Thanks on both fronts. If you saw my "board" its a series of tabbed pages ranking every player at each position by several standards from several websites, video, etc. I won't give too much away but I have a boring job with plenty of time to kill As for the drafts. I hope I lived up to the painstaking expectations set forth for the Jets draft. As for the Packers, I'm glad you liked it. Once you really break down their roster, the average age at certain positions is ridiculous. Also, their depth at certain positions blow and their pass rush needs to be beefed up. Thanks for the comments!
Alright....everyone else is having a breakdown of their picks...so I'll do one as well. I'd like to thank pete for doing a great job as always. This is one of the best mock drafts Ive ever been apart of. TGG might have the best draftniks on the net. I apologize for missing acouple picks(It was inevitable as the draft fell over my gf's birthday weekend) and I appreciate the assistance in my absence. I'm overall very happy w/ my draft, especially Zona. ARIZONA CARDINALS #016 Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon- I was really upset that none of the top corners fell to me at this spot. I also felt like I was in "No man's land" value wise. Stewart I felt WAS good value, will add great depth to an up-and-coming offense, and will fit perfectly into the physical running game Whisenhunt wants to run. #050 Justin King, CB, Penn St.- I agonized over this pick for at least an hour. I had a hard time deciding between Calias Campbell and King. I went w/ King b/c he obviously filled a bigger need...and between the 2 "upsiders" King has top 5 talent...while Campbell has top 10. W/ Wilson, Green, Rolle and now King...there's alot of young talent in that Zona secondary. #081 Frank Okam, DT, Texas- I felt much better about passing on Campbell when Okam fell to me. IMO he projects as a 3-4 NT...and the worst case scenario is he fails at the position and fits in just fine as a 3-4 end. This was the last of my glaring needs and I feel like i got 3 players w/ tremendous upside from outstanding college programs. #116 Kellen Davis, TE, Michigan St.- Tight end wasnt exactly a glaring need, especially w/ a great tight end like Lorenzo Pope on the roster.. But it never hurts to add depth and athleticism. Whisenhunt would love to have a guy as big and as skilled as Davis is for some twin Tight end sets, where he can pound the football and attack between the hashes. Davis is another guy w/ huge upside..which was a big theme for this team's draft. I also happen to be a sparty fan..:rofl2: #149 Bruce Davis, OLB, UCLA- When you run a 3-4 you can never have enough good linebackers. Davis has a chance to fit in, in that type of scheme...I liked his value at this spot and at the very least he'll contribute on special teams. perhaps he lessens the wounds of pace's departure. #185 Shannon Boatman, OT, Florida St.- Imo, Zona isnt out of the woods yet at O-line. They have acouple maulers in Levi brown and Latui(sp?)...but could use some additional athleticism to compliment the Girth. Boatman needs alot of work but he has tremendous athleticism, and stands as a great developmental prospect for O-line guru Russ Grimm to work w/. #225 Davone Bess, WR, Hawaii- I can't take credit for this pick as I unfortunately was away. I will say that he wason my radar and he has a chance to stick. At the very least he stands as a guy to add to the competition for the void at # 3 wr, left by Bryant Johnson. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS #059 Xavier Adibi, LB, Virginia Tech.- Adibi maybe the top cover 2 style LB in this draft. He obviously represented good value at this spot and was absolutely ideal need and scheme wise. A no brainer. He can contribute on special teams and as a nickel LB from day one...and blossom into a full time starter. #093 Donald Thomas, OG, Conn- Pete actually made this pick for me..but I'll take credit for it anyway as he was gonna be my pick:lol:. Thomas had arguably the best combine of any lineman in this draft. He's still raw technique wise, but due to his oozing physical skills and limited experience(never played HS ball)...he could be a big time get. It was a goal of mine to start the rebuilding process of the Colts OL.. #127 Jeremy Thompson, DE, Wake Forest- I truthfully thought Thompson shouldve went before acouple of other DE's in this draft ended up going. He was very solid in college, has a great motor..and again, fits Indy's cover 2/1 gap scheme. Let him develop behind Mathis and Freeney and rotate in to disrupt the passing game. #161 Carlton Powell, DT, Virginia Tech- I liked this guy's character(man do I sound like an NFL Gm) his physical skills and the way he fit into the scheme. Another rotational guy for the 4th qtr pass rush in Indy. #196 Paul Hubbard, WR, Wisconsin- Cant take credit for this, as I mistakingly took a different WR who had already been selected and Pete was nice enough to scoop up Hubbard. #201 Danny Iansanah, ILB, UConn- I likely couldve saved this pick for round 7 as I doubt he was on anyone else's radar. But Lansanah was a monster in college at Uconn, was a great leader, and played in a very similar scheme to that in Indy. He has a chance to stick long term, and will contribute immediately on special teams. VERY underrated prospect. #202 Zach Bowman, CB, Nebraska- Bowman is a big time risk due to injury concerns as well as very raw tchnique. But lets face it, the colts can afford to take a chance. Bowman has elite size and speed, and if he stays healthy, w/ acouple years coaching could be a big "Boom" type prospect.Especially in the cover 2. #205 Jamey Richard, C, Buffalo- Richard is a high character type who many have compared to Matt Birk play style wise. He's another addition to the OL rebuilding effort.I like his value here. #236 Jalen Parmele, RB, Toledo- Parmele is a pure boom/bust pick at this spot. He's 225 and ran a 4.4 at the combine. Unfortunately up to this point he hasnt shown that type of playing speed. If he can learn to come even CLOSE to that type of speed on gameday...he could be a big time change of pace option for Addai. Comments welcome and thanks again Pete!
The Bengals draft is done. CINCINNATI BENGALS #009 Sedrick Ellis DT, USC #046 DaJuan Morgan, FS, North Carolina State #077 Brad Cottam, TE, Tennessee #097 Shawn Crable, DE/OLB, Michigan #112 Dexter Jackson, WR, Appalachian State #145 Thomas Brown, RB, Georgia #177 Bryan Smith, DE/OLB, McNeese State #207 Mackenzy Bernadeau, OG, Bentley #244 Kenneth Moore, WR, Wake Forest #246 Kareem Moore, SS, Nicholls State
MIAMI DOLPHINS #001 Matt Ryan, QB, Boston College #032 Quentin Groves, DE/OLB, Auburn #057 Tracy Porter, CB, Indiana #064 Jonathan Goff, ILB, Vanderbilt #100 Barry Richardson, OT, Clemson #195 Chris Hopkins, TE, Toledo #204 Justin Harper, WR, Virginia Tech. #208 Rodrick Johnson, LB, Oklahoma St. #245 Kroy Biermann, DE/OLB, Montana Thoughts? I personally, would hate to see the Phins have a draft like that. PS: Thanks for the great work @ all the GMs, it was fun. And especially, thanks to WW, he did an awsome Job, once again with this.
THE 2008 TGG MERGER MOCK DRAFT is now officially Closed. Thanks for everyone's help making picks for other GMs to keep the draft moving and the GM's, you know who you are, making timely picks. Next year Spring Break is late (Easter is Mid-April). The 7 Rd draft will probably start the 3rd week of March. If you guys want another 3 rd mock , like this year, we can do it in early Feb. I'm not going to assign teams randomly, the GM's that didn't miss a pick, will have first choice of their Teams (Jets, Teams with Multiple picks.. etc). I believe we had 5 GMs that never missed a selection. Thanks again Guys...it's been fun, looking forward to 2009's draft.
2008 Merger Mock vs. NFL Draft Results The best draft award goes to the Buffalo Bills, GMed by Jabba the Jet. The worst draft award goes to the Jacksonville Jaguars, GMed by JasonJets. The results were determined by subtracting the actual draft position of each player by the Merger Mock draft position. If a player went undrafted he was assigned as the 253 pick. There were 60 undrafted players selected in the Merger Mock and thus 60 players were assigned the 253 pick. I then summed up the players draft position differential for each Merger Mock team to get the total draft slot differential for each team. For example, the Buffalo Bills selected Jerod Mayo with pick #41 in the Merger Mock. Jerod Mayo was actually selected at #10. Thus, the Buffalo Bills were awarded 31 points for the selection of Jerod Mayo. The Philadelphia Eagles, MrElectric29, selected the most undrafted players, 5, Erin Henderson, Barry Booker, Darnell Terrell, Jehuu Caulcrick, Marcus Riley. Two teams had all of their players get drafted: Cincinnati, Cakes, and Tampa Bay, JetfaninPA. The Atlanta Falcons, Jabba the Jet, selected the most 1st round picks with 3: Glenn Dorsey, Joe Flacco, Dustin Keller Tampa Bay, JetfaninPA, Tennessee, Green Hurricane, Philadelphia, MrElectric29, Minnesota, Green Hurricane, each selected no first ruodn picks. Indianapolis and Cleveland also did not select a first round pick but also had no first round pick. Atlanta and Buffalo, both Jabba the Jet, selected the most 1st day picks, with 4 each. Indianapolis, KurttheJetfan, was the only team to not select a first day pick.
1. I picked up the Eagles really late, and only made THESE picks: #080 Jeremy Zuttah, OG, Rutgers #115 Chad Rinehart, OT/OG, Northern Iowa #131 Craig Steltz, S, LSU #230 Marcus Riley, LB, Fresno State 2. Look at my Niners' draft. #029 Branden Albert, OG, Virginia #039 Dre Moore, DT/DE, Maryland #075 Donnie Avery, WR, Houston #107 Chevis Jackson, CB, LSU #174 Breno Giacomini, OT, Louisville #214 Jonathan Hefney, DB, Tennessee Albert was a steal at 29, and Avery at 75 has to be in the Top 5 picks, he was the first receiver drafted. I agree with Jabba having the best draft, but there's no point in trying to call others out in a MOCK draft. I really appreciate the numbers system though, it's REALLY important.
I never intended to call anyone out. I took a simple numerical approach to looking at our results versus the actual results. Obviously some are skill, some are luck and some are misrepresented like your Eagles draft. I attached names only because I thought people would be interested in who picked for who as opposed to what team did better. Albert was in fact the biggest steal of the first round, numerically, taken 14 spots lower than where he actually went. Donnie Avery was the 4th biggest steal in the third round, behind Duane Brown, Jordy Nelson, and Jerome Simpson. Again this isn't to say it was the best or worst pick or who will be the best player, it is who was drafted the furthest from their actual position. For example, I personally think Avery sucks so where you took him was an appropriate spot, maybe even a reach in my mind. Obviously the Rams loved him enough to take him very early. On the other hand, I think Duane Brown was taken two rounds too early in the real draft which makes his rank just as dubious to me. So to clarify, I didn't even look at the players just where they were taken.
Haha, I had the best pick, and the 2nd worst pick based on that chart, both for the Vikings. I'm really not sure what to make of that.
I picked two guys for my teams that eventually got drafted by the Jets. Erik Ainge for Carolina and Lowery for Houston. Good work Rambo, it was an interesting read.
Or both? Or bored at work. Just thought it would be interesting. Again, this in no way reflects who has the best players. In fact most of the large bumps came at the end of the draft in the 7th round, not by getting a Duane Brown in the third round for instance.
