SC did a preview of the ESPN 360 interview of Darren McFadden today. The story talked about his brothers' gang affiliations (says they're both out) his mother's drug addiction (says she's clean) and his paternity issues (says he thinks they're his and would be disappointed to hear otherwise). The guy sounds like he's mature beyond his age but who knows what's gonna happen when he actualy gets in the league. Most of the coaches interested in McFadden say that they've either interviewed him personally or heavily researched his past.
You missed a key part of the interview. Afterwards, they mentioned that McFadden had been working with a media coach to improve his image. Everything he said in that interview was rehearsed. I'm not saying that he hasn't changed and living in South Carolina and watching the Carolina/Arkansas game where McFadden ran for 300+ yards, I know how good he is. However, there has to be concerns if he can't stay out of trouble in Arkansas, what is he going to do then while living in NYC. They said after the interview that his sister is going to live with him no matter where he ends up, but still if the front office has any concerns over his character, then they can not draft him.
It will be very interesting if they pass on him at #6 because of character issues. I just don't see it happening.
The Cimini article on McFadden a few months back was great. I don't think this guy is Jerramy Stevens, and I think he's smart enough to know what's at stake. I think we have a good group of guys and I think it's a solid atmosphere for him to come into. -X-
i think the jets will interview him, and really grill him on his past. I think in the end the jets will make the right decision regarding his character. I trust the organization.
Beat me to it... I thought he came off well in the interview, but I'm not sure I'll ever be a big fan of him.
Just one comment on his brothers' gang ties. He really can't help the decisions that his brothers have made in the past. That's their decisions. I know if I saw my brother in a fight I would try to help him out. I'm just lucky that my brother isn't in a gang and doesn't get into fights for me to have to help him out. DMC has grown up with a lot of crazy shit going on around him. I'm amazed he hasn't had MORE off-field problems considering what he has living right in his own house.
I had no idea that Little rock was that ghetto. That club "the palace" Looked like straight out of brownsville.
Yep, you have to expect something like that when a guy with a past like his is projected to go so high, they are still afraid his image will hurt his draft status regardless of all the leaks that Fo's are not bothered about it. All these top 10 guys are campaigning.
From all accounts, McFadden is mature & a good guy. The only problem is, can he distance himself enough from his friends & family if they become a problem? I saw that ESPN interview. They portrayed his mother as pure trash. Perhaps she is, but it was awkward when they asked her if she thought her drug addiction affected her ability to raise her kids & she replied no. Then they immediately cut & asked Darren that & he said yes.
That's hilarious. I was thinking the same damn thing when I watched it. I'd rather stay home with 40 of Old E' than go to a dump like that.
