JAKE DOESN?T WANT TO BE A DOLPHIN?
Posted by Mike Florio on April 15, 2008, 12:50 p.m.
As the agent for Michigan tackle Jake Long continues to negotiate with the Miami Dolphins regarding the possibility of working out a contract before the time comes for the Dolphins to make their pick, there?s a report that Jake isn?t all that juiced about playing for the Fins.

John Czarnecki of FOXSports.com reports that ?[t]he word on the street? is that Long doesn?t want to play in Miami. But talks are continuing between the team and Long?s agent because of the ?special honor? of being the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. (Yeah, those Steve Emtman rookie cards are going for about 100 . . . yen.)

Czarnecki says that, if/when the talks with Jake Long break down, the Fins won?t move on to defensive end Chris Long. The Virginia product, the son of Hall of Famer Howie Long, has been presumed for several months to have the inside track because he?s the safest pick on the board.

The Fins apparently then would look after Jake Long to defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston. With talk of Gholston slipping in the eyes of other teams, he?d be very wise to take the best deal he can get, if/when he gets an opportunity to negotiate with the Fins.

If the Dolphins sign Gholston...that move will send EVERYTHING to a frenzy. Think about it. Rams will now have to choose between both Longs. If they take Chris Long, then Atlanta may look to rethinking between Jake Long and Sedrick Ellis. If the Rams go with Jake Long, then the Falcons are staring at Chris Long, Dorsey or Matt Ryan. Let's say the Falcons take Chris Long, and the Raiders take McFadden. Chiefs will look hard at Dorsey and Ellis and the Jets will be looking at Matt Ryan (not saying they'll take him) but I can assure you, we'd be assed out.

well unless he falls to the Pats (which he won't) he is going to be on a bad team. This is just making him look like a crybaby kind if he goes there they will obviously improve more than they already have... they aren't going 1-15 again they won't be a winning team but what other team is that he will be drafted by. Possibly the Rams I guess, or our Jets of course :)

If the Fish go crazy & take Gholston, I think the Rams will take Jake Long. I think OT is their biggest need. The Falcons don't need a DE nearly as much as they need a DT, so I think Dorsey is a lock to them. Then it gets really interesting. I think Chris Long would be too good for the Raiders to pass up, but they could roll the dice & go for McFadden there. Regardless, if Chris Long falls to #4, we have to seriously consider trading up; I'm sure the Pats will be.

Everybody is assuming he doesn't want to play for Miami because the team is bad right now. It could be any of a number of reasons.

Jake Long will play where the money is and the best money is at #1. It's silly to think otherwise.

My guess is that Miami is smoke screening everyone with their interest in Jake Long. I bet they go Chris Long or Ghoulston when it's all said and done.

The fins are playing the feild in negotiations to try and bring the price down. Funny after they had been reported to be talking with Gholston that Jake Long suddenly "does not want to play there". Sounds like a counter move in the press by a player agent to me. There is little to no chance he passes on being the number 1 pick unless there is a very good back round story to his supposed hate for Miami.

Miami is probably being cheap & Long is calling their bluff (that they'll pass on him for somebody cheaper). It could be a Reggie Bush/Mario Williams type of scenario, where Miami passes on the guy they really want because of the price tag.

If you have the option of going #1 then you take it regardless of who the team is. If Jake doesn't want to go there because of the team, and not just because he is calling their bluff then I will lose respect. People these days don't understand how lucky they are to have an opportunity to play in the NFL.

That seems to be true. I read this morning that Parcells which ever one of them he can get the cheapest. He doesn't give a rat's ass who it is and if he could he would burn the pick anyway.

The funny thing is whoever goes number 2 will get less then number 1 anyway so every other owner and gm is absolutely loving Parcells right now.

So possibilities if J. Long doesn't go first:

    1. Gholston
    2. J. Long (it sounds like he's #1 on their board, Dorsey is #2)
    3. G. Dorsey (they also have Long then Dorsey (and Ryan 3rd)
    4. McFadden or C. Long
    5. Ryan/Alberts/Otah/Clady?

That leaves C. Long or McFadden, whichever one the Raiders don't take. Draft C. Long or trade down if he's gone, I say.

well I think Parcells is trying to take the cheapest guy, which would mean our guy at #6 is much cheaper than expected. I would love Chris Long to fall to us, so if he is there because Jake Long or Gholston goes #1 thats more the better for the Jets.

Bingo. It's Long and his agent fighting back against the Phins to drive the price back up.
