If it's true that Miami has locked up Jake Long, does this then allow St. Louis to start negotiating with whomever they might pick ?

And if they are successful, could Atlanta then proceed ?

Anyone know what the rules are ?

Is it possible that 3-4 of the top picks could already be locked in by Saturday ?

It would be great for the teams involved as they would avoid holdouts but it sure screws up the suspense of the draft!

Hah, I see what you're getting at... Imagine seeing about 5+ picks knocked off before Saturday?

But can you really take everything a team puts out as a certainty?

If a contract is announced then yes I would take it as a done deal. I believe #2 can now look to sign there guy I wasnt able though to find out anywhere what the actual rules are.

I'm pretty sure they ARE allowed to start negotiating. I don't see why not anyway.

After posting the question, I went to NFL Network to watch the Miami press conference. During the discussion prior to the conference the talking heads basically said that St Louis is now "on the clock".

"ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Tuesday that the St. Louis Rams, who hold the second pick in the NFL draft, were told today by the NFL management council that they do not have permission to begin negotiations with any player now that the Dolphins have signed Long. A league spokesman said there have been internal discussions to determine whether the Rams have the right to negotiate with a player or players."

As of now they still can't negotiate a contract with, or sign any players.

Ok it seems to be answered, but I mean the Fins and Long had been negotiating for a couple of weeks so I mean unless these teams have contracts waiting in advanced which seems silly because they do not know how it would work out

yeah I heard that as well docny it was on Mike and Mike this morning... Also Mcshay was on Mike and Mike this morning, and he said the coaching staff of St. Louis wants Dorsey, while the Personel Department wants Chris Long. He also said that Personel Departments tend to win these battles. So who knows anyways? i think that the Rams want Dorsey so that is just my opinion, then Ryan goes #3 and Mcfadden at #4 thus Chris Long and Gholston are available at #5. So in the interest of the Chiefs OL and making Brodie Croyle useful, they get 2 OL in the first round ala the Jets 2 years ago. Then the Jets get Chris Long, and the Pats trade back for somebody in need of Gholston. everybody wins...

I heard, that the Rams asked the NFL if they are allowed to start negotiations, yesterday. The NFL said, they should hold on, and they will tell them today. Seems like there?s isn?t really a rule in place for a situation like this.

So the NFL is trying to decide if they should let the Rams proceed. I think they should, but will not.

    Why?

They want to leave the supense for the televised draft going. Not a great reason, but probly what they will come to for a decision.
