid a reason to do the exact same thing. no, what we need to do is keep him until the end of training camp at the earliest. if he doesn't report to training camp, we fine him until he comes back. we want to discourage this behavior as much as possible, so releasing him much later would be the more prudent move. most rosters will be filled by then and he'll find a job, but he's certainly not going to get a raise. essentially, you're telling everyone else on the club that they shouldn't do dumb things like that. i'd prefer give him 500,000 more in achievable incentives (500 yards receiving?) just to shut him up, but it might actually be a good thing for him not to be at camp since he'll just try to rile up everyone else.
I want to keep baker, and to be honest I wish we had given him more money to keep him happy rather than sign Bubba Franks.
well we needed a backup TE anyway, so I'm glad we brought in Franks, but really I think that we just need to upgrade baker's salary to 2 million this year so he has no more complaints. then fix his whole deal later on... he will be very usefull especially this year next year he may become expendable if Keller comes along like we all hope.
I like Baker but I'm more interested in what's best for the Jets. Unlike the Kendall situation, we have other guys who can play the position if Baker is not going to be an option for whatever reason.
we can't cut baker! we need this guy. i really can't understand how people don't love his ability? we have to pay him. he's being treated like crap, by theFO. seems like every year theres one guy we do this to. i have no respect for them, for this. he performs, he's under utilized, which is not his fault. besides, i see us drafting keller as more of a reciever, then a TE.
Its called a bussiness. People get offered things all the time that fall through. No deal is ever done untill both partys have signed off on it and your word means little to nothing in a court of law. There is a reason all these players have agents and the teams have GM's and lawyers to do the contracts. Baker was sat last year for running his mouth. Now he's rocking the boat some more this past offseason. He is going to get the shaft and has no one but himself to blame. He knew well how Mangini thought about people spouting thier mouth off to the press and did it anyway. For a guy who put up OK numbers this was not a wise decision. We now have the depth behind him in Franks and Keller to get him out of the way and it will probly happen. Not a huge loss.
And according to GM Tannenbaum, you're absolutely wrong. He was drafted to play tight end. As for not understanding how people don't love his ability, what ability? Average, at best, blocking skills? Above-average, at best, pass-catching skills? He's not being treated like crap. He's getting more money per year of the contract than any other tight end currently on the roster.
I don't believe for a second that Keller being drafted has anything to do with Baker, however, is it possible that Tanny's comments regarding Keller's use as strictly a TE are?
So let's allow this to happen every year- player decides that he isn't happy with his salary and decides to go public with his displeasure, making a mockery of the organization. As a means of shutting him up, the front office goes along with his demands and pays a sum which is above and beyond what a player with his background/skillset would command. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense does it? How well do you see your methodology working in the real world? How about Bob from the sales department, on a 3 year contract, who does just enough work to skate by, an average employee by anyone's standards. Bob decides not to come to work one day and instead bitches to everyone he knows that he isn't happy with his salary. Do you as the employer pay whatever money he's commanding just to shut him up and because he feels as though he's being treated like crap? I think not.....
It doesn't matter how many times this is said, people don't listen. This should be the end of any debate about whether or not to pay him more. He needs to STFU.
