Haven't heard much talk about this guy but it seems he is dropping out of round one and may be available for us in round 2. He is big tall and athletic anyone know if he is a good fit as a 3-4 de
I think it could work if he was willing to focus on maintaining his position and clogging up space, but I don't think he would be willing to do that. He has such a big frame that I think he could be really good as a 3-4. He is a guy that is all about sacks tho. Watching him in college it seemed that was his main focus. 3-4 DE's don't get a lot of glory. It's mainly all about the dirty work, and I don't think Campbell would want to commit to this style of play. I really like him as a player and think he will do real well for a 4-3 team, I just don't think he would have any desire to play a 3-4.
Idk havin a sack machine next too Jenkins sounds pretty appetizing for me. So on plays we think will be pass plays we put in Campbell and run plays we put in d-rob and if we aren't sure we put in coleman. ; )
Diasagree. Think he fits best in the 4-3. He's 290 lbs with the frame to get bigger. He's not fast enough to be a 43 end. He's got long arms to keep OL off of him. Think Chris Canty.
I think he could bulk up and be a Chris Canty/Luis Castillo type 3-4 end, but he won't be that kind of guy right away...but neither was Canty.
Luis Castillo? C'mon buddy...you're better than this. Castillo is barely 6'3 and weighs 290...very solid against the run. Calais Campbell is 6'8 and already weighs 290. He'd have to put at least 40 pounds on his frame to be as effective at Castillo in the 3-4. Campbell is destined for the 4-3. He's long enough to play in the 3-4, but he's frail. He wouldn't be able to handle double teams, and the linebackers wouldn't be able to roam. Chris Canty wasn't that guy RIGHT AWAY, and he played in the 3-4 at UVA. Calais Campbell is falling, and falling for all of the right reasons. He wouldn't be a good fit here.
he would have to put on 40 pounds to be as effective as castillo? he's the same weight, and is has his frame is long enough to keep the blockers off of him. He is 6'8 meaning he would be more effective batting down passes. I agree he is more suited for a 4-3, but if he wanted to be a 3-4 end i think he would be real effective. I think he's strong enough to control the line of scrimmage. I dont really see why he would have to add more weight to be effective. He's a monster kid.
He is the same weight as Castillo, but he's 5 inches taller and he isn't bulky at all. Castillo is lower to the ground, and has much more stength than Campbell. I honestly think that even if Campbell bulked up to 330 or 340, he'd lose most of his athleticism...which he is already lacking. His frame just doesn't look like it can support the weight he needs to be successful in the 3-4. I'm glad he can knock down passes, but when teams run the ball his ass is going to get pancaked by a tackle/guard combo.
1. Who said I wanted him? 2. You're looking at him for what he is, and not what he could potentially be if he's coached and trained to be something else. 3. I know Castillo's height, that has nothing to due with the role he plays in his D. He and Canty are the better pass rushing end of the two on their respective teams. Both he and Canty have good length to their body, and their above average (even elite) athleticism, strength, and techique for the position gives them good all around skills. 4. I think Campbell has that kind of upside, if he was asked to do it. Nothing about him being a lock to reach it, or even that we should look to get him to mold him into that kind of DE. With his size, frame, and athleticism theres alot of things he might be able to do at this level. Thats half the fun of defensive guys with his kind of size, athleticism, and pass rushing ability. More extreme cases of this are guys like Richard Seymour and Mario Williams, two guys who could have played 3-4 DE, 4-3 DE, and 4-3 DT. Athletes like Campbell will always get alot of looks because of what they can be, and not what they are right now.
1. No one said you wanted him. 2. I am looking at him for what he is, and he's not a good fit for the 3-4...and he doesn't, and will never compare to Luis Castillo. 3. Calais Campbell is athletic? He ran a 5.1 40, and he's frail. He should've played basketball. There such a thing as being too tall in the NFL for certain positions. 4. I don't even want to read all of that crap...That piece of garbage from Miami isn't even close to being on the same level as Mario Williams and Richard Seymour. You're insulting two very talented players by comparing Campbell to them. He was great as a junior, but he was horrible this season. People are all worried about Gholston's motor, while Campbell quit in almost every game because Miami wasn't a good team. He's 6'8 and he plays high...he'll get cut or knocked on his ass every down in the NFL. This kid won't even get to smell the quarterback. He's falling, and falling, and falling, and falling...
You kind of missed my whole...role thing didn't you? This is the same guy who was a sack monster who reportedly ran a 4.7 as a sophomore. He was known for his speed and athleticism before his terrible junior year. And no, he's a whole inch taller than Chris Canty. Richard Seymour is 6'6. John Henderson and Albert Haynesworth are both 6'6, and both could handle anywhere on the 3-4 DL. Height is not an issue here, especially since Campbell hasn't really been knocked for leverage issues from what I know. And WTF is frail? You really didn't bother reading my post so much as skimming it for things you might disagree with did you? Elite Size. Athleticism. Pass rushing ability. Or you're one against misinterpreting in favor of making an argument... And that was dramatic, dramatic, dramatic. He's also a junior now...
My bad...I forgot he redshirted as a freshman. I don't care what he reportedly ran as a sophomore. He ran 5.04 at the combine and that's horrible. He's FRAIL, and he has a horrible frame. Read a fucking book, or you can go to www.dictionary.com and look up the word: frail. You overrate upside so much. I don't want the Jets to draft a project player in the first couple rounds. I want players that are supposed to be able to help the team immediately, not someone who MIGHT or MIGHT NOT be good. The draft is a big enough crapshoot as it is. After round 4, we can draft as many projects as we want. I don't care what a player will or will not become. I want the guy that is the closest to giving us the sure thing. You don't happen to work at a Starbucks or any other type of coffee shop, do you?
1. Um...running a 5.04 at 290 pounds isn't exactly terrible. Is it below expectations? Yea. 2. WTF is frail? Saying he's frail, and then capitalizing frail when asked what it is doesn't really do anything for me. 3. Yea, no. 6'8 with length is far from a terrible frame. OK...so then why is Calias Campbell frail? Cause you say so? 1. Christ, no where did I say I want him. 2. The draft is all about upside. Since our defense asks for a position change from the traditional 4-3 D played by most colleges, we almost have to ask "what can this guy do for my D?" That phrase is becoming more common as teams try more to vary their schemes, but this has always been a big question for 3-4 teams and will remain so for a long time. Yes. Yes, I do.
Frame: He can't get any wider...which is a problem. He's too tall, and he plays high. He's just not going to work out in the NFL. Frail: He gets pushed around, and he gives up. That's frail. I knew it...you are so fucking smug.
Scientific. Fact. I can't beat that. Who knew being a broad shoulder 6'8 290 pound man meant no room for growth. He also doesn't get pushed around...I doubt he'd be so highly thought of at one point or another if all he did was get pushed around. But thats just one smug guy with maybe 1/10th the knowledge you have making a pathetic attempt to speak his mind.
i think he could be a good, canty-style 34DE. but i also think it would take some time and he would have to put on another 20-30 lbs. bottom line: i?d rather see us draft a guy like Moore in the 2nd who already has all the tools a 34DE needs instead of taking a flyer on a boom/bust-project like campbell.
His 40 time is a non issue, especially in a 3-4 end. Anyone else remember "Too Tall "Jones? Same build and height. I don't remember him getting pushed around too much. I'm a Cambell fan, but was dissapointed in his combine showing, bench press with his arm length is a bit of an issue, but also should have been better. I think the scouts felt he had a case of the DWI's (doesn't want it).He is also tough to pigeon hole into a position, but if you check his stats and some tape he is a playmaker. He is only 20 though and if he waited a year he would have gone in the top 10 in my opinion. He can play and is as gifted an athlete as there is at his position. He was doubled all year and had little help on D , which is rare for a Miami team. If he falls to round 2 its because the scouts know something about him we don't.
